"Ryo" "Bubby" Sins, scandal, betrayal; Ryo could already imagine the stories the spirits were spinning as they dashed over to tell on him to his brother. He wished he could see them so he could tell them to collect themselves before they blew up his life, but Ryo was doing a fine job of that by himself without the assistance of anyone else. It was shameful to blame the spirits for his thoughts and transgressions.
Given her reaction, Izzie was grateful Ryo hadn’t progressed the moment any further either. She truly believed he was just trying to better understand the story. Such lies. " Wonder what else she will believe?" Bubby’s voice appeared much to Ryo’s embarrassment. The puppet was acting as the devil on his shoulder, egging him on to progress the action even further. Ryo “shh” ed the puppet in the hopes it would quiet down, knowing full well it was just expressing the curiosities of his heart.
The reassurance she provided was enough for Ryo to stay put for the time being, despite his wanting to flee and never look back. Being around Izzie was proving to be dangerous for him, and if he left his seat again, he wasn’t sure that his hands would remain to themselves. The strangest part was that the lady didn’t seem to mind. Maybe it was just the fact that she was so captivated by the story that she wanted to be a part of it herself, or could it be possible that her heart was also racing at the same pace as his?
Did any of that matter if he was engaged?
It did not. Ryo’s thoughts and actions needed to remain platonic for the remainder of the two’s conversation unless he wanted to risk losing her as a friend permanently. " Best we return to the reading, then, shall we?" He offered the book up sheepishly, not giving her much of a chance to reply before diving into the book once again. As Lady Demonstra spoke more to her lingering feelings for the monster, Ryo wondered if it was possible that someone would have those feelings about him one day.
Focusing more on the book allowed the redness in his face to calm as he focused more on reading the words than pondering their meaning until landing on the next scene between the two main characters. The creature had snuck into the woman’s chambers to watch her sleep in the night and protect her. Lady Demonstra had awoken and was understandably freaked out by the interaction, but after the man’s explanation, she found herself charmed by him, leaving Ryo even more confused than ever.
Pausing his reading, he looked at the doe-eyed red head beside him and then at Bubby, " Just making sure I understand what this is saying. He watched her sleep, and that made her want him more?" He asked, truly trying to understand what the message was behind this scene. " If someone watched me while I slept, I would slap them." Bubby remarked, causing Ryo to chuckle at his joke before looking at Izzie for reassurance.
" What do you think, my lady? Would you want me to watch you sleep at night?" Wait. That hadn’t come out right. The hole he had done such a wonderful job climbing out of, only for him to immediately dive right back into, and he wasn’t sure if he could climb out a second time. Knowing Bubby would just make the matter worse, Ryo did his best to diffuse the situation himself, " I mean, I meant that if I was the monster, if you were Lady Demonstra." That wasn’t right. " To clarify, I do not want to watch you sleep. I was just trying to- well, I’m not sure." He admitted as his face got redder by the minute.

Bubby's voice pulled her focus from Ryo and had her arching a brow slightly in question. She knew the puppet spoke the things that were sometimes off the wall, but what had he meant by that? Was she being too naive? Was there more to all of this than just Ryo wanting to know about her story? Dark eyes looked between the two for a moment, not sure if she wanted to know what was passing between them. Would it change the way things were? Probably. Was it worth ignoring so she could listen to him read some more? Now that, she wasn't sure of. But, Izzie didn't question it. She simply remained as she was and waited for him to decide what happened next.
Ryo's suggestion that they get back to the book earned him a soft smile and a nod. Iz tucked her legs back up under her skirts and returned to her previous position, facing him with her cheek on the cushion that had been at her back. The tone of his voice, the ease in which he spoke, pulled her back into the story almost instantly. Had she not already known him to be a royal, she could have easily assumed him to be a minstrel of some kind. Perhaps he had some Musique in his blood somewhere, his words having captivated her all over again that she forgot what had transpired. That she had, for one brief moment, wondered what it would be like to have him kiss her.
When the story was paused for a second time, she had to force her mind back into reality and not the moment between the characters. His question had her nodding, while Bubby's voice pulled a laugh of her own from her lips. Yes, she could see how the pair of them would misunderstand Lady Demonstra's view on being watched. They didn't dream of being the sleeping beauty, awoken by their true love once upon a time. For her, the idea of it all was a level beyond anything she could ever imagine happening. And secretly, she wanted nothing more than to experience it at some point in her life. Of course, she didn't say this. She didn't want to make him more uncomfortable than he'd already been.
"I think it would have to depend on the person. The tie you had with them, you know? A stranger watching me in my sleep would probably frighten me and, like you said Bubby, I'd most likely want to slap them." Though she had said the words to him, the wish still fluttering in her stomach like butterflies gone mad. His next question only added to it, the sensation going haywire to have her own features tinting rose for the umpteenth time since he'd joined her. Even his attempt to fix things didn't change the feeling, though it did have her giggling softly as she reached out to set her hand on his where he held the book.
"I know what you meant, Ryo. Try not to worry yourself over my misunderstanding, okay? This is supposed to be fun, after all." Izzie hoped her words were enough to help calm his mind, and ramblings. While she found the whole thing to be rather adorable, he probably didn't. So, she just smiled and tried her best to answer the question as he had intended it.
"As for my thoughts on having someone I like watching me sleep...I think I'd enjoy it. Knowing that they cared enough to protect me at night, to be able to have such a vulnerable moment without a care in the world...It sounds amazing." Her tone took on a wistful quality as she imagined such a thing, the hopeless romantic within her showing its face without her realizing it. "The level of trust one would have to have, the feelings one would need in order to desire someone like that..." Izzie shook her head, not knowing how to finish the sentence without giving herself away completely. It was in that moment that she realized she was still touching him, her hand immediately retreating back to her own lap as she gave him an apologetic smile.
"My apologies, Ryo. I seem to have lost myself there for a moment. You see why I tend to read these books by my lonesome." She chuckled nervously before dropping her eyes to look at anything else. Anything that wasn't his flushed features and fascinating eyes.

"Ryo" "Bubby" Despite the large foot in his mouth, Ryo couldn’t help but await Izzie’s response to his massive mistake. He dreaded the idea she might slap him for his inability to speak properly. The more he thought about it, the less turned off by it he was. He remembered how his mother used to watch him and his sister at night, and it was sort of comforting to know there was someone making sure he was safe. Maybe Lady Demonstra craved the same sense of security, even if it was from a monster.
Chuckling at her initial thoughts, he looked at the wooden pal, expecting a wise retort from him. There was the lingering temptation of commenting on them no longer being strangers, but that voice sounded eerily familiar to his brothers, and Ryo felt it best to avoid it. Any means of restraint were needed if he wanted to make it through the rest of this book, but it was worth it to get to see the flustered, adorable look on her face when it came to the more private, intimate moments between the characters. The idea of escaping into the book was more welcoming than Ryo was willing to admit.
Her attempts at reassuring him were meaningless, knowing that most of this meeting was by chance and was rare to happen again. That only meant he had to make the most of their interaction now. " Of course, my apologies for stopping the story for such idle chit chat. I'm just curious about the inner workings of Lady Demonstra’s mind. I wish they would delve deeper into her feelings and relationships that led her to these moments." Of course, there were moments of her past that flashed throughout the book, but not enough to explain her willingness to engage with a monster.
" Maybe she doesn’t need a clear reason." He attempted to reason with himself before allowing Izzie to speak once more. She had taken the thoughts from his mind before he was able to even formulate them into sentences. " Well put, Lady Izzie," he smiled at her reassuringly before realizing where her hand was placed. How long had it been there? Why had it taken him this long to notice? His heart raced at the idea she was somehow humoring his conversations. The idea that he was the monster and she was Lady Demonstra. That’s what it had to be.
Before he could comment on it or return the gesture, she quickly pulled her hand back to her lap. A relieved sigh escaped his lips as the lady gave an apology, not that it was needed. Ryo had invited her kindness was taking advice on the situation. He was the one who was engaged, the one needing to apologize. " No, please don’t apologize. It was, it was nice." There were better words to explain it. The spark. But he didn’t want to scare off one of the only friends he had made at Utopia. Despite what his brother said, he was not trying to betray anyone, even if they didn’t have the same intention.
The problem now was that she wasn’t looking at him any longer. He wanted her to be looking at him again, pretending he was the only one in the room. Even if his thoughts betrayed him, he couldn’t help but have them. The idea of Izzie sitting alone in her room reading books like this was enough to make him- excited. The tension on his zipper was an unexpected surprise, one he had no intention of quelling in the woman’s presence. He needed to escape before he made a bigger fool of himself.
Placing the book in front of him, he stood up. " I- uh- need to go. I apologize, Lady Izzie. It’s been- um- a pleasure." The sweat drops started flowing down his face as he looked at the woman’s gown and started to imagine how it would look off of her. The wooden puppet hopped off the chair and nodded at the redhead before walking away. Using the book as cover, Ryo did a quick bow as well before following Bubby out the library doors, praying Izzie was none the wiser to his sinful thoughts.

â€No need to apologize, Ryo. I…like the way you want to take apart the bits of the book you don’t understand. It shows more about how your mind works over the impulses of the rest of you.†And it gave her more time to actually talk to the fascinating man. If she could get through this book, would that mean they could read another? It didn’t even have to be one of her smutty ones if he didn’t want them to be. All Izzie wanted was to sit beside him and listen to him talk, a realization that had her ears heating up and her stomach tying itself into knots. She was in trouble.
The compliment he gave her brought a bright smile to her lips. He was actually appreciating her thoughts on the book. Something she never knew she wanted to hear from anyone in her life. All she’d ever known was that it wasn’t ladylike to read such things, or that she was a silly girl to dream about such happily ever afters. It was like a breath of fresh air in the dark cave of her hidden love. Iz wrapped herself in it and moved to get more comfortable in her seat, more than happy to remain silent and listen to him read some more. Whatever he wanted, so long as he stayed there and hung out with her.
At his next words, she felt the heat begin to return to her cheeks. He…he thought it had been nice? He didn’t mind that she had touched him? Was it wrong to get a kick out of such a thing? Most likely, but Izzie couldn’t bring herself to not smile. With him, she didn’t feel like she was just a pawn. A piece of a puzzle meant to make life for him better. Or the pet to someone far better than she was. No, with Ryo she was just….Izzie. A simple girl who read smutty books. It was…delightful. She opened her mouth to thank him, but found the words cut off at his sudden movements. Her eyes widened a bit in surprise, her body shifting to sit up as she watched him.
â€Oh, you do? I mean, you don’t have to if you..†The words trailed off as he fled, her mood deflating as he and Bubby took off as if they were on fire. Had she read things wrong? Had he merely been entertaining the idea of being her friend? Had she said something wrong? It had to have been her fault. He had taken her book with him, so that couldn’t have been the problem. She was the culprit. The thought made so much sense and had her clasping her hands together in her lap. Her eyes closed, fighting back the tears she could feel burning in the back of her throat.
â€Serves me right for thinking I could be more than what I am…†She whispered the words to herself before pushing herself to her feet. With one final look to what had been, Izzie turned away from her little hideaway and headed for the silent solitude of her dorm.
