I would personally go with learning Japanese. Its much easier. Well, if you have a decent memory.

On the other hand, if your able to grasp fluencey of a languge quickly. Pronouncing difficult words right EASILY. Then Chinese should be simple for you.

To communicate well in chinese you only require about..say 1000characters and tones?

I took a semester of Japanese in college. For the most part, it wasn't difficult. The grammar pissed me off. I still think it's too complex. More than it needs to be. I mean it is similar to Spanish grammar in some ways, but I don't know... I just don't have the patience for it. I don't agree with it.

I think that the basics of Chinese isn't that hard to learn. A person can learn enough to converse on a low level easily. (Basically baby talk) However, it is difficult if you want to reach a moderate or advanced level.

Shokai
I wanted to ask, is learning Chinese (Mandarin) hard? Especially if one is teaching themselves. At my school there is a Chinese class but I cant sign up for it anymore because it is too late and I take Japanese and next year I may take Arabic. I know alot of basic Chinese characters (Thanks to kanji) I have no tough time SOMETIMES reading basic sentences like "I am not this" or "I am not that". So I was thinking maybe I can teach myself Chinese, and also in the neighboring state (NY) there is a Chinatown so I can probably try and practice my Chinese..but although I will feel really awkward because the last time I went there, I felt like a foreing tourist stressed

So what do you think?

Learning chinese is the easiest when a friend teaches you it. Is there a chinese girl you like at your school. Why don't you ask her?

The advantage is that you can learn it while you are on a date with her. It is very interesting this way. Later you will be able to talk to her in chinese and others will not understand a word
