I was wondering how I could widen my range. I can do almost four octaves comfortably, but I really want to to expand it. In my choirs, I sing everything from soprano 1 to tenor (in barbershop, tenor to bass) but I'd love to do more. Any suggestions?

You really can't widen your range I don't think it just has to do with your family history. I can go Soprano 1 to upper tenor notes comfortably because my mom's a soprano 1 and my dad's a bass.

You can stretch it a little bit, but not a lot. Frankely, a four octave range is nothing to complain about. But just stretch your range at the end of your warm-up, that's what I've been doing. My voice teacher is convinced I should be able to sing Soprano 2, but my range, when I started with her, was a little wavery on an E, now I can get up to an F confidently, and I'm starting to be able to move to the higher notes. It's slow progress, but it's progress none the same. Make sure you don't hurt yourself, and just push yourself a little farther than you're comfortable every day.

Actually, it is possible to expand your range, though it takes time. One way you can do this is to work your upper and lower registers and increase your ability to navigate your passaggio without audible stop (or "break") in your register. This can be accomplished with daily warmups that include two octave scales and two octave leaps held on half notes.

I don't recommend doing this on your own, however, as they can be very harmful if done incorrectly and without a proper background in technical skills. Talk to a voice instructor or your choral director about expanding your range, they should be willing to work with you and ensure you do it without harming your vocal folds. 3nodding

I dunno.
My dad was in chorus. The choir director asked him not to sing, so he quit, so I don't really know what range he was. At all.
But my mom was an Alto 2.
And I'm a Sop1.

And Nuraeariel, I definately have a break. And it's in the worst possible place (For me, at least) It's the F right above middle C.
What was worse, was that my solo this year HIGHLIGHTED that horribly. Wasn't good.

Oh no! Well there are ways to make your passaggio less noticeable 3nodding They involve proper breath support, of course, and ocvate intervals.

Good Lord, child. If I had to classify you just by your range, I'd say you are a coloratura soprano. Can you sing fast passages easily?
