2025 Star Festival Prompt The Fireflies (6) : In the warm summer nights, little glowing lights begin to bob and dart through the city. Fireflies are mating, so this isn't uncommon in itself; in the past few days you've probably seen hundreds of fireflies. What makes these lights so unique is that they seem to change color; you might see a blue one, a green one, a red one. They flicker randomly, and something just seems off with them. If you come into contact with one, you will find yourself with a strange electric jolt. They cannot be caught, and will flicker away if you pursue too aggressively. This isn't the first time they've appeared in Destiny City, but no one's been able to tell where they came from or where they're going. No matter how quickly you chase them, they always seem to disappear before you can find any answers. Jackson's head was spinning from everything he had been through today as he headed back towards the Star Festival grounds. From just hanging out at the reservoir and enjoying a day where he had little responsibility and a whole lot of time to spend doing whatever he wanted to do, to exploring the caves where the glowing caterpillars were and meeting a new hmmm friend, maybe, to almost dying as he passed one of the newest construction sites that had cropped up in Star City. That had, frankly, been the weirdest and most exhausting part of the day. He hadn't exactly meant to end up in the construction site, but he had ended up in the middle of some kind of super powered fight and he couldn't shake how familiar the girl in red had seemed. It was like someone from your childhood vacation appearing after a long time and you just can't place where you know them from or even their name. Jackson didn't like unsolved questions or uncertainties, so this feeling of familiarity was driving him mad. After pondering the events of the day and rolling them all over in his head repeatedly, Jackson had gone home and spent a very long time in the shower debating on whether to come to the festival tonight or just flop into bed and go to sleep. Climbing into bed after what had ended up being a very eventful day still sounded like a good idea but, frankly, he had ultimately chosen to go ahead and go out. He found that more often than not, if he just went to things, he didn't regret going. He rarely regretted staying home either, but yeah. So here he was. The musician was once again in a black T shirt, though this one had a white graphic of a raven in a tree on it, black jeans, and black converse high top sneakers. Though he had a certain style, Jackson wasn't one to think too much about clothes, especially if he was just going about the city by himself. He would probably put more effort into his clothing choices if he was actually planning on meeting someone, but that wasn't the case here, even if he did half-hope that Roka would be here again. After a little while of wandering around again as he had done the night before, Jackson had purchased a drink and decided to rest on a bench a little bit away from the lights and the crowds and he was rewarded for his silent moment with a different kind of lights as fireflies began to blink out into the night around him. He had seen the colorful fireflies before and, as almost everyone else had, tried to catch them, but they were as elusive as if they were wil-o-the-wisps instead of real fireflies. So Jackson just leaned back and settled into the bench he was sitting on to enjoy the quieter area and the light show. It was nice, especially after a long, eventful day, to just sit quietly and watch the world around him. As he sat and watched both the fireflies blink around him and the mildly distant people meander around the festival, he twirled a fuchia star charm that he had gotten from a booth around his finger.

”Well well, if it isn’t the Jackson of All Trades,” Kit commented with a grin, flopping onto the bench next to Jackson without bothering to ask. He tended to be presumptuous that way, but if someone asked him to leave, he would also oblige them. “How are you coming along on those three bachelors’ degrees of yours? Pretty sure you already got your art one, right?”
He and Jackson had taken art classes together when they had both been after their bachelors’ and he’d heard how Jackson aspired to also major in music and teaching. Kit himself was on his second degree studying psychology and contemplating going for his masters, but he had always been amazed that Jackson endeavored to tackle so many majors. If he hadn’t had a break for a bit going back home, he was pretty sure he would have been burnt out on school by then if he’d been Jackson. It was possible the other young man was taking less classes than he thought, but he somehow doubted it. One couldn’t really slack very much if they wanted to get a degree in four years; especially if your goal was to get three.
“What are you doing out and about? I haven’t seen you in quite a while. Not since we were taking classes together, I don’t think. You still do art? Which of your majors are you working on now?”
Realizing he was getting quite nosy, Kit paused and chuckled sheepishly. “Sorry about that; bad habit of mine. You don’t have to answer everything, of course; I just get awful curious. Regardless, it’s good to see you again, man.”
He noticed Jackson’s star charm and grinned. “Oh, you got one of those, too? Pretty neat, aren’t they?” Taking something out of his pocket briefly, he held it up to reveal a Sapphire Star Charm. Kit watched it glint in the light a moment, admiring the way it shone before pocketing it again. “There are so many colorful things around here around this time of year. Not just the decorations, but in nature, too. I’d ask if you noticed, but considering you’re an artist, I’m sure I don’t need to.” He chuckled again and waved an arm indicatively at the fireflies. “Like these little guys, for instance. So beautiful. Like little multicolored pixies.”
He smiled at the twinkling, different lights for a while, lost in thought and admiration. “Makes me want to paint them. Too bad I left my paints at home. The lighting would probably be bad for painting anyway, though, pretty as it is. Too dim.” Kit took out his phone. “Maybe I can take a picture to paint later. Should probably turn off the flash…”
Snapping a few photos with his phone, he tried to capture the brilliance of as many differently-colored fireflies as he could. “Man, I should have dragged Ty out here to come see this, but she’s stuck at home working on a project. She would have loved to see you again, I’m sure.”

Jackson chuckled as his friend spoke. "You've got them mixed up. I have my teaching degree. I'm going for art and music degrees." he explained. He'd been able to preplan and take a lot of his art classes as electives, and he didn't have to take his general classes again for any of his degrees so he wasn't extremely loaded down with his course schedule. He still had less time than his other classmates who weren't double majoring, but he wasn't dying either. "It does seem we don't cross paths as much anymore. You're taking psychology, yes?" He had seen the other man heading in the direction of that building sometimes and seemed to recall him mentioning going down that path. He chuckled again and the other man transitioned from his stream of questions to an apology for his stream of questions. "It's alright. We haven't seen or talked in a while. I'm just here enjoying the festival. It's nice to break out of the study room every once in a while. What are you up to here?"Leaning back and stretching his arms out over the back of the bench, he watched as Kit continued to yammer about art and the fireflies for a moment. "A video might work better than a picture." he offered after the other man made a few unsuccessful attempts.

Chuckling, Kit asked, “Wouldn’t you want to learn the subjects before learning how to teach them? Or are those not the subjects you plan to teach?” He supposed he could have just planned to teach general education. But regardless, far be it from Kit to have told Jackson in what order he should have gotten his degrees. He seemed to already have a plan in mind. “Well, either way, good for you!”
His brows rose as Jackson mentioned his pursuit of a psychology degree and he grinned. “Wow, nice memory! Yeah, that’s right. Been really into self-help stuff after helping Ty out with some things back home and figuring out a lot along the way. Thought it would be nice if it could help other people, too. But I need to learn more first.”
Repositioning himself, he playfully maneuvered to lie with his back on the bench seat, his legs propped up, and his head in Jackson’s lap if he let him put it there. When asked what he was up to, he answered, “Oh, same as you, sounds like. I needed some fresh air and I wanted to check out the festivities.” Kit paused in realization when Jackson mentioned a video. “Ohhh, riiiight! Thanks!”
He then sat up long enough to take a few short videos before settling back down once again in Jackson’s lap, grinning up at him. “You got plans for the festival, or you just looking around and hanging out?”

"I already know music and art. I just need the piece of paper that tells other people that I know what I'm talking about." Jackson said, smirking and sticking his tongue out a little at Kit. Then he nodded along as Kit explained his reasoning for his psychology pursuits. "How is Ty? Is that the reason you went home for a bit?" He asked with a raised eyebrow. He knew that Kit had taken a break in his studies but hadn't seen a reason to poke into why. When Kit shifted to put his head in his lap and continued talking, Jackson didn't move. He had long ago made peace with Kit's touchy nature. Not being a very touchy person himself, it had taken some getting used to, but Jackson didn't really mind it then or now. If he ever did express a comfort zone, Kit never crossed it, and Jackson preferred people to be as much themselves as possible. "No solid plans. Just looking around and hanging out. What about you?" He asked, looking down at Kit with a curious quirk to his raised eyebrow.

”Alright, alright, Mr. Self-taught Teacher,” Kit laughed light-heartedly. “Better watch that tongue though. A cat might get it,” he warned with a wink.
At the mention of his younger sister, Kit sighed, but continued to smile. “Yeeeah. She was having a tough time with our parents since she was in those difficult teen years where kids butt heads with the people they once thought knew everything. So I went back to support her and help her figure things out. After she finished some schooling of her own, she managed to get a book published and started looking for freelance work as an author and illustrator. So I’ve been helping her with that,” Kit explained. “Hehe. Thanks for asking. How about your own family? They been okay?”
Folding his arms behind his head, he grinned up at Jackson. “Same. But you should really do some art with me again. Maybe a collaboration sometime.”

"Then I'd really be just a prop for you talking to yourself." Jackson said with a smirk, nodding along to show he was listening as Kit explained his younger sister's situation. Jackson had met her a couple of times and she was definitely cute and excitable in a very little sister kind of way. Sometimes Jackson wondered what their parents were like to produce these kinds of children. "I didn't realize she'd published a book." He said with a raised eyebrow. It was equally surprising and not surprising at all. "What's the title? I'll have to hunt it down." He added casually, but seriously before considering Kit's question about his own family. "My family is alright. My parents are getting older, of course. My mother is doing well, but can't get around the way she used too." He said. "Painting again with you would be fun. Did you have a collaboration in mind?"

Kit grinned. “Who said I’d be talking? I’d probably be too busy stealing your tongue,” he said with a devious look before sticking out his own tongue meaningfully.
“It’s been a few books now, actually. Some are children’s picture books, a couple are young adult novels, but I better not tell you their names or she might get embarrassed and try to kill me,” he chuckled. “Sorry. You’ll have to ask her yourself next time you see her.”
Listening to Jackson talk about his parents, Kit nodded solemnly, thinking about old age and what that did to a person. But it was also why he was a firm believer of living in the moment and making the most of every second one could.
“Hmm…I didn’t have anything particular in mind yet, exactly, but I’m sure between the two of us, we can come up with something. Maybe painting a wall of Ty’s room with these fireflies. Some pixie colony scene or something. Bet she’d like that.” He beamed up at Jackson again. “Plus it would give you a reason to come over since evidently you need one.”

Jackson shook his head with an amused smile, despite a small blush creeping across his face. He knew that flirting was almost like breathing with Kit, and he had long ago (mostly) stopped taking it personally and usually just brushed it off, but the other man's forwardness still caught him off guard sometimes.
"You can't embarrass her if she's not here." He said, taping Kit's forehead and putting his elbow back on the back of the bench as Kit ruminated about what they could do together. "I'd be up for that. It seems like you need a reason to invite me over more than I need a reason to come over." He said, sticking his tongue out again. "Does she have her own place now, or is she living with you or your parents?"
”I think I’m ready to walk around some more. Do you want to come with, or do you have somewhere else to slink off to?” He asked after a moment with a smirk and a raised eyebrow, looking down at the man.

Thoroughly amused at Jackson’s slight blush and pleased that the other student had caught his meaning, he reached up to playfully pinch his cheek before sitting up from his place on Jackson’s lap and moving his legs off the bench to set his feet on the ground.
“Maybe not while she’s not here, but if you say anything about her books, she’s going to know someone told you about them and then she’ll know it was me and I’d rather not deal with her wrath even belatedly, thank you very much,” he answered, chuckling after Jackson tapped his forehead.
“Oh, I don’t need a reason to invite you over,” Kit answered, sneering wickedly. “I’d just abduct you. But I’m being nice for now, so better take advantage while you still can.” He turned in his seat when Jackson stuck his tongue out again, his grin positively devilish. “And I’m serious about that tongue. This is your final warning.”
He pushed himself up to his feet and stretched. “She’s living with me, now. We had planned ages ago for her to live with me after she moved out, but our parents kept saying they didn’t think she was ready to be out on her own until she had something of a breakdown about it. I don’t think they realized their being so controlling of her life was what made her have the breakdown. Took me forever to convince them that actually moving out would be good for her instead of bad.”
Finished stretching, he glanced behind him at Jackson, turning to offer him a hand up. “‘Slink off’, huh? What am I, a cat?” he asked, laughing. “Nah, I’m perfectly happy following you around if you’ll let me. The festival’s more fun when you spend it with someone else, anyway.”

Jackson batted Kit's hand away lazily but amused as Kit pinched his cheek. He kept his tongue to himself though, as it was better not to tempt the man. He'd do it just because he said he would.
He chuckled as Kit sat up. "You're the one who won't just tell me a title and told me to ask her. So if you tell me now or if I ask her later, you're doomed." He said with a smirk, standing up as well. "Glad she's finally out though and feeling better. Even the least strict parents can be over beating sometimes, but they generally mean well," generally "Even if they don't really hit the mark."
He slipped his hands into his pockets and smirked again. "You are, in fact, a cat in many ways." he said with another small laughed. "and the festival is more fun with someone to go around it with."

When Jackson explained how Kit was doomed either way, Kit dropped his head back and groaned. “You're right…drat. Silly me. Better just pretend we never had this discussion, then,” he decided, chuckling. “And yeah, you're right about parents, too. It's a lot easier to see in hindsight, I think, now that we're away from them.”
Sticking his hands into his own pockets, he playfully bumped Jackson, grinning more broadly than ever. “Come on, then. Let's go check out what they're selling in the vendor's stalls. I'm starved.”
