”So it is singing that is the problem. I am glad that my musical preference will not present a problem. I would not want to cause you any difficulty. But should I take it that you do enjoy singing? When there is no risk involved, of course. It is a shame that I cannot hear it for myself.” Stephanie smiled as a thought occurred to him. ”Though I suppose I could take a page from the old stories and have myself securely tied down first.” That would not really work in his case, but Alosa did not need to know that. The idea still amused him and he hoped Alosa might get a smile from it as well.

”An hour?” Stephanie repeated in mild surprise. He was not opposed, he just had not expected it. From the way Alosa spoke of it, she might have suggested they go right away had there not been something she intended to set up. She even had a spot in mind which made Stephanie wipe a hand over his mouth to stifle a chuckle. Perhaps it was a favorite spot of hers? Well, it sounded enjoyable.

”That will be plenty of time; I will be there with bells on. Shall I bring my phonograph as well or do you have one of your own?” The temptation to peek at what Alosa might be planning was strong, but Stephanie resisted. He had learned long ago that sometimes spoiling the surprise for himself was not nearly as satisfying as he would have imagined it to be. Besides, Alosa seemed so eager to surprise him; how could he take that from her?

Alosa was beyond appreciative that he was not judging her for her power. Sure, she had told Luka and Ren knew about it but they were her family in the end. They were supposed to love her still, right? Stephanie was a different situation entirely; the most that he knew of her was from what she had told him and how they interacted in history class. Which to be fair was all positive interactions that she found herself enjoying despite the situation in which she found herself involved. Therefore, when he spoke up about his music choice she quickly shook her head. If she were prevented from listening to music, she would have actually gone crazy. “Oh absolutely not! I love to listen to music; it is just when I sing. When I was younger I used to absentmindedly do it, while thinking of something and that’s when it would happen.” She knew that likely, even if they were in the solarium there would not be much risk and it would only be for a fraction of a second that she did not realize what was happening. Her powers required focus, or an extreme situation for her to be able to use them after all.

She nodded her head again though when he posed the question of if she enjoyed singing. She smiled slightly, her eyes shifting down towards her food and for a brief second her eyes were almost sad. By the time she raised them back up she had pushed the emotion away. “ I do enjoy singing, if I’m around my sister it’s usually no problem, so it’s not like I can’t do it ever.” she still hoped to one-day sing for her brother though, he was a stronger personality than most and she would still want to know that he was in a position where she would not accidentally start something. Stephanie wanting to be able to hear her singing took her by surprise, but she felt her cheeks going a little pink at the thought. He would have wanted to hear her sing? She took a moment to register his next comment before she covered her mouth, laughing quietly. “You could! So long as I’m focused on an action we would be good anyway.” she also did not intend on singing around him yet, she had yet to have a conversation with Ren about how she could make it through music class without affecting those around her.

When he echoed her request she nodded happily, glad that he was up to the task of meeting her. She ate a little more of her lunch before she finally finished. She had spoken so much that she did not eat as quick as usual but she had been having fun! She hummed softly and shook her head, standing up as she rested her palms on the table. ” I have it covered! Just bring yourself and your favorite record. I can’t wait to show you, well, both of you!” she smiled up at Humphrey as well; before she picked up the plates she had been brought. She nodded her head as a goodbye as her hands were full. “ I’ll see you both in an hour!” with that, she headed off. She was happy about the plan and after someone took the dishes from her she headed back out, meeting up with the servant she had spotted before and began to discuss how she would make it all work.

She could not wait to spend time with Stephanie!

Stephanie had not meant to dampen the mood, but he supposed it could not be helped, given the subject matter. He had touched on something that had once brought her joy but had since been taken from her. He probably understood that better than most, having lost his ability to enjoy his beloved books, though the reasons were entirely different. At least he had offered a pleasantly distracting thought and Alosa seemed honestly surprised that he would have wanted to hear her sing. Why would that surprise her, he wondered? He had already admitted that he very much enjoyed music; how could he not be interested in the earnest crooning of a lovely songstress? Perhaps he would find a way to hear her sing someday.

But for today, he would be content enough to spend time in good company enjoying good music. Alosa entreated him to bring himself and his favorite record and Stephanie nodded with a smile. ”Very well. I very much look forward to it.” Humphrey also smiled when he was addressed, though it was clear that he still did not quite expect it.

Soon Alosa had left them to make her preparations and Stephanie enjoyed the rest of his meal in comfortable silence. He actually was looking forward to their little outing; it was not at all often that he spent time with friends. He did not honestly have very many friends. Alosa was pleasant, he enjoyed her company, and she seemed to enjoy his as well. Besides her, there was Milo, of course, though he had not spent very much time speaking to the quiet man since their first meeting. He would rectify that. Well, he would if he could think of an activity that would not bore the poor fellow to tears; he was truly abashed to realize just how uninteresting he was.

Once Stephanie had eaten and Humphrey had returned his used dishes, the two of them returned to his room to prepare. He had an hour, so the prince used that time to freshen up and change into new clothing. And of course he picked out a record he enjoyed; a selection of chamber music performed by a string quartet, clarinet, flute, and harp. The songs were of such haunting beauty and he had spent many evenings marveling in silence with no distraction but a glass of wine. Perhaps it would not be suitable, but… Well, Alosa had encouraged him to bring his favorite record and this was certainly a favorite of his.

On a whim, he asked if Humphrey might like to also make a selection. His manservant was quite surprised and quickly declined; that was not terribly surprising. Honestly, Stephanie did not actually know what kind of music Humphrey enjoyed listening to. Perhaps he should try to find out? Humphrey was always by his side and yet he simply was far too unaccustomed to speaking with him normally and naturally as Alosa did. He was not certain he even could do so… But then, he also knew that Humphrey was the same way; their relationship as prince and servant was one they were both perfectly comfortable with and preferred.

Eventually Stephanie made his way to the solarium, Humphrey in tow. He carried with him only the record he had selected, though a part of him still felt as though he should have contributed something more. Perhaps some tea and cookies would not have been seen amiss? Though they had just eaten, he was certain something light could have been prepared. But he had no idea what Alosa had in mind, so he would not make any plans that might have to be immediately dashed. Satisfied with that for the moment, Stephanie stepped into the solarium and began to shuck the long coat he had thrown on for the walk. ”Miss Alosa? I have arrived.”

Alosa admittedly hadn't fully thought out her plan, of course, she didn't often think things out that far ahead, but it worked out that she had noticed a particular servant at the side. The young woman had been around the castle many times, and despite not being a servant in the castle she was a friendly enough face for the princess to loop her in. Once Alosa had left the cafeteria she headed to her room while the woman helping her out got to work on her end. She didn't have a whole lot of records, but she had two that she brought with her and had played a couple of times. The ever-energetic princess was usually on the move and didn't get time to sit and listen to music, but she had sat and listened to her parents sing together once. She tucked the records under her arm before she closed her door behind her, running off towards the Solarium where she was needing to get ready for Stephanie.

She had arrived and the phonograph was already there. She smiled happily seeing it in the spot she wanted it in. She set one of the discs on the bench while she put the other one on and fiddled with it, getting a hand from the servant who stood by knowing how she was. As she heard the music start, she looked around to make sure it was in fact, just the two of them. After reassurance from the woman with her she allowed herself to begin to hum along with the music, her eyes lighting up slightly as she did. She walked up to a small group of flowers, running her hand underneath a large leaf as she took a chance and began to sing along with it.

" My dearest one, my darling dear,
                                        Your mighty words astound me
But I've no need of mighty deeds
When I feel your arms around me!"

She was not paying attention to her surroundings as she continued singing to herself, the image of her mother singing along making her smile as she kept going. She hoped to find someone she would be able to do the same with, but who knew? She would have to take her time and make sure it was someone that would be good to her like her parents had been for each other. Lost in her thoughts she didn't hear Stephanie announcing himself, and the servant cleared her throat. " Lady Alosa, company." her voice was soft but enough to snap the princess out of her focus as she snapped her mouth closed and flashed the other a grateful smile, but she was sure that they likely heard her already, although she chose to hope that they didn't. Even if they did... nothing would have happened, at the very least. She stepped out from around the corner and smiled happily at Stephanie as the song slowed to an end and she stopped it from playing the last few words. " Stephanie! You made it!" she carefully took the disc off that was on there and tucked it away before she folded her hands behind her back. She was going to have the other woman remain with them to catch her if anything happened. She didn't know what Stephanie had brought for music but just in case. " I'm going to have, um, her stay here too, if that's okay!" an apologetic look from the princess prompted the other woman to smile. She then quietly introduced herself as Ciara and bowed slightly towards Stephanie and Humphry before she fell quiet and Alosa focused back on her new company, happy to find out what he liked for music as well, and to get to know him better.

When Stephanie arrived there was the soft sound of song and at first he thought only that Alosa must have started a record to playing in anticipation of his arrival. But then one of the singing voices abruptly dropped and he realized that must have been Alosa’s own. It was so brief that he had barely registered it before it was gone. Ah, if only he had arrived a little earlier… but then, he should not wish for such things. Alosa was cautious for a good reason. He still did not really know the extent of her powers or if he could defend against them; he should have been worried. But no harm had come to them, so he was not.

Alosa stepped around a corner and joined them then. She smiled at him, a sight he was pleased to experience through Humphrey’s eyes. ”Of course.” he responded with faint amusement. She had given him a time and a place; there was truly no excuse for him to be late. ”And I have brought along a record, as requested.” He lifted his offering with a small smile of his own.

Stephanie turned his head to where Alosa had indicated another woman that she wished to stay. The prince nodded politely toward the servant before facing Alosa once more. ”As you wish. After all, I intended for Humphrey to remain as well. A pleasure to officially meet you, Ciara. I am Stephanie, as you have surely heard.”

Was Ciara meant to be a chaperone? Perhaps. That was a good precaution; he would never overstep with Alosa, of course, but this way there would be a witness to attest as much. He was certain that Humphrey would have pleaded his case, of course, but as the man was in his employ that would render his testimony less believable to anyone inclined to disparage the prince.

Alosa's eyes lit up when he lifted the record and she placed her hands together in front of herself excitedly. She was looking forward to him coming and hearing what he considered his favorite song. She knew her tastes might vary quite a bit but that was all the fun in getting to know someone after all. Right? " Wonderful! I can't wait to hear music from where you are from!" she knew better than to ask, but it also proved to be a fun activity because she knew that each part of the kingdom had a different culture, and it was just honestly fun to listen to music!

When Stephanie nodded in agreement to Ciara staying, she looked back and smiled at the other woman. " I knew he'd agree!" the young woman leaned down in a soft curtsey towards Stephanie and smiled slightly back towards the princess. She had nodded her head but remained a quiet presence, and Alosa felt better knowing that if she started to get too comfortable, she'd have a voice of reason to tell her what she was doing. She had a feeling Stephanie was stronger than most of the people she'd historically used her powers on, but she also didn't know how strong they were in the end. So, she didn't want to take a chance and hurt him or break the trust that they had begun to form when stuck in history class. Alosa spun her head back around and smiled happily at Stephanie. " Since I suggested the music, why don't I go first? This is a song that my mother used to play for me all the time!" she turned to go back to the player, and she carefully slid the disc out, a couple spots looking a little worn from years of use. It still played perfectly well, and she had made sure that it was transported properly as to prevent further wear.

She put in on and set it to play before she looked back over to Stephanie. " I hope you like it." her tone was a little bit more genuine, almost... embarrassed? Not quite it, but she genuinely hoped that he liked it. She didn't share music tastes with many people and she didn't want to disappoint him either. As the song began to play she sat down on the bench nearby and looked closed her eyes as she almost didn't want to see his reaction right away, worried he wouldn't like it.

Music from where he was from… Had anyone else worded it that way, Stephanie would suspect that her only aim in inviting him was to determine his kingdom of origin. And perhaps that was at least part of the young lady’s motive, though the desire seemingly had pure motivations. She wanted to know him, much as he wanted to know her. Was that not the basis upon which friendships were built? So all he said in response was, ”I feel the same way.” It was always interesting to try different kinds of music now and then, even if he did always return to his favorites.

It seemed that his guess about Ciara acting as a chaperone was incorrect, at least in the sense that he had thought of it. She would remain in order to rein in Alosa if there was trouble; that was also good forethought. Her presence also fulfilled the role he had envisioned, even if that was not the intent; all in all, he was glad that Alosa had asked her to remain.

Alosa suggested that she play her record first and Stephanie nodded his assent with a smile. A song that Alosa’s mother used to play for her? Stephanie tried to remember if his mother had ever shared such a memory with him. Of course she listened to music for her own enjoyment and sometimes in his presence, but that was hardly the same thing. But the more he tried to remember a pleasant moment shared with his mother, the more he found himself thinking of Evelyn instead. She would tell him the funniest stories and he would laugh until his sides hurt. Stephanie’s expression softened and he smiled warmly at the memories that more than filled the space where others might remember the kindness of a mother.

As music began to fill the air once more, Stephanie closed his eyes to quietly absorb it. The song was quite unusual, at least to his ears, but no less pleasant for it. After a moment he opened his eyes and handed over his record to Humphrey before approaching the bench where Alosa sat. ”Perhaps I am wrong, but it would seem to me that this song ought to be danced to. Only I fear I would not know the proper steps.” he began before offering out his hand, despite knowing that she had closed her eyes. ”I would be much obliged if you would teach me.”

Alosa was glad that Stephanie wasn't offended by the way she said anything or how she acted, she wasn't a stranger to people thinking she was too childish or immature. There was a reason Ren was taking over the throne and not her. However much she worried about it she hoped it didn't show in her actions because she liked to have fun with people she cared for and wanted to know.

As the music started, she couldn't help but think back to her own mother and all the time that they spent at the beach, listening to someone play the song on their guitar. Of course, this was usually before her powers manifested so it could be anyone, but even after that they found a female who could do the same for her. It was one of the best times she shared with her, and her sister for that fact. She wasn't expecting much of a reaction early in the song but when she heard Stepanie talk, she opened her eyes. She blinked as he held his hand out to her, her eyes widening for a brief moment before she smiled widely. " Yes! It's common to dance to but not usually as a pair unless one is more intimate with the other." she chimed before softly placing her hand in his and standing back up. She thought for a moment before deciding to leave her boots on. " But I can certainly show you, I learned this from when I was a child." She glanced back to Ciara who restarted the record and Alosa closed her eyes as she stepped back slightly from Stephanie almost not wanting to let go of his hand but she said she'd show him. She kept her eyes closed as she began to dance and despite the blush creeping up her face, she made herself open them again before she smiled as she focused on what she was doing.

Towards the end she had turned to face him, reaching her hand out and taking his again. " But it doesn't really matter so long as you're expressive with your hands." she smiled sheepishly, her very un-princess like side beginning to show but she was being herself and that was what mattered, at least to herself. She was never held to the same standards that Ren was, and that allowed her to become a little more carefree than her older sister and it showed in moments like this. Where she would opt to learn a dance instead of how to rule the kingdom. Her hand had remined in his and she looked up at him almost hopeful that he didn't think of it as too unique compared to what he was used to although he had been the one to bring it up.

Stephanie was surprised to hear that it was uncommon to dance to such a song in pairs unless the pair were intimate. He well knew that dancing was a common courtship activity in Phronese, but many people still danced with others whom they were not courting. He had never courted anyone very seriously, but his mother would never have accepted that as an excuse to be a bore and a wallflower. And it was hardly scandalous with one hand holding his partner’s, the other just above her hip, and at least a hand’s breadth of space between them. Was it truly so different in Stillicidium?

Whatever the case, Alosa did put her hand in his and rise from the bench, agreeing to teach him the appropriate dance. Stephanie smiled but was inwardly surprised again when Alosa stepped away from him, releasing his hand. Ah, but perhaps that made sense… If it was not commonly performed as a paired dance, then it might be more comfortable for her to dance alone as a demonstration.

Stephanie was quite determined to learn the steps so that he could join in… until Alosa actually began to dance. Stephanie’s blind eyes widened and he was slightly disoriented as Humphrey quickly turned his head. Not that he could blame the man; the way Alosa’s hips swayed with the music would have been nothing less than scandalous at any Phronesian ball. And yet Stephanie did not shut out the image, now seen from Ciara’s perspective. Heaven knew that his normally pale features were red from his neck up to the roots of his hair, but he continued to watch.

Alosa reached for Stephanie’s hand, offering one last bit of advice about expression. The prince was stunned; would anyone even notice a lady’s hands of all things when she was performing such a dance? ”I am not entirely certain I even can move like that.” Stephanie admitted, standing stock still and far too embarrassed to try. He would surely only make a fool of himself.

”And men perform this dance as well? Truly?” Stephanie had performed many dances that were frankly more demanding on women than their male counterparts. The steps were more or less the same, but certain extra flourishes were performed by court ladies to draw the eye and appeal to potential suitors. A turn of the skirt, a flicker of the fan; nothing quite as… energetic as Alosa’s gyrating, of course, but perhaps it held a similar purpose?

Or perhaps the men of Stillicidium were also far less reserved than their Phronesian counterparts.

Alosa was really hopeful that she wouldn't push him away, even though she knew the manner of which one was meant to dance to the music wasn't quite the standard ballroom style. In fact, far from. She had learned from her mother from a young age and as she began to move, she couldn't help but feel a bit of heat creep up her own cheeks, she'd never done this for anyone else. She wasn't even sure Remi had seen it, because usually she danced on her own. So, when she turned back to face Stephanie she blinked, seeing how red his own face was, and she laughed sheepishly. At least he hadn't looked away, but she felt her heart racing from the fact that he did not. She wasn't sure if it was just him being polite or if he was trying to learn but she was flattered all the same, even if it was due to his manners that he seemed to focus on.

When he did reply she tilted her head and laughed under her breath softly. She shook her head. " Oh, no not at all! I haven't seen much of the men's movement in this kind of dance; however, mother has told me that while it's just as expressive it's a lot more..." she paused, her feet pausing in movement. "I think she used the word boxy but I'm not sure exactly what that means." she was surprised with how comfortable she was being so honest with him, but it was a nice feeling that he didn't push her away after everything she had done. She smiled up at him before falling back into a little livelier stepping motion that was similar to slow dancing but not quite. She looked up at Stephanie again and gave him a gentle tug to get him moving, but she wasn't by any means about to ask him to do what she just did. She could hear the song coming to an end, but she couldn't help but want to take his other hand and watch him curiously. " I take it dancing isn't quite as expressive where you're from?" she questioned, but without any thought of trying to figure out where he was sent here from. She was genuinely enjoying her time with him and didn't want to mess it up by asking questions she shouldn't.

As the record skipped to the next song, very similar in tone but definitely different, she looked over and pouted slightly. She had been enjoying that very much! She looked up at Stephanie again as Ciara lifted the needle from the disk and Alosa slowly but hesitantly allowed the man to release her hands if he so chose to. " Now your turn! I can't wait to hear what you've brought." she was excited, this was an adventure in itself getting to know what he enjoyed even if it was something as simple as what kind of music he listened to. Especially considering if she had to even begin to venture a guess she probably would be way off.

Stephanie was determined to learn this dance, even if the embarrassment killed him. He tried to tell himself that it was no different from practicing similar dances with his sister Aleithia. She had to chastise him more than once for being far too stiff and timid when trying styles from different kingdoms. He could almost hear her voice in his ear, asking him just what the nobility would think in Stillicidium if they could not perform the proper steps?

However Alosa was not his sister. The small similarities that made her company more pleasant notwithstanding, she was a young lady that he was not at all related to. At least they were properly chaperoned, but it still felt strange to practice such a scandalous dance. No, he must not think of it that way; clearly it was not considered scandalous in Stilicidium. Aleithia was right; he was embarrassing himself more by playing the wallflower.

Alosa gently tugged his hand to unstick him from his spot and Stephanie decided that it was now or never. It was a little funny that he was less reluctant to walk blindly into danger with Alosa than he was to dance with her. But dance he did, dredging up fond memories of his sister pushing him to be more open and willing to experiment. ”Less expressive is not the phrase I would use, exactly.” The prince commented as he relaxed into the steps. It was certainly not that he was not capable; his body was strong and flexible as he could not have accepted less from himself. ”However, expression where I am from is decidedly more subtle. A lady is more likely to entice the eye with a flash of her fan or her ankle than the swing of her hips.”

There was no denying that the sway of hips was an effective way to draw the eye, so to speak. But that was not why he was here and it was no fun for Alosa if she was the only one getting into it. Stephanie decided to take it a step further, laughing a bit abashedly as he experimentally shook his hips to the music. There were only the four of them there. He trusted Humphrey not to speak of this and Alosa, well… it was worth a little embarrassment to foster their friendship. As for Ciara, he would take his chances. But the moment was brief; he just felt far too silly.

All for the better that the song had come to an end. Stephanie was enjoying himself, but it was still a bit embarrassing. ”Ah, yes! I am afraid the record I have brought may not be to your taste, but in the spirit of sharing…” Stephanie turned to Humphrey with a nod and the man bowed slightly in response before moving to the record player.

The prince kept Alosa’s hand in his and guided the other to his shoulder. Then his free hand settled just above her hip and he smiled at her. ”I will admit, I usually listen to this alone and I do not dance outside of social events. But it only seems fitting that I share my style of dance with you in return. Please, follow my lead.”

The song started off slowly which Stephanie was glad for just in case Alosa would need the time to adjust. The very least that he could do was to show her the same patience that she had shown him. There were livelier bits as well, so hopefully she would not become bored. But he did have one concern. ”It is admittedly a rather long song. Often something like this would be played at a grand party where couples might step up to dance for a time before switching partners or retiring from the floor. We may stop whenever you wish, of course.”

Alosa felt a smile growing on her face as he attempted to keep up and she was grateful she brought a slower playing song along with her. His explanation about her misunderstanding was met with nothing but patience and understanding, something she greatly appreciated. She knew she wasn't always accurate with her words and understanding of things, in particular things that had to do with other kingdoms. She was making a conscious effort to do better because she knew that she wouldn't always be able to remain at home and free as she had been. She hummed softly to herself thinking about his words before she could hear the end coming up and his few brief moments of putting his all in made her eyes light up. He was trying so hard despite clearly being embarrassed and it made her happier than she thought it would. His laugh made her heart skip briefly as she found herself looking up at him in surprise, but she never lost her smile. " Is that so? I'm not surprised, at least my mother maintained her carefree spirit even once becoming royal. I'm sure not everyone from home is as easy-going as I am." although she couldn't speak for the duchies of her kingdom, Remi was a bit more of that outgoing type. She couldn't wait to see him when he finally got here, she was going to give him the biggest hug! " I'm sure there are other people from home who are less like I am. Subtly has never been my thing, that was always my older sister." she didn't allow herself to get upset over the thought of Calypso, especially not when she was having so much fun with Stephanie in the moment.

When he nodded back to Humphry she paused and caught her breath as she hadn't done that type of dancing for a while, not when she had been so busy at the school. She didn't miss the fact that he kept her hand in his, although when he raised her other hand up and rested it on his shoulder she breathed in softly as she looked up at him. This reminded her very much of the formal dancing that they did in Stillcidlium, at least with the hand placements. She was trying not to think too hard about his hand resting just above her hip and after she returned his smile she was forced to look down and make sure she didn't find herself stepping on his feet.

Dancing was one of the things that came easily to her, thankfully, so she wasn't too worried. The steps weren't exact to what she was used to, but she matched her movements up with his and she nearly missed his words about how long the song was and she lifted her head back up. " Huh? Oh, it's one of those formal songs then." she smiled up at him and readjusted her hand on his shoulder, her fingers tightening briefly as she almost stepped on his foot, but she pulled herself together and relaxed her arm so that it rested against him slightly at the same time to make it more comfortable. " And don't worry about it, any sort of music is better than absolute silence, at least to me." that or the sounds of waves crashing on the shore, birds singing in the trees and sometimes even the sea lions talking to their friends. She could feel her heart still beating hard in her chest but admittedly for a different reason than before when she was moving faster. She hadn't been this close to someone in a dance for quite some time, not that she minded the feeling.

”A carefree spirit that she clearly passed on to her daughter.” Stephanie replied with a small smile. Apparently it was not common among the aristocracy of her home either, which was perhaps for the best. Stephanie did not know that he could handle an entire ballroom full of Alosas. However, just the one Alosa was quite pleasant and a refreshing departure from what he was accustomed to. It was something that he could very much enjoy in these small doses and he idly wondered if that was what had drawn Alosa’s father to her mother to begin with. But that was truly conjecture; it was just as likely to have been a political arrangement if not more likely.

So Alosa’s older sister was the more reserved one. The thought amused Stephanie a little as he thought of his own older sister and how very different they were. Evelyn could be said to be reserved in some ways, but it was far different from his own demeanor. And in truth, he thought it a poor reflection of the woman that his sister truly was. Even now, in his mind, she was still larger than life and a true dragon slayer. Perhaps she would like Alosa as well; they were both such free spirits when they were allowed to be. But what was he thinking? He did not even know Alosa well and he wanted to introduce her to both of his sisters? Yes. Yes, he did.

”My younger sister Aleithia is more reserved, like myself. We share much in common, though sometimes I think she is more intelligent even than I am. My older sister Evelyn is something of a wildcard and I mean that in the best way. She has an indomitable spirit. It does not always show as much as it used to.” Stephanie left it at that, unwilling to give away any of his sisters’ secrets. Some things were not his to tell.

Fortunately it would seem that the sort of stiff, formal dancing that Stephanie was accustomed to was not entirely unfamiliar to Alosa. She did seem a little nervous, but there was surely no need to be. They were simply sharing a moment between friends; despite the style of dance the setting was far from formal. He was having a good time and he very much hoped that Alosa would as well.

”Hmn. I would mostly agree, though sometimes I do enjoy a few moments of silence. They are quite rare and precious.” To experience true silence took a surprising amount of effort for the telepath. It was not just a matter of shuttering the windows and playing no music; he had to limit the reach of his own mind and shut out the unintentionally intrusive thoughts of others for some distance around him. Sometimes it was impossible and he played music just to help drown out the rest.

”Please do not look down. You need not worry if you misstep; I promise my toes are quite resilient enough if you do.” Stephanie smiled warmly as his blind eyes faced Alosa directly. ”I would much rather you relax and simply enjoy the moment. There is no one here to impress; let us enjoy ourselves to the fullest without concern.”

Pink eyes widened briefly before she flushed red and looked up at Stephanie again. She hoped that he couldn't hear how hard her heart was beating but surely, he could with how close she actually was to him. He knew that about her from the little time they spent together and still wanted to be around her. It took her a moment but her face broke out in a happy smile as she nodded her head. " Mhmm!" she shifted her hand slightly that was on his shoulder as she listened to him speaking about his sister's a few moments later. She breathed out and as he finished up, she laughed softly under her breath. That sounded like a very familiar story to her, in a strange way. " You sound like you love them both very much. Siblings tend to be that way, similar in some ways while different in others." she tried to keep from stepping on his toes while she spoke and she shifted her gaze from his face to where her eyes naturally landed, which was along his collarbone and shoulders. " My sister, she passed quite a few years ago now. I still miss her every day, and I still have my brother, Remi. He's kind of outgoing like I am. We used to be each other's shadows." she paused and closed her eyes as she tried to focus on both the movements of the dance even though slower. " We also have a new half-sibling that we met when we came here, Luka. He's a bit more on the serious side but I know he has a good heart and cares for us." she didn't want to give too much away, but she felt it only fair to share her own family like Stephanie had. She appreciated his company and patience with her, after all.

Silence was something Alosa didn't particularly like, but her own reasons were actually kind of dark. Her eyes opened and before she looked up at him there was a flash of pain in them that she covered up quickly, although she still felt the painful clench in her chest. " Maybe one day I'll get back there." she murmured quietly, almost in a whisper. In those silent moments she could still picture the quiet when she had found her sister, before she was pulled away. Shaking her head though she looked up at Stephanie again, smiling slightly. " Calypso would want me to be able to enjoy silence again, I think." it had been a while since she'd uttered her elder sister's name out loud, and while it made her chest hurt slightly, she knew she'd be okay. Something about her hand being in Stephanie's was comforting even if they were dancing as just friends. Her eyes shifted down again, keeping an eye on her steps to make sure she remembered everything her mother taught her.

He took her by surprise when he called her on looking down at her steps. She looked right back up at him and blinked in surprise. This was only moments before her face went red with a blush, and she knew her hand tightened in his. " Yeah, you're right..." she said softly, she couldn't explain this feeling that she had, but she liked it, and she wanted it to continue. " Thank you." she murmured before she acted on instinct and her hand up on his shoulder slid down a little, as she closed the distance between them and leaned her forehead against his shoulder. She smiled to herself, at the moment not even caring that he could clearly feel her heart pounding in her chest, but she relaxed into the steps of the dance a little more too, the motions coming more naturally the longer she did it. She couldn't help herself, she just hoped he didn't mind and wouldn't push her away. He was warm and she was embarrassed, but she was happy in the moment as well.

Sometimes Stephanie lamented that he could not see for himself; everything he experienced second hand was somewhat distorted and had to be pieced together from perspectives different from his own. But sometimes he thought he was more fortunate than most in that he could experience the warmth of a lady’s smile much more deeply than he could have with functioning eyes. He didn’t just feel her heartbeat, he could practically hear it sing with happiness. He would not have expected such a reaction to something as simple as his accepting her free spirit, but he was glad for it.

”I do love them, more than anything.” Stephanie agreed readily. It was no secret to anyone who knew him well at all and Alosa was sure to see for herself as their friendship grew. There was little in life that he truly cherished besides them. He held a duty to his people, he cared for their welfare, but at the end of the day they were still a faceless mass of expectation. His sisters were different; they were individual people, faces that stood apart from the crowd, with feelings, hopes, and dreams that mattered to him more than even his own. That was more than he intended to say aloud, of course, but that did not make it any less true.

Stephanie did not even like to imagine losing either of them. When he had thought Evelyn might be lost to them, it crushed him. It changed him. Even after she had begun to recover, the realization that she could have passed and it would have been his fault had wrecked him entirely. Knowing that, his heart went out to Alosa who had lost her elder sister. How much harder it must have been for her when her sister was one of the only people with whom she had been willing to sing freely.

At least she was not alone, though Stephanie knew the loss was still very painful. He hoped that Alosa was wiser than he had been and leaned on her brothers in the way he had not allowed himself to lean on Aleithia.

”Luka was the one who found you during our history class war reenactment, was he not?” Stephanie was unable to see the man, of course, but he could remember the relief and happiness in Alosa’s tone when she laid eyes on her brother. He strongly remembered insisting that she go to him; how could he do otherwise as a brother who was also worried about his sisters? Even Evelyn, who would probably bring her fists to a swordfight and still win. ”Perhaps I will meet them properly someday.”

On the flip side of experiencing a lady’s smile as few others could, Stephanie also experienced the depths of Alosa’s sadness with her. There was a reason that Alosa could not bear the silence, one that Stephanie more than understood. He could not even apologize for his faux pas as he was not meant to know about it. He could only say, ”Just take things at your own pace, Alosa. There is nothing wrong with taking the time you need.”

Stephanie couldn’t take away that pain of Alosa’s loss, he dared not even think that he could distract from it, but he could give her something else to focus on in the moment. Not her feet, but this moment, this music and dance that they shared. He was surprised when her forehead rested on his shoulder, but he said nothing of it. And as neither of their chaperones deigned to object, he saw no harm in it. ”Much better.”[/a] he murmured softly as they continued to dance.
