It would be nice if that were true. Murder is such a horrid thing.

Please do not forget what the Japanese were capable in WWII in China and the rest of East Asia. The crime that they have now is nothing compared to the atrocities they commited against humanity during that time.

Humanity as a whole is quite capable of doing horrible things. The difference is the amount of media time devoted to it. Murders here get a lot of air time instead of the quick run over it gets in america. One murder gets weeks of coverage while in america its just a few lines said on the news. Furthermore, its pretty well established that the system in Japan itself is corrupted. Hell, in 2003, it was a commonly established fact that the Police were paying off Yakuza and various Bousouzoku groups to not to come.... :/

Anywho. I think one of the biggest difference between the US and Japan is that the US has many smaller crimes and social disasters and such, where as Japan and fewer, larger disasters. The murders and crime that do happen aren't just a petty drug store robbery that results in a murder. No. When the Japanese want to do something, they do it "right". As for the suicides, did you know aprox. 90 people in Japan commited suicide every day in 03'? 90 people CHOSE to take their own lives everyday. If you go to rotten.com(warning: can be.... disturbing), there is an excellent picture of a Japanese suicide jumper. There was a manga that really depicted this well, called Confidencial Confessions vol. 1. I had to give it to a friend of mine when she was becoming "depressed", and cutting herself. Anywho. Yeah. When the Japanese want to do something, they go all out. They don't hold back the gore, violence, anything. But none the less, I still feel that it's safer there than here. The police are very involved in neighborhood, and I believe that there is atleast one police station on every residential street, and two on most commercial streets.

They made this storie into a movie, something like um "suicide club" or something...like all these girls jumped and commited suicide or something and were apart of the "suicide club" they weren't all part of the same school either.

I have seen the movie and did a long research on internet and on books to find out that actually, that story is completely made up. 2 years ago, on the news, this was confirmed. I don't know why this information was not largely spread, but anyway, I am glad to know there was not a "suicide trend" among highschool students.

As for Japan's suicide rate, it might seem higher than in other countries (personal experience example: 4 suicides in one month, and i'm only talking about those that happened on the train line i wanted to take). However when I was in highschool, my economy teacher said that we cannot compare japan's suicide rate so freely, because the concentration of the population is much different than in other countries. He said that if someone studied suicide in comparison with the areas where it is committed, Japan would have an almost equal suicide rate as in the USA. I don't know if he is right or not, but well...

I saw this one story where this girl From England went to Japan to work at a night club thing. You have to go on a certain amount of dates with the guys or u loose your job. So this girl went somewhere with this rich guy and he like abused her (sexually) and beat her. He had her tied up in this torture chamber. (It made me really scared I kept looking behind my back seeing if these dudes were ganna like kill me!) But then they didn't know what happened to her for 2 yrs or something and they found her buried in cement off the coast or somewhere by the sea. I was really scared I saw the interview with her parents on the internet news. I personally hate reading the mews and seeing stories like that but since it was Japan.......

i hate hearing about crime anywhere, but on the up side Japan does have a low crime rate, but still i'm the type of person who let these things really get to me and cry because of it redface anywhoo i'm just sad the more i research Japan the more i become a little more afraid. I make things bigger than they are, but still this really saddends me.

The reason why crime is ao high and somewhat petty in some countries, and small, but horrifically offensive in others, is something I call The Balloon Theory, which means that the harder it is to pop the balloon, the louder and more notciable the resulting bang is.

Example, people in more expressive countries are typically free wheeling, and fun loving, and thus have a lower stress rate, and less of a chance of doing something as dramatic as kill their best friend by slashing her throat and wrists. Where as people in countries that encourage bottling things up, and keep it to themselves are most likely to collapse under all the pressure their put under, and do the most noteworthy crime possible*like jumping off a cliff or carving off a person's skin like a T-shirt*

So, in short, less societal pressure=less dramatic, but more frequent crimes, and more societal pressure=more horrifying, but less frequent crimes. Same goes for a lot of other things in life. The more you do something, the less special and noteworthy it becomes, and vice versa. Of course, this is only if you don't find a way to outdo what you did before.
