Please read through ALL rules! All guild rules are enforced! You must also abide byGaia's ToS. Any violators will be dealt with promptly!

Who Should Join this Guild
Anyone who loves to read, write or loves fiction, sci-fi or fantasy (or a combination of all of these) is welcome to join. I encourage you to, actually.

Spoilers
Any spoiler topics need to be marked with a spoiler alert before posting any spoilers. Posts with spoliers need to have the spoiler's words colored in white. Tell members to highlight the words to see the spoiler.

No Flaming
Flaming is not tolerated. While the FSFBG Staff may sometimes get a little rough when dealing with troublemakers or a**-hats, flaming is not tolerated among the members of the FSFBG. Keep a level head, and help us avoid a brawl reminiscent of grade-school playground fight. PM any FSFBG Staff Member when you feel there may be a problem!!

Cursing/Cussing/Swearing
I allow it. I cuss myself. You may certainly use such words as: damn, hell, s**t, ********, a**, b***h, asstard, asshat, ********, a*****e, bitchtastic, damn-diddly-hell... you get the idea. I will NOT tolerate ANY abusive words however. No derogatory slang or defamatory speech will be tolerated. And the number one thing I absolutely will not tolerate is any form of "hate speech," racial slurs, or any other type of discriminatory speaking. Of course, this all also falls under the "No Flaming" rule cited above.

Negative Talk Directed Towards Staff Member(s)
No talk that is abusive towards FSFBG Staff Members. You will immediately be banned from this guild and have your offensive post/thread deleted/recycled. So don't say s**t like, "Stick your rules up your fat a** and die." If you say things like this, then I hate you.

Making New Threads
  • All new threads about a specific book have to be titled: "The Book's Name" - "The Book's Author". Discussion about this book only in this thread, along with why you like it/don't like it. Any discussion about why it's your favorite goes in the Suggested Reading thread.

  • Any threads about "'such and such' book is my favorite" will be summarily deleted and the creator PMed about where he/she can post and discuss their favorite book (in the Suggested Reading thread).

Post in the Appropriate Place*
Each subforum has a description alerting you to what does and does not belong there. While the FSFBG Staff does have the ability to move topics between the subforums, habitual posting in the wrong subforums by any member will only annoy the staff in result in warnings being given (as this is also a form of spam). With the addition of the new subforums it can get a little tricky, but they're pretty self explanatory. Please use the subforums to keep the clutter down. If you'd like a thread moved, please PM any FSFBG Staff Member to let us know.

Spamming*
Please do not spam in any other part of the guild besides theCan-O-Spam Subforum. This is NOT allowed and will only serve to draw ire from our regulars and Staff. What specifically is "spam" then? It's ANY content that doesn?t relate to the topic at hand. Nonsense posts. Posts with just a bunch of unrelated images, links, or text. Clutter/repeat threads and one word posts are also considered spam.

Spamvertising*
No advertising links to your non-guild-related threads (i.e.: your stores, hang outs, other guilds, mini-shop, etc) outside of theLottos, Quests & Shops subforum. I will, however, accept limited advertising in theCan-O-Spam Subforum, but please don't abuse this privilege!

Bumping*
Please do not bump when unnecessary. This is a slower-paced guild. It's NOT the Chatterbox, so there is absolutely NO need to bump your topic unless it has fallen from the first page and is still unanswered/being discussed. Excessive bumping will be treated like spam.Spam in the Can-O-Spam Subforum

Learn to Search
Please learn to search! Learning to search will enable us to prevent having multiple threads on one topic, thus helping the board run more smoothly. Continual failure to search by any member will result in warnings. In addition, we do not wish to see disclaimers such as, "I did a search but couldn't find anything like this, so I posted it." Such disclaimers will not help you, nor will they prevent a redundant thread from being closed. In fact, the only purpose such a disclaimer will serve is to annoy the FSFBG Staff.

Attempt to Use Proper English
We aren't English and Grammar teachers (at least most of us?), and we understand that some people aren't native speakers of English while others simply aren't good at punctuation. We don't expect perfection, but we do expect an honest effort. If you are not a good speller, type your posts into a word-processing program and spell-check them or download the google toolbar and use it's text spell checker before posting them. (If you are having problems, one of the Staff Members can edit your post to make it more understandable.) In addition, no netspeak or leetspeak will be tolerated, nor will various "cute" styles of posting such as aLtErNaTiNg CaPs, bolding or italicizing entire posts (to the point where it hurts to read it), or never-ending strings of emoticons. Compliance with this rule will help you avoid the wrath of the FSFBG Staff and the disdain of our regularly active members. It will also make life a lot easier for our large non-native-English-speaker population. Not to mention it will help all of us understand what the hell you're trying to say! We can't help you if we can't understand you!

Post With Intelligence
Idiocy and stupidity are frowned upon here. If you show us that you have more than a solitary brain cell dying of isolation, we'll probably like you. If you act like a brain dead moron, we won't. Be prepared for the consequences of that. We don't expect everyone to be rocket-scientists, but we do expect a bit of intelligence. In other words, "Don't be stupid. Okay?"

Mind Your Dates: Old Topics
We frown upon what we call "dead horse topics", "zombie", or "necro threads" around here. In short, some topics just have a way of rearing their ugly heads over and over. While we're always happy to see that people go back and read older topics, a word of caution is in order. If a topic hasn't been posted to in a month or more, chances are the discussion has run its course. So, if you're considering posting to one of these topics, make very, very sure that you are adding something new and significant to the thread. The exceptions to the "one month" rule of thumb are few. We do have a few threads that run slowly but have been open for ages. The only way to tell the difference between one of these threads (which are sometimes pinned) and an old topic to be avoided is to familiarize yourself with the way we do things around here, and even long-running threads are not exempt from the "new & significant" requirement for your posts. Old topics can always be looked at in the Recycle Bin.

Check Your Attitude at the Door
From time to time, we have people who come here and instantly begin complaining that we insist on enforcing the rules. We also often hear members try to evade the rules by claiming a problem with authority, a right to free speech, etc. In an ideal world, a guild like this wouldn't attract people who really just want to make trouble. In an ideal world, every new member would read The Rules and follow them without our FSFBG Staff Members having to remind them. This isn't an ideal world. This means the owner, and the people she has entrusted with it, and the other FSFBG Staff Members, have every right to set rules and prevent you from participating here if we see fit. You do not have the right to spread hate, you do not have the right to insult the FSFBG Staff or other members, and you do not have the right to throw hissy-fits and backtalk the FSFBG Staff if they reprimand you. These behaviors won't impress us and, in most cases, will do nothing but earn you an instant warning. If you don't like these conditions, the solution is simple: direct your browser elsewhere. And people, remember, this is simply an internet forum. It's not the end of the world if you don't agree with something we say. If things get that serious, perhaps it's time you took a break from the internet.

No Backseat Moderating
Backseat moderating is any action by a member that serves only to point out another member?s failure to follow The Rules. This means the general populace of the FSFBG should not be seen telling other members not to use netspeak, telling them to get back on topic, telling them they resurrected an old topic, etc. We most definitely do not want to see strings of posts from members telling the offending member to go read The Rules. One well-meaning, helpful suggestion phrased in a kind and respectful manner is usually tolerable. A string of them is not. If you see something like this occuring, please PM any of the FSFBG Staff Members and let us handle it.

No Attention Whoring or Self-Serving Clap-Trap
This is only allowed in the Rants Go Here sticky. If you're whining about how mean your parents, kids in your school, or members of your community are, if you're whining that people treat you differently when you dress as shockingly as possible, if you're posting pictures of yourself every other day on our Members Photos thread, or if you're playing the "depressed and gother-than-thou" card, you're attention whoring and being a self-referential, masturbatory, narcissistic half-wit. We don't like it, and we won't tolerate it. Use some common sense, and whine elsewhere. Rule of thumb: If the thread is all about you, we probably don't care, and you're probably breaking this rule. However, if it's about you seeking genuine support and advice, then post away.

Committing FSFBG Fraud
This will get you banned from the guild. This rule goes somewhat hand-in-hand with the previous rule, but I felt it needed some more detailing. It is against the rules of this guild to willfully and unnecessarily deceive other members, or FSFBG Staff Members in anyway. What this means is, the FSFBG absolutely respects your right to privacy, and by no means intends to force anyone to reveal anything about themselves or any given situation that they would feel uncomfortable in doing so. However, when any member goes out of their way to willfully make up "stories" for the purposes of blatant deception for their own personal gain (even if only for attention), that is wrong. It is in my opinion, that anyone caught doing so, is taking advantage of the FSFBG's trusting and supportive atmosphere by being intentionally deceptive, and that is a direct violation of trust. So please refrain from posting up any far-fetched, made up things that are to be taken as truth in order to get attention or donations or anything else. In short, should you decide to reveal anything about yourself to the guild, please be honest in doing so, and never post anything you don't feel comfortable posting. This rule will be enforced! Actions will be taken against anyone who is proven to be willfully deceiving the guild for personal gain (even if it's only for attention) and you will be banned.

Stay On Topic*
Hi-jacking threads and dragging them off-topic for your own purposes is a form of attention-whoring/spam and will not be tolerated. It is natural for discussions to evolve. It is not natural for them to take 90-degree turns on a dime into a completely unrelated direction just because you feel like it.

Links, Images, Posting, Signature, and Avatar Rules
Be smart and follow the Gaia TOS on this one. While you may think a picture of your boob crack is sexy or innocent, it may offend others. Use common sense in posting. We don't know what kind of perverts are out there, and we won't be held responsible for your lack of thinking when posting pictures. Do not direct/hot-link images.
Be good boys and girls and host the images yourself so you can link to them from your own space. There are a myriad of free hosting sites available, and your friend Google will help you find them. Also, when posting a link, be aware that many people access this site from work/school.
Pornographic and/or overly offensive images are simply not allowed (not allowed by the FSFBG orGaia TOS). Also, please resize images that you wish to post. Screen stretching is a pain and constant headache in other areas of this site. Let's try to minimize it here. Ok? If you cannot minimize the image for whatever reason, then just post a text link to the image instead.
Also, per Gaia's Admins, avatars that are glitched and appear "naked" are not allowed. If I see them, I must report them for re-saving. So please don't let your avatars be nakkie!

New Members and Posting Introduce yourself! There's a sticky for it under the main guild forum. It's not that hard. Something simple telling us who you are and how you found us. Though not required, it is nice to have some information to go with the name. If you're new and you see a thread you might be able to help with, read it first. Your advice and/or information may have already been covered.

Posting Articles for Discussion
If you are posting an article for discussion, please post a link to that article rather than the text of the article. If the article requires registration to view, posting the text is permitted only if a link to the article is also posted. This ensures we are not in violation of any copyright laws.

Touchy Subjects
So if you want to post a topic concerning things of this nature, you must PM a FSFBG Staff Member for approval first! If you are approved, then post it. If you are NOT approved, then do not post it. If you post it anyway, your thread will be deleted and you'll receive a warning. I made this rule to protect other member?s feelings dealing with sensitive issues.

This is NOT a Dating Service
Attempting to pick up "hot mamas" will not be tolerated. If you want to do that, visit a personals site. In addition, harassment of members via PMing will dealt with in a most unpleasant manner. We haven't had to deal with this as of yet, but with as large as this site is, it's a distinct possibility. Please PM a FSFBG Staff Member immediately, and we will do our best to deal with the problem. If we are unable to handle the problem, we will be happy to help you contact a Gaia Moderator.

Read the Info Stickies and Posts
The Info Stickies and posts will answer a myriad of questions that may not be covered in the Rules. Read them before you start asking questions. When in doubt, ask. Always feel free to PM any FSFBG Staff Member when you have a question, comment, or problem with the FSFBG. We also ask that you also familiarize yourself with theGaia TOS. Ignorance of Gaia's ToS and the FSFBG's rules will NOT be tolerated and will NOT excuse you from receiving Warnings and Consequences.

Bringing Down the Almighty BanHammer
All bannings done in the FSFBG are a group decision made by the whole (or a majority of) the FSFBG Staff. No one staff member can make this decision alone. And believe me, we will go through a considerable amount of discussion and research before we ban someone. It is not a lightly made quick decision. If you feel you've been wrongly banned from this guild, please feel free to appeal it. PM me or any of the FSFBG Staff and make your case. However, I must warn, that any PM sent to us where you're ranting, swearing, pissed off, whiney, or having a sassy hissy fit will just be deleted and we will NOT review your case. Any further angry, whiney PM sent will be considered harassment and you will be reported as such to a Gaia Moderator.

Stealing Copyrighted Material (Plagiarism)
This is the last but most important rule (obtained from clarion in the rules in The Writer's Forum):

  • What is plagiarism?

http://www.dictionary.com
taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own

  • So if you post something written by someone else (ANYONE--even your buddy at school or some random person on the internet) and claim it as your own, you are committing plagiarism. Basically it's a fancy word for theft, and we don't take kindly to thieves in these parts, partner.

We see two basic kinds of plagiarism in the WF; indirect or inadvertent, and flagrant plagiarism.
o Indirect/inadvertent plagiarism is sometimes an accident. Maybe you see a cool poem online and want to share it with everyone here, so you post it. But! Rather than crediting the original author maybe you forgot, or didn't think about it. When people see a poem posted with no credit, the automatic reaction is to think the person who posted it, also wrote it. They start showering you with praise, because it's a damn good poem.

This is where the plagiarism comes in. Instead of saying, "Oh, sorry! I forgot to mention I didn't write this, it's by So And So," you just keep quiet. It's nice to get all that praise and attention, and they'll never know it's not your poem, right? WRONG.

Sometimes people honestly don't understand that they have to give credit when posting works by other people. We do have a wide age-range on Gaia as well as lots of people who don't speak English as their first language. This is why inadvertent plagiarism isn't treated quite as harshly as a more flagrant case of plagiarism. It's still wrong though, and can get a new poster off to a really bad start.

o Flagrant plagiarism is deliberate theft. This is when, for instance, someone goes out and finds a song lyric and posts it as their original poetry, or takes a story written by someone else and posts it as their own work. They are actively claiming the material for their own, and may even fight with anyone who points out the theft.

It is often very obvious when a piece is stolen, because there's a certain level of skill one can expect on an internet message board and most published poems/songs/stories are a bit above this level. Our regulars are well-read and familiar with lots of published material as well, so it might be recognized right away. It is also very easy to plug a line into Google and search. If you found it, so can we.

  • Plagiarism is against the TOS.
    The TOS
While using the GAIA Online Experience, the User may not:
Upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available any Content that you do not have the rights to.

  • That means if you plagiarize, you may get a warning or even be banned. So don't do it!
o But what if I give credit?
When you post something written by someone else, you're posting work you don't hold the copyright to. Since in this guild we occasionally discuss published works, you are allowed to post things you didn't write provided you cite the source (think of it like quoting a work in a paper--you always note who wrote it and where it came from). This also doesn't give you free rein to post an entire novel written by someone else--rather, quote a small section (maybe what you want to focus on), then if possible link to the full text rather than posting the whole piece.

  • What can I do to help?
Plagiarism doesn't happen that often, but it does happen. This doesn't mean be paranoid about anyone posting really good work, but it never hurts to double-check. Always back up any accusation with proof before calling someone a thief. Verify the original author and link to where you found the information if it's online. If it truly is a case of plagiarism, report it in this sticky or PM a FSFBG Staff Member rather than starting a fight with the person.

*In this post, I will discuss punishments and consequences in the FSFBG.

    Punishments
A punishment is given when a FSFBG member breaks our rules. This warning can range from a "reminder" PM to "guild probation" and all the way to "guild banning" depending on the severity of your actions.

The FSFBG Crew wants this place to be enjoyable for everyone, so we will enforce all rules (and Gaia's ToS) to ensure that everyone's rights and feelings are protected here. We do not play favorites and we do not target people. So, if you mind the rules (and Gaia's ToS) you'll have nothing to worry about!

    Consequences
There are several types of consequences a member can receive for breaking the rules (or Gaia's ToS).

Reminder - Done in the form of a PM. Usually done for not-too-serious, very first, accidental offenses. Somewhat like an "informal" warning. Just reminding you of the rules. One of the FSFBG Crew will PM you with "FSFBG Reminder" in the title of the PM. It will be explained to you (with quotes when possible) what you've done to incur the reminder. It will then be explained to you that you need to modify this offensive behavior in the future or there will be further consequences.

Warning - Done in the form of a PM. Usually done for not-too-serious offenses or first offenses. One of the FSFBG Crew will PM you with "FSFBG Warning" in the title of the PM. It will be explained to you (with quotes when possible) what you've done to incur the warning. It will then be explained to you that you need to modify this offensive behavior in the future or there will be further consequences.

Guild Probation - Done in the form of a PM. Usually for more serious offenses or repeated offenses. One of the FSFBG Crew will PM you with "FSFBG Probation" in the title of the PM. It will be explained to you (with quotes when possible) what you've done to incur the probation. It will then be explained to you that you are no longer allowed to start ANY new threads within the guild for a period of 2 weeks without PMing either the Captain, the Vice Captain, or a FSFBG Crew member first for permission. And all posts/replies you make in any other guild threads will be monitored heavily. After the 2 week probation is over with, you may make new threads again, and you won't be monitored as heavily.

Guild Banning - Done in the form of PM and banning. Usually for VERY serious offenses, breaking of guild probation, or overly repeated offenses. It will be explained to you (with quotes when possible) what you've done to incur the banning. It will then be explained to you that you are henceforth banned from the guild. This is not a lightly made decision. The Captain, Vice Captain(s), and all Crew Members will be involved in making a decision on banning a member from this guild.

There are a few offenses that will pretty much get you auto-banned from this guild without receiving prior reminder, warnings, or probation. They are:
    • Negative Talk towards FSFBG Staff Members - Please see above post for applicable rule
    • FSFBG Fraud - Please see above post for applicable rule
    • Flagrantly breaking Gaia's ToS.

*Other things may be added to this list at anytime, so please check back often!

This post is about how to properly go about reporting and/or dealing with any conflicts that may ever arise between FSFBG members.

When you have a large active group of people all together (like we do here in the FSFBG) it is inevitable that conflict will arise at any given time. That's normal. Especially when it concerns parenting techniques and other such personal stuff that we FSFBGers discuss on a daily basis.

So I just want to make it CLEAR as to what should be done in these cases.

    ----------------

If someone in this guild makes a post/thread that offends you, then you should alert a FSFBG Staff Member about it immediately. Do not post a retort post/thread. Do not harass or flame the "offender." Just PM aFSFBG Staff Member with a link to the offending post/thread, any applicable quotes, and any applicable screen shots, and why it offends you.

We will then take action. There are many things we can do to solve these conflicts, so please always contact one of us first! We can delete posts/threads, lock threads, ban people, and etc.

    ----------------

If you have a problem with a certain FSFBG Staff Member, then contact a different FSFBG Staff Member you're more comfortable with. We are all fair, objectionable, mature adults. We want to know how to better improve this guild, even if that means improving ourselves.

So please never hesitate to contact us if you have a problem with any FSFBG Staff Member. No one will yell at you or flame you or pick on you for doing so. Ever.

    ----------------

Here is a list of all the current FSFBG Staff Members

    • crystalsmuse - Captain
    • dawnsmuse - Vice Captain
    • SaberFireTiger - Crew
    • Leavaros - Crew
    • Desert_Demon - Crew
    • Kiyome the Dragon - Crew

You can PM any person on the above list if you ever need assistance with the guild. That's what we're here for. We want to help. So please don't ever hesitate to contact us whenever needed.

Bear in mind, however, that we all do have our own lives to run as well, so we may not always be able to respond to you PM immediately. So give us about a day or so before you PM another FSFBG Staff Member.

    ----------------

I want to keep this guild as welcoming and pleasant as possible, but I can only do that with your help. The FSFBG Staff cannot monitor everything that goes on in here all the time. So it is up to you to report things to us and ask us for assistance.

    ----------------

If, for whatever reason, you feel that you ever want to leave this guild, you are certainly free to do so. No one will harass you or beg you to stay. But if you do leave, please be mature about it. Being overly dramatic about leaving isn't going to help anyone and there's no sense in dragging the whole guild in to your personal decision to leave. Feel free to use your "Quit" option at any time.

I hope that helps to clear some things up. I may edit or amend this post later if I feel I need to.

This thread is more like a table of contents. I will be listing and explaining each of our subforums for your convenience. Since, at this time, there is no option for me to add a description to the subforums' titles; I will be using this thread for that purpose.

Please read this thread if you'd like to find out more info on our subforums and any possible future subforums. I will update this as needed.

    • The Fiction, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Book Guild Main Forum
This is the main forum of the FSFBG. It is the default forum you come to when you enter this guild. This forum is Public. That means all members can post and read in it. This forum is used to discuss a broad range of topics (mostly about books and authors), but is mostly a "general discussion" forum. A quick rule of thumb - if your topic doesn't seem to fit into one of the FSFBG's subforums, then it should probably be put into our Main Forum. For more details and info on what kind of announcements are allowed in the Main Forum, please check out this thread. Please read all the Main Forum's sticky posts and announcement posts BEFORE you post anywhere in this guild! I cannot stress this enough!

    • Crew Only
This subforum is Crew Only. That means only the FSFBG Staff can read and post in it. This is a subforum where the FSFBG Staff can discuss guild business privately. We use this subforum to plan events, discuss new rules or policies, and to discuss other important things.

    • Roleplaying
This subforum is Public. That means all members can post and read in it. This is a subforum for roleplaying books, fan-fic or any other type of roleplaying. There is more precise list of example topics in the Roleplaying subforum's "FYI" sticky.

    • Lottos, Quests & Shops
This subforum is Public. That means all members can post and read in it. This is a subforum for discussing all things related to a lotto you are running (even if you are not running it in the FSFBG), a quest you have(even if you are not running it in the FSFBG), or a shop you run (even if you are not running it in the FSFBG). There is more precise list of example topics in the Lottos, Quests & Shops subforum's "FYI" sticky. You can now have games and casinos in this subforum!

    • Recycle Bin
This subforum is Public. That means all members can read in it. The purpose of this subforum is to be an archive for informative threads. These threads are usually "dead" threads that contain useful insight, comments, links, experiences, opinions, and information. These threads are here for you to read over if you'd like to see what has been said about 'x' subject. NEW TOPICS/THREADS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE RECYCLE BIN SUBFORUM. Any new threads made will be nuked on sight. We move threads to this subforum rather than delete threads when possible. If your thread is moved to the Recycle Bin, you can ask to have it restored. But that does not mean we will automatically restore every thread just because you ask. If a thread is moved to the Recycle Bin, then chances are there was a GOOD reason to move it there.

    • Writer's Corner: Books, Poetry and Fan-fic

    • Comments, Complaints & Suggestions
This subforum is Public. That means all members can post and read in it. Anything that has to do with this guild you can discuss in here. Please help keep this guild on it's feet by making lots of suggestions! If you have to comment or complain, please for the love of Gambino keep it short, to the point and PG-13. Chatter will be deleted...
