((ah, like Neith said, feel free to edit anything if I screw it up XD))

Angua had returned to Tir Nan Og almost reluctantly; despite the bond she had felt with the fey child she was kithain to, he was becoming ruthless. She only had a glimpse of the court's intrigues, but even that was becoming too much. And worse, she found herself doing what was asked of her, whatever her own feelings on the matter were. Yet when she left, she felt as if she were abandoning Lupinus, though he obviously didn't need her. She paused to look through the bag she carried over her shoulder; everything Lupinus had asked for from Gaia was there, even the more random items on the list. With a sigh, she began to walk; having let her mind wander, she finally realized she wasn't heading in anything close to the proper direction. If she looked straight ahead, she could see a castle through the trees, but it was the shining castle of the Sun Court.

She should go back, she knew. If she were seen... she didn't think that would go over well, and yet she continued to move forward. She felt an insistent tugging at her mind, as if something was drawing her towards it and clouding her mind. Angua followed the pull, hoping it would abate somewhat and allow her thoughts to clear. Her heart beat faster as she approached the castle, but she saw no one and warily entered the courtyard. Thankfully, whatever was pulling at her wasn't trying to make her go inside the castle. She could say she was lost, she supposed, as long as she didn't intrude so far as to go inside...

Walking quickly across the courtyard in a daze, she moved toward a smaller building at the read or the courtyard. She pushed open the door and, once inside, let the bag she carried fall to the ground. It looked like a place where one would work metal, and a workshop. There were bits of iron strewn about, half finished keys, and other oddities. It was dark, but sunlight streamed in through a dust-covered window.

All else forgotten, she reached out a hand to touch the window, leaving dusty fingerprints as she placed her palm against it. Cutting through the haze surrounding her thoughts came a voice, somehow familiar, but at the same time very different.

"Welcome, Angua von Uberwald, to your ancestral home. Do you, of your own free will, give of your soul and your lifespark, to restore Lutra, daughter of --- and ---, to the Realm of Tir Nan Og and the glory of the Sun Court?"

"I..." With only a moment's hesitation, she nodded slightly. "I do."

The light streaming through the glass grew brighter, almost blinding her, and she had to look away. The light colored the floor by her feet, and as it faded, a small form took shape. Angua rubbed her eyes until she could see the child sitting beneath the window.

The small girl was clad in green, staring at Angua with wide eyes. The child reached up a hand to touch her own face, blinking with surprise at being able to move again. "Where am I? No... I know this place. But who are you? Where are my par--" She stopped herself, not wanting to hear the answer.

Angua moved toward the child slowly. "Angua. And they're... well, they're not here." She needed to get the child out of this dim and neglected building and into the sunlight. Then she'd have to figure out how to explain how she got here...

Lutra lay in bed, curled up and with the covers pulled over her head. She found if she didn't look at anything, didn't try to think too much, she could almost pretend that everything was still the same... that she had just woken up in the morning and had begged her mother to let her sleep in just a little longer. If she kept her eyes closed, it was easier to pretend.

But she found she could not shut out the silence that enveloped everything. While the castle seemed the same in appearance, there was a lack of noise that made it impossible to fully believe what her mind wanted her to. There had been no voices outside her door, and no one bustling about. When she had looked out her window, just for a moment, she had seen one or two figures walking about. Not familar figures, though. She almost wished she could have stayed sleeping in the smithy where she could pretend her mother had just stepped out for a moment, and where she could almost accept it as truth.

She grabbed a fold of her blanket and hugged it to her chest, her eyes still tightly shut. As she drifted off into what she thought must be normal sleep this time, she thought of how long it had been since she had been outside in the sun, with trees, with a lake- how long it had been since she'd been able to move at all. She wanted to run, to jump into the lake and to feel the cold water on her skin. It would make her sure that she was alive. You couldn't be dead and still have to hold your breath underwater, could you? Maybe you could. "I've never been dead, though. I don't think I have, anyway," she said to herself just before she finally fell asleep.

Lutra sat down in her chair and opened the new book Ardea had found for her. She propped it up on her lap and started to read, toying with her necklace. Some words were still a little too complicated for her, and she wondered when she'd be ready to clean out the smithy. She turned the page, looking at a new diagram.

She'd always had her mother there to help her before, and she'd never really ben able to try anything on her own. Too little. She was still too little. What good was it? She couldn't reach anything, she wasn't strong enough to lift things. She let out her breath in a sigh and tried to keep reading, but her thoughts kept drifting back to what she could and couldn't do. She was small enough to climb easily, and she could hide well. She could swim, that didn't take size to do. But what good was that against the bad people? What if they came back and she couldn't help at all?

She set aside the book she was reading and picked up the slimmer, more worn volume she'd bought back with her. Lockpicking was useful, right? She'd try to learn that, then. And with this book, she wouldn't even need "proper" tools if she read the chapters on improvising. She read for a little while longer, then became restless. Maybe she could find someone to talk to... maybe there were more kids her own age to play with? Well, maybe there were only big people, but surely one of them would play with her.

Setting the second book aside as well, she slipped out into the hall.

Lutra's Journal
Deer jurnal.

Bad peopel were here today, even thowe Miss Ursa said they can't come here but they did. Then the nice big people came and made them leav. The scary lady with lots of arms went away. I don't kno what they wanted. We woodn't have anything of theirs cause we don't steal and aren't meen like them. I was afrayd and she was bigger then me but queen lily didn't let the bad lady hurt me again.

I didn't kno she was the queen but she is and she is pretty and sad and nice. I want to be pretty like that when I'm bigger, but I don't want to be sad. I want to make something for her so maybe she won't be sad and to say thank you cause mum always said that was nice to do for people when they help you, but I don't know what yet. And for the other nice lady and the older boy too if I can.

The bad lady also has someone called Muris but she will maybe give her back. I think I herd that name before maybe but I'm not sure. I don't want to leave the casle until I'm bigger if there are more bad people around. Maybe then I can lern magic like Miss Ursa to make them go away.

Lutra awoke from her sleep, blinking as her eyes adjusted to the dim light. With fleeting memories of bad dreams, she wondered what had woken her. She frowned; she felt a little funny, and she was sweating. Maybe she was sick.

She felt her forehead with her hand, but then curled up and clutched at her stomach as she felt a sharp pain. It spread to the rest of her body then, and she closed her eyes against the brilliant light that encompassed her. Whimpering at the pain, she felt her legs and arms cramp, and she tugged a blaket over herself as the hurting faded away.

She must have fallen asleep again, for when she woke, it was morning, and the sun was shining through her windows. She remembered the pain and stretched, stiff from the way she had been lying for what must have been hours.

Something was different. She realized this as she moved to sit up. Certain bits of her were much different. And her bed suddenly seemed much smaller than it had the day before. Which meant, logically, that she was bigger. Lutra stood, ridding herself of her clothes as she noticed they had torn at the seams, and wrapping herself in a thin blanket, she walked over to stand before her mirror.

She appeared to have grown quite a bit. How interesting. And she felt different, too. She had to touch her face to make sure it was still her, to make sure it still felt like her. She thought she might be as tall as that horse boy, now, or Ardea. She wondered what the heron fey would make of her transformation.

Thinking of Ardea and of the library, she smiled. She could do much more now, if she could find the right books. And she'd go exploring the castle for tools and other things she'd need. Now that she was bigger...

Her room still felt like a safe place for her, and she was going to make sure it stayed that way. Nothing would get in without her knowing, not if she had anything to do with it. Not once she'd located the books she needed, and cleaned up the smithy for her workshop.

She also planned to create more "safe" spots for herself. Around the castle, and maybe even beyond the castle walls, depending. But first, to find some clothing that would fit...

Lutra's Journal
Dear Journal,

Much has changed for me lately. I'm bigger now, of course, and stronger. I still don't like to wander on my own, though, so I've been learning to move through the castle, and the outdoors, without being noticed. Maybe there isn't anyone to notice me anyway. Everyone seems busy. I know there are more fey here, many I haven't met. I haven't seen Ursa around, though, or Ardea-- and I don't want to bother Queen Lilium just because I'm lonely. She must have enough to deal with.

I don't know how they'll react to me now, though. I hardly recognized myself after I changed. I look so different. Maybe it'll be easier to meet someone new, then I don't have to worry about that kind of thing.

I've made hiding places around the castle, and some outside. Some are just barely big enough for me, some are abandoned rooms. It seems silly now, almost, but it does help me feel safer. And locks. I've been practicing with those, too, for my room. They're like puzzles. I spent hours working on one the other day... I should get back to work on it.

Lutra woke early; a stray ray of sunlight had slipped through the crack between her curtains, shining in her eyes. She stretched lazily and found to her surprise that she could touch both the head and foot of her bed at once. She couldn't have gotten taller in her sleep, could she? She finished her stretch and had an odd sensation that her body was only just settling into a new form, a new strenth.

Sliding out from beneath her blankets, she padded over to the mirror. Her eyes widened slightly and she prodded her face with both hands. A mostly-familiar face stared back at her, but it was different, not quite her yet. Lutra sighed and shook her head, shaking hair from her eyes. The last remains of her childhood, the girlish cut made her face look shadowed, strange. She shrugged; and they got in her eyes. She fingered the short locks for another moment and then retrieved a small knife from her drawer, began sawing at them. Soon the floor around her feet was covered with the remains of most of her hair. She threw on some clothes and went to find out if she was still slim enough to slip through the castle's hideaways as before.
