The Hillel at my college does a 24 hour reading of the names of the people who died (those they know, at least), and, each year they pick up from where they left off the year before. I read the names for a bit... people volunteered to take turns.

Hillel here at UAlbany does the same thing. They light candles all around our fountain too. It's nice, but most of the students just stare at it all confused-like...
