Characters: Anika and Gabriel
Plot: On the outskirts of a small town live a young couple who have come to live there for a few years now. Not much is known about them prior to their arrival, but the little things they do for the community meant that few cared about their past. Their future was bright enough to blot out the rest.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

Making his way back home after work, Gabriel felt a certain kind of accomplishment in all that he'd gotten done today. With every word he wrote, he could tell that the people around him were really getting an understanding of what he was trying to convey. It wasn't as immediate as what he was used to, but given his situation, it couldn't be helped. Besides, the fact that they were starting to pick up on things at all was a sign that he was doing his job correctly. After all, what sort of teacher would he be if he couldn't get his students to learn?

There were quite a few perks to working there, really. The sense of pride he could take in his work went far beyond the glitz and glamor of being a freelance writer. To give the kids in this town even a sense of the joy that reading and writing brought him really was the best. On top of that, it would give them job opportunities that even some of their parents didn't have. Not that he was leaving that be; the adult courses were proving beneficial as well. Such a consistent paycheck wasn't bad either. It did mean that he wasn't left with a lot of time to work on novels, but he didn't mind so much. In a way, he was living in his own fairy tale.

Gabriel gathered a few things on the way, having saved up for something nice. He may not be nearly as distinguished of a cook as the chefs of his childhood, but he really felt like he was getting the hang of things. He only hoped that it would turn out as well as he wanted it to. After all, his patron for the evening had certainly earned it for all the hard work they'd been putting in as well.

Arriving at their home, he almost felt like he had to pinch himself. It might not have been nearly as large as what either of them was used to...but it was theirs. Theirs and theirs alone. Gabe couldn't help but smile every time he saw it from that alone. Entering their humble abode, he placed the flowers he bought into a vase on the table, poured some water in, and got to work. He had a decent amount of time before she got home, but he didn't want to take any chances.

"Pâtes à la Ratatouille" made it sound like such a fancy dish, but it was a lot less scary now that he had everything laid out in front of him. Slice some zucchini here...some eggplant there...they should probably be about equal, right? Getting a fire going, he got to sautéing. So far, so good. Luckily, he was able to save up for something extra special that would hopefully cover up any mistakes he made in the process: two hefty balls of burrata that he'd place on top when it was time to serve.

Things came together quicker than he expected, so he kept everything covered when he finished. Even if it meant he'd have dinner later than he normally would, perhaps even hours later if it were a particularly rough day, he didn't want to eat yet. It wasn't worth it if it wasn't with her. Getting some water, Gabe sat down and waited for his favorite person to arrive.

And who says happy endings aren't real?

"Talking" "Thoughts"

When she had taken Gabriel’s hand, Anika hadn’t anticipated what would happen next. They were running into the unknown, praying no one would find them. And now, they were here. She wasn’t a princess anymore. News had spread that a new heir had been discovered recently, but she did her best not to trouble herself with it. It was easier to focus on work.

The tools she had afforded to her weren’t of the same caliber as those her nursemaids used to heal her wounds, but it was enough. She couldn’t heal others with her words, but she could coax them into a sleep when she stitched them up. It troubled her how many men would walk in each day, hoping the war might end one of these days, but Corthyr would not let up. Boils, bruising, vomiting- Anika had seen it all, but she lived for it. She was finally living her dream. Not the spotlight her father laid out for her, but being able to truly help people.

Walking home alone, Anika feared the idea that she might still be recognized, but Gabriel always assured her that it was nearly impossible. It had been years now, but she was sure that if she was ever to be discovered, there was a world of pain and imprisonment waiting for her. Some nightmares still troubled her at night, but there he was at her side, never leaving, just like he had promised her the day they had left together. With him at her side, there was nothing she couldn’t do.

Arriving at their home, she smiled. It wasn’t a castle, but inside she felt more adoration than any of her fans prior. Enthusiastically, she opened the door to be welcomed by the smell of vegetables cooking on the stove. It was not a five-star meal, but she found it far tastier than anything she had at the castle. Maybe it was because she no longer had to fear it being poisoned or just that there was someone who cared about her who was preparing it. " I’m home, Bello. Where is my customary greeting?" She grinned at the man who was waiting for her before she started her boots at the door.

At the end of the day, she was still a princess. Instead of many servants waiting on her, only one person was waiting on her. But there were just a few rules she wanted him to follow. One, she wished to wrap her arms around her person after such a long day. Two, it had been eight long hours since she had been able to crack wise with anyone for fear they might no longer wish to use her services. And third, if it were up to her, the man would be greeting her with a glass of wine and nothing but an apron, but concerns were expressed about her ability to drink and unwrap him at the same time. As well as the fear of their dinner getting cold. These are all valid concerns, but logic was never something Anika liked to use.

" How many brains did you mold today?" Anika spoke, getting her boots off and approaching the dining table. The vest he wore made Anika’s heart swoon, thinking about the teacher out there molding minds, making a difference in his own right. She was curious to hear about his day, knowing hers wasn’t meant for dinner discussion. Teaching others to read and write showed Anika how misguided she was prior to coming here. The idea of a quality education wasn’t something that she had ever considered a gift before, but seeing how little those knew in this town alone was enough to help open her mind more.

                                                        GABRIEL ♫ MONTGOMERY
                                                        DUKE OF MUSIQUE

                                                        Hm?

Gabriel could hear footsteps approaching. Not just anyone's, though; Gabriel could recognize the sound of those heels in the middle of a hurricane. Lighting some candles by the table, he watched the front door open and was greeted with the sight of his one and only. " I’m home, Bello. Where is my customary greeting?" Gabe had meant to be by her side already but had been far too stunned by the incredible woman before him to move. It didn't matter if she'd been through a ten-hour shift or a hundred-hour shift; Anika shined above it all like a star that had plucked itself from the heavens above to grace those down below with her presence. And he got to spend every day with her. It's a wonderful world.

But not one without its problems, of course. He could smell hints of one Corthyr toxin or another on her. Not enough to hurt either of them, of course; it likely lingered from a patient she had been in contact with during her shift. The forever war that plagued the continent meant that countless men, women, and children got caught in the crossfire. Gabriel would ask about the terrible things that Anika endured to help those in need, and it terrified him to think that there was no end to it in sight. And yet...Anika persisted. Whatever he did to support her, that took a level of resilience that was born from her strength alone. There were difficult days, sure. Terrible, terrible days. Despite it all, though, he knew they'd make it through. No force in the world was mightier than the two of them together. And none ever could be.

His poetic musings would have to wait, though; there were more important matters to attend to. "You'll have to forgive me, mi tesoro. Just admiring the view." Making a stride towards her as she got her boots off, he brought his hands over to lift one of hers so that he might gently plant his lips upon it. " How many brains did you mold today?" Looking back up at the queen of their humble abode, her smile made him feel as though time itself was honor-bound to stop so they could savor the moment of their shared bliss. It was sad in a way that such feelings weren't true, but sharing a meal together was just as enjoyable.

"A great many, or so I'd like to think. Whether the molding sticks or not has yet to be seen, but I was able to drag most of them through their first paragraphs today."

Walking around her as she continued to make her way to the dinner table, he wrapped his arms around her and stole a kiss on her cheek before he finished preparing their plates. Smirking, he went to take the covers off of their meals. His timing wasn't as bad as he thought, as they were still quite warm. Going to the kitchen for a moment, he brought out the burrata with a plate and tongs and nestled them atop their respective dinner plates. With a decorative drizzle of olive oil in a fairly uniform circle, it was all set. "And what of your day? I'm sure there were some ghastly sights, but I'm hoping to wash them away with some better ones." Perhaps he shouldn't have said that. Was she going to ask about him parading around naked again? Not that he'd mind it per se, but he promised himself he'd save that for special occasions only. Birthdays, anniversaries, and the like. Especially when it was winter.

Putting the plate and tongs for the burrata away, Gabriel came back with a bottle of wine and promptly opened the bottle. Carefully pouring glasses for them both and setting them on the table, he felt rather proud of how much better he'd gotten at uncorking bottles. Such tasks were the duty of others in his upbringing, but he felt as though he'd adapted rather well. Gabriel then pulled out a seat for her before doing the same for himself. Looking at all he set up tonight, perhaps this was a special occasion. But his clothes would remain on for the time being.

And now for the final touch. Gabriel strolled over to the most recent addition to their home: a brand-new record player. They had held onto a secondhand model for quite some time, but it had fallen into disrepair, and this town hadn't someone with the skills to fix it back up. It had cost them a fair deal, but what was a home in Musique of all places if it didn't have music playing? Placing on a vinyl for some piano melodies to hopefully relax them both after a long day, he finally sat himself down. His smile had lost its mischievous edge, but it remained on his face the whole time as he'd now get to spend time with his best friend and the love of his life.

                                                        "Buon appetito, Magnificetta."

To say the road up till now was easy would be to tell the biggest lie to ever be told, and they may very well face worse hardships in the future...but for now? Now was the time for wine, pasta, and reminding himself that he probably shouldn't show off the little handkerchief one of his students had gifted him yet. Plaid was the devil's cloth and not to be discussed on such an otherwise carefully constructed occasion. He'd save that discussion for the morning.

"Talking" "Thoughts"

After many letdowns and misguided attempts to become the queen, here she was. Joining the dining table, she couldn’t help but wonder what was taking place back at the castle, had her father forced the whole family to sit down as he listed off all their failures, or had they all sat in silence? Whatever they were eating didn’t have half the heart that the meals her man provided for her, as well as the assurance that the person preparing it only wanted her happiness over anything else.

As his lips pressed against her cheek, she felt herself snap out of the wonders of what if and back to the blissful reality they were currently residing in. Gabriel had only scratched the surface of the ways her mind continued to torment her, and she felt it best to forget the past, no matter how heavily it tried to haunt her. Gabriel made an effort to still make her feel like a princess in her own right, unveiling each dish as she oohed and awed at each one in an effort to stroke his ego. It was fun playing this game, the one where he lived to serve her and her alone. More importantly, where she understood what when he said he would cherish her and love her, he meant it.

The idea of him offering to wash away her sadness gave her some ideas, but nothing appropriate for the dinner table. Would that stop her? Of course not. " If you want to wash my sadness away, maybe we can save that for when I need a shower later," Anika smirked at the man before taking a drink of her wine. A side quest of hers was always to make Gabriel flustered, enamored by how wide the man’s eyes could get behind the sunglasses by the silly things she could say.

Anika racked her mind as to what would make the man put on such a display for the two of them, hopeful she hadn’t forgotten their anniversary. But knowing that was just the perks of dating a man who enjoyed surprising her as much as she liked to surprise him. The woman had even started wearing clothes more suited to his tastes, partially due to the fact she couldn’t justify wearing her favorite designers outside of their abode for fear of being discovered, but the wool skirt she was wearing today was a material she was still getting over.

" Grazie. Such a spread, I truly am the queen of my own kingdom." Her smile spread as she put down her glass, preparing herself to eat the burrata before her. Spoiled in her own right, this was never the life she had dreamed of living ten years ago, but here she was, pleased to eat something prepared just for her. Even when she lived back at the castle, she couldn’t say the same thing was true.

The soft cheese melted in her mouth, causing her to moan slightly at the deliciousness. " Oh, you have outdone yourself once again." What would she have done without him? The idea that she could ever dream of making something so special made her laugh. But there was no feeling of debt pressing down upon her, but of love and adoration. Not deserved by any means but appreciated, " I have been trying to learn how to cook from some of the other nurses, and I managed to boil pasta water the other day. Just you wait, one of these days I will have a king's feast prepared for you. Any requests?"
