Not everyone is a bender. Simple as that. I doubt all of the Air Nomads were even benders, but they were probably all spiritual. They probably all rode Bison and what not but couldn't bend. All the MONKS were benders. It was an Air bending temple.

Not having all of the Air nomads be benders is probably gonna be what saves their race. There were Air Nomads who went into hiding, not being benders or what ever, but their descendants, at least one of them is bound to be able to air bend and Aang will find and teach them. Thus the rebirth of the air nomds, they are probably saving that little tid-bit for season four: the Book of Air

Some people want to be benders and some want to be warriors and he likes to be a warrior more. Maybe if the kids in the southern kingdom had a good master, then maybe some of them would convert from trying to learn to be a warrior from Sokka to being a waterbender with Katara, but they didn't have that before so it was harder for them to learn, but now that Sokka is able to try to learn now, he just doesn't want to because that's just who he is.

Jeesh... I haven't even seen all tha first season and I can tell you that the Air tribe was the only tribe that everyone was benders.

Like in the beginning Katara said that she was the only bender in the northern (?) water tribe...

Ahhh! Don't kill me! I only know the things about Avatar that my friend Alyssa pounds into my brain! It might be the southern water tribe... ?

I agree. It reminds me of X-Men with the X gene. Not everyone has it even if both of the parents are mutants. I guess it goes with avatar, too. Yet, a certain trait is passed down by the group of people.

Now that you mention it... Aang is the last airbender but not the last air nomad... YES! I have total faith they will find more air nomads and maybe an airbender (or more). -- (Sorry, just a thing me and my sister believe. They are nomads therefore it would be hard to kill them all because they could just go into caves in the mountains and hide for a few a long time...)

I can only assume he never felt like learning how. @w@ Once the warriors of the village went to war, Katara was the only bender left, and she was self-taught. I can see Sokka not having the patience to teach himself bending when there's a machete he can just pick up and swing. x3~

Not everyone can bend...sometimes I think Sokka gets a little jealous cause he can't...

Certain genes passed down from parents allow you to bend. Sokka doesn't have them

i believe bending is a genetic trait not something you can just learn. i would say he was just passed over and katara was the lucky one also you need a non bender in the crew.
