Confused? Don't worry, I'll explain it. The question that I need to know is if it's okay to write a book based on the idea of a pre-existing book and get it published. No, I'm not talking about a fanfic, I'm talking a novel.
You see, I want to sorta redo the "Wizard of Oz" story to something more modern yet also incoporate my own, different, thematic idea into it. I would give recognition that the original concept of "Wizard of Oz" wasn't mine, but for some reason, I still feel weird about it. Although it's been redone with no problem, I STILL feel weird about it. It would be my own idea, my own theme, but just a redone version.
Is this okay? I'd like to hear your opinions on this. If this is in the wrong thread....please move it for me 3nodding . I'll be posting some of the chapters later...maybe. I'm a bit paranoid about plagerism ninja .

I think (my own personal oppinion) that that type of thing would be fine. I mean look at the book/play Wicked. That was based on the Wozard of Oz. I think that if you have it different enough, and that you say where you got the idea from it should be fine. *shrugs*
But then again, that's me, and I don't know much about the legal stuff (more than some people I know, but... yeah. Just call me Average)

Meh, I need to catch up on my stuffs. But thanks, I thought it would be fine, I just didn't know. So thanks for clearing it up for me xd

But I've only ever heard the music for the play, so I can't tell you any great detail. So yeah, there are lots of spoofs on lots of different books movies and so on. Like I just got home from watching a movie which I swear is a cross between Mary Poppins and Cinderella. (Nanny McPhee)

Of course it's okay! Fairy tales alone have been redone thousands of time. I think it's only not okay if the author expressly forbids it. Honestly, it's like the old saying goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
