I knew this would happen and I did it anyway. I read the article... and I am now dumber for doing so. The aguements posed by the person who wrote that article are horrible. I'm not even going to counter argue the the article.

i go this article as a research paper...i have written a whole paper about D&D and as soon as i type it all i'll post for you guys to read...BTW i am using you're comments on this article in my paper.
Feel free, if there's anything I can do(I doubt it, you seem quite capable) just ask.

i am a very devout catholic, but what many people dont realize in DnD is that you can play as good too, and as the thing states, most people dont like playing good

Quote:
An "advanced" D&D master's guide advises: "The best way to avoid taking damage is to beat the foe so badly he wants to crawl under a rock or, better yet, run away."
hmmm is he referencing an outdated book, or is this article just really old?

I have never run an "evil" campaign. My player characters are always the good guys. I have allowed an evil character or two to hide out in the party, infiltrating or sabotaging the other players twisted but I'd say that's the exeption, not the rule.

i've read that article before, that man is off his nugget!!

I don't think we should criticize him. He either cares or is simply deluded, and is doing it for vain glory. But what I am concerned with is that people are making fun of him. I think that people who simply treat ignorance with ignorance are merely adding chaos to the cycle. So, what all Christians and, in fact, anyone faced with people like this should do is simply smile and forgive them. I know this sounds corny, but it makes things better. As a Russian Orthodox Christian and a roleplayer, I know that this is a test. So, when faced with this test, will you become weak and be one of the rude people who swears at this man and makes sport of him, or will you forgive him? I don't mean to be preachy, btw.

What we have here is not a question of morality or piety, but a question of where to draw the line. There are any number of bad cases of roleplaying. For instance, the well-overdone "sewer deaths". I'm sure you've heard the story: Two roleplayers end up dead in the sewers. However, many people's lives are improved by Roleplaying. I for one have learned to be quick on my feet, and have taken up other hobbies and talents as a result of this activity. I know of another roleplaying group tht has a crippled person in it. When I was talking to a member of this other roleplaying group, he told me how his friend, confined to a wheelchair, liked roleplaying because it helped him imagine what it would be like to walk, to be a "full person". I think that defending roleplaying is just a matter of looking around at your local gaming store. And of course, characters are just a temporary persona. You put them on when the game starts, and take them off once you are done. Of course there are a few isolated incidents, but these are most definitely not a general statement.

That said, I would once more encourage all who read this article to forgive the writer of the article, as human beings and as Christians. It's too easy to be ignorant and simply say that the man is a nutter. He is obviously troubled, and needs as much support in faith as we can give him. So forgive him, for not everyone is granted the same knowledge.

Heh, 'Straight Talk on D&D' I recall that a friend and I had a hearty laugh or two about this...

I think it's more of a case of people seeing devils in doilies. The type of person who would decry D&D most of the time is also against fantasy literature in general and rock'n'roll. Of course, the infamous sweer incidents or such don't make things easier.

By the way, juujuu-otaku, have you ever seen any of the old Chick Tracts on D&D? They seem like something that are relevent to your paper. That and "Blackleaf, nooooo!" is the best title of a paper ever! xd

Now you're assuming that we're all Christians, so you must not have looked at the poll results. As the 3rd largest religion (by a long ways) that's a pretty conceited viewpoint.
I think if someone is stupid, and voices stupid opinions, people should feel free to voice their own opinion to him. If he didn't want people to disagree with him publicly, and possibly ridicule him, he could have kept his opinions to himself. By voicing an opinion publicly you subject yourself to the public's views on your opinion. While pointless insults and flames put you a rung below him, voicing intelligent criticism, backed up by reasoning and logic, should be encouraged in all areas of life. It is vital.

outdated book, and he's insulted me multiple times as he has with any person who isn't christian, damn bible-beaters.

i was gonna write him about how insulting his article is to non-christians and how if he wants to be deemed on acuracy he should make sure his sources should be up to date, and that clerics, are much like the christian, saints, who are able to use miracles, as clerical magic is granted by the god they worship in dnd. let me guess fable's evil too since you can play evil characters in it too! *does scary hand motions*
-but no freakin email adress.
i guess the internets evil too.
