Inside sits a small black case, made with a leathery feel to the touch. The case has a long shoulder strap and a golden clip to hold the lid down. Opening it reveals a brand new set of binoculars.

Krait sat in awe, staring down at the fresh black leather; he could smell the stiffness of the newly oiled skin. Carefully, cautiously, Krait lifted the case out of the box and on to his lap. He opened the leather case with a pop of the brass snap. He lifted out the binoculars and turned the heavy instrument over and over in his hands. The light from the window glinted off the lenses and the buckle of the strap. He worked the stiff leather of the strap through his fingers, gradually tightening the strap so that were he to stand, the binoculars would be safely off the floor. He slid the strap over his pale hair and felt the comforting weight of the glass and metal and leather on his lap. Then taking the pair in his hands and pressing the two ends together as hard as he could, Krait focused the eye pieces to be close enough together that he might see through them. He liftedthe tool to his eyes and looked across the room to his bed. It leapt huge into his vision, blurry and warped and eerily close. He fiddled with the knobs on the binoculars indiscriminately until the picture refined and focused. With a grin of excitement, Krait got to his sock feet and shuffled to the window. He leaned his elbows on the sill and looked out onto the lawn in front of the Developement House. He focused on a tree and looked in amazment through the lenses as the blur of green leaves refined to a million green gems blinking in the sun. The leaves of the tree wobbled in the breeze and Krait could pick out something he hadn't seen before. A bird nest sat upon the branch he focused the binoculars on. Amazed, Krait studied the nest and then proceded to focus his shiny new gift on everything he could.

Krait spent most of his afternoon wandering around his room and then outside the evelopement House peering at the world through the lenses of the binoculars. Eventually, he put them back into their stiff leather case and put the set carefully on his desk. Krait took his journal and a pen and sat down on the floor. He carefully creased the last page of the book and tore it from the binding. He smoothed the paper out as best he could and carried it to his desk. He got out a blue felt and thought hard. He gripped the pen and worked it slowly and carefully over the paper. He wrote out hs message and scrutinized it for a long and quiet moment before finally folding it in half and making his way out of the Developement House.

Day Two Today I practised reading. I read some pages of a story called "How the Whale got its Throat" by Rudyard Kipling. The story is hard to read so far. There are a lot of words I don't know. He writes "Best Beloved" a lot. What is Best Beloved? Today something really exciting happened. I met a small man with a smoking thing. He was very nice, but he didn't say much. He gave me a present. It was a pair of bink it was a pair of binokool it was a pair of binoculars. They make things look relly big. And very close. I looks at plants and grass and birds and trees. I found a nest in the tree outside my window with the binoculars. I wrote a thank you letter and took it to the Door at the Tower. I hope he gives it to the one who gave me the present. I love my gift.

Krait woke on the third morning well rested and content. He was just warm enough, the breeze coming in his window was just cool enough, and the singing of the birds was just sweet enough. Krait started his day with a smile. He slipped out from the softness of his bed and straightened his dark pajamas. He marveled at how his tiny hands looked so white and pale against his pajamas. He stripped the shirt over his head without undoing the buttons and his tail proceded to pull at the leg of his pants. Krait sat on the edge of his bed in the nude, enjoying the softness of his covers and the feeling of the morning breeze on his skin and ruffling his fair hair. At length Krait stood and wandered over to the trunk in the corner of his room. He opened the lid and removed his only set of clothing from where it was neatly folded. He slid on his underwear - freshly washed by Nanny Construct or one of the other workers - and slid on his white shorts over top. He dropped the jumper over his hair and pulled his thin ponytail out from under the collar. He pulled on white socks and then his soft boots. He fiddled with the ribbons on them for a while, and finally tied them in lopsided knots to fasten the height of the boots to his legs. Finally he pulled the soft arm warmers over his pale skin, already pricked with goosebumps from the breeze. When he was ready, Krait left his room with a soft click of the knob and went for a walk.

Day Three: Today i went to the Mall. I was looking for a toy to play with. I found a new friend. She is snakey like me...but she is pink. Her name is Olivia. We got toys. I got a game called Scrabble. It is a word game. I hope it will help my reading. I also got an art set! It has crayons, and pastels, and felts, and pencil crayons and pencil and eraser. I can't wait to use it! Olivia got a pink kite. I don't know what it is for, but maybe she will show me how to use it too.

Krait will learn in the future his binoculars aren't just what they appear to be. Apparently they have a memory, and "record" everything that Krait views through them. By just thinking about a memory of a time viewing through them, the binoculars with show the image of that time through the lenses.

From the moment Krait fell in the library, his mind has been racing with many images, knowledge flows into his head and is soaked up like a sponge. It soon ends, and is replaced with a peaceful dream that eventually fades as eyes begin to open. Krait soon finds himself in a place that is not his old room, but almost appears like it. All his possessions are here including a set of clothes beside his bed, he will need these as he is currently naked. Kait has changed, grown taller and smarter, and his lisp is gone. This is Krait's new home, a small house infact, with everything he would need bar some new clothes. It also appears clothing wasn't the only thing he removed, as sitting on the end of his bed, is a shed skin that looks like the younger him.

Krait drifted out of the dream, his muscles felt well-rested, and it took him a moment of lying comforted in the blankets of his bed before he began to recall what had happened. Krait could picture the library and the faces of those other Rosin. He could vaguely remember the sensation that had overcome him, and then? And then there was nothing. Krait rubbed his head and sat up. His arms were longer, more slender, the soft pudge of his body was gone. His skin seemed whiter, and the stripes on his tail blacker. It was then he noticed the shell of his younger self on the end of the bed. Krait held his breath and stared at it, wondering it if might move. The rudder of his tail reach out from under the covers and tapped at the shed skin. It shifted, but seemed to deflate in the process. Krait crawled out from under the covers and moved on his hands and knees towards the skin. He held it up and stared at it. "What are you?" He whispered to it. "You're my friend, my self, my conscience..." He murmured to it before setting down carefully on the covers again. Krait swung his feet to the floor and was startled when they hit the floor with a jarring thud. He had never been able to touch the floor before. Krait stood up and moved towards the tall mirror stading next to his closet. There, in the glassy reflection Krait saw a tall and slim youth standing, naked and motionless. The youth in the looking glass had silvery white skin from head to foot, and a black band on his brow, another on his neck, and a third on his chest. His white hair fell over his shoulders and spilled around a handsome face that contained two large, questioning dark eyes. Krait swished his tail, and as the reflection matched his motion, Krait realized it aws him. This new body, this new form. It was him. He placed his hands on his face and slowly let his fingers drag down and trace over his nose, his cheeks, his jaw, his neck, his chest, his stomach, his legs. "Hello..." He said to his reflection. Krait stepped back, painfully conscious of his nakedness and moved bac towards the bed. He pulled on the loose corderoy and velvet pants folded there for him, buttoning the back fly up over the base of his tail. He pulled the tea shirt over his head and felt the smooth brush of it against the fresh band of scales that had developed over his chest. He pulled the armlets over his cold and naked arms and hugged himself. "I'm going to get a home for you, Friend." Krait whispered to the skin that sat so dejected on the bed. As if it had spoken, Krait responded. "Very well, I'll get you a nice box then. Would you like that? Yes? Alright." Krait nodded and looked about for his binoculars. He slung them around his neck, making sure the caps for the lenses were secure and then slipped out of his room. To Krait's surprise, the hallway of the Development House did not greet him. Instead a short hallway lead to a bathroom, kitchen and small living room. Krait suddenly felt so very alone. He ignored the empty bookshelf and the unused sitting chair and swept out of the house as quickly as he could.

Day Seven I need to find a laquered box for my...Laticauda. I've decided I cannot part with it...with him. Laticauda has been with me...I need him...I need to remember. He is the only one that I can count on. He is the only one that I know, and the only one that knows me. I need a laquered box for Laticauda. I will find one in this city...and if I cannot find one suitable, then I will find Sparks and beg him to fashion one. Laticauda needs a placeto live in order to preserve him...I don't want him to crumble in time. I need a lacquered box.

Day Eight I saw Keshi in the mall. She gave me a card that she made herself. It was a get well card...I wonder if I gave them all a fright. I appreciated the card...but I don't know if that really came across the way I meant it. Keshi helped me find a box for Laticauda. She wears these pretty kimono dresses, and suggested one of the laquered boxes that kimono are stored in. I managed to find a really beautiful box of deepest midnight blue and so glossy it looks like liquid or like a lozenge candy... I made sure that Laticauda was comfortable, I nestled him in my old clothes, since they're familiar to him, and I don't fit them any more. He was appreciative, and I think that he'll be happy enough in his home. For now the box sits below my bed, and from there he wishes me sweet dreams.

It was a time when Krait felt most tired that he slipped into a deep deep slumber, and that he did not awake for a whole day. During this time his body changed once more, growing and morphing into his adult stage. His teenage mind grows more intelligent and wise as the knowledge of an adult purs into every part of his brain. When he awakens once more, he will find his physic the fit form of an adult, that he shed his skin again and that his legs are now replaces by a seprents tail.
