The horrible thing about your destiny, as Elaine was learning, was that it would thrust itself upon you against your best efforts to the contrary.

Two years in Destiny City (a name she was coming to despise) had left Elaine blissfully free of harassment from any Big Nasties. She had become cocky about it, before all the horrible Bullshit had caught up to her. And now, of course - now that she was stubbornly attempting to avoid thinking about any of it - she was wondering if being steeped in Magical Bullshit had a sort of magnetism effect and made one attract more of it, like Cheerios in a bowl of rotten milk bumping inexorably into one another and forming clumps.

At some point she had stopped beckoning to the dog that was following her, hanging back just far enough that it could not be clearly seen. It had been at approximately that moment that she had gained the uneasy suspicion that it was not, in fact, a dog. That had been four blocks back, and she was moving more briskly now, with the upsetting awareness that the shape following her was moving more briskly at well. And when she removed her heels and broke into a trot, the sound of its paws (or feet, or whatever it might have) breaking out into a run in turn pushed her to desperation. She veered off the sidewalk and into the dark between two buildings.

If she was going to run, she might as well run fast, and have some Plan B to boot. Driven by some instinct she reached for whatever part of her had so recently been revealed to her, and the foot that had risen up in stockings landed in a sandal as her trot became a full on sprint.

She did not scream, but probably she did not need to for any given onlooker to observe that she was very bravely running hell for leather away from the youma on her heels, which she had not even turned to look at. Any if that onlooker had any intimate knowledge of the streets here, they would also perceive that she was very bravely running headlong into cornering herself.

feel free to do whatever with it, i left it vague lol

It was not, in fact, a dog.

Encke had seen all sorts of varieties of youma in their fifteen years of dealing with them--including, naturally, themself. They had clocked the youma about a block back in their normal patrols, and it came to them at that moment they would have to do something about it.

Well. Maybe it was the cat on his shoulder instead.

"Encke!!" hissed Viatrix, huddling closer to his ear. "That thing is a mockery of the dog species. Kill it!"

"Kill-- You know it'll just come back-"

"Yeah, or maybe it'll stay in the Negaspace forever and also didn't you notice the knight don't doddle you know better than-"

Saying that there was a knight at risk, too, caused Encke to shut Viatrix up perhaps rather dramatically by leaping to the next building--as she dug her claws into his shoulder much deeper than he would have preferred, but pain was something he regularly brought on himself--to get a better angle on what was below. If she kept running in that direction- ah, s**t. He could see just by looking ahead that if she kept going that way she was going to be stuck.

With the not dog.

Encke counted out the number of buildings he would need to clear to properly catch up at their speeds compared to Encke's own and cleared that before jumping down behind the not-dog. Viatrix, of course, had the smarts to get off his shoulder and scurry around the dog toward the knight while he tried to get the youma's attention.

On one hand, perhaps Encke just showing up out of nowhere would do more work to scare the new knight than the dog was doing. On the other hand, Encke's primary priority was making sure everyone lived through this. In interest of that, Encke focused on the dog with the intention of magically making it have a very bad day.

Anyway, Viatrix might've just made a fear instinct worse by dashing to keep up with the knight and shouting, as a cat, "Girl watch out!!"

Quote:
Sailor Scout Attack: "Ionization!"
Encke points his left pointer finger forward at his adversary. Suddenly, the air around the adversary sounds like it is crackling, and before long, small purple-blue sparks begin to hit their body, causing the sensation of small shocks all over them. Effectively, the air around them has become conductive and ionized, like plasmas. Players can also choose to keep lasting damage after the duration ends, such as soreness or residual shocks.
(Uses: Thrice per battle.
Duration: 30 seconds
Range: 10ft radius around the target. This attack will hit other adversaries in the radius, but not allies.)

if you give elaine about two seconds she can actually be mildly useful for a moment, which i think would make her feel better about the whole thing lmao

"I'm already watching out, girl!" was Joy's panicked answer, spilling out of her in the impulse of the moment. It took a second more to catch up to her that the girl in question was a cat - that she had just been yelled at by a talking cat - and rumors and tall tales notwithstanding, nor even vague allusions in Gouvernail's infodump, Elaine had been prepared for a lot of things, but a cat not only speaking but calling her "girl" ended up being just enough too weird to be bearable.

She did a double take. This is generally an inadvisable maneuver while running in a full sprint, and yielded the expected result of her sprawling on the pavement amid drifts of dirty snow and wet trash. Scrambling to at least get onto her a** and not her face, she held up a length of red ribbon at the cat, shaking it demonstratively between her hands as if she was about to strangle someone with it in irritation.

"What do I do?" she demanded, although in a tone that suggested that this was more an indignant complaint against the universe for arming her with a string than an actual request for help.

If Viatrix's kitty expression could have twisted into a wince as she watched the knight stop, thankfully, before she rammed herself into a corner, and ... instead fall on the ground, it would have.

As it was, Viatrix's kitty expression probably got as close as it could to a wince, considering the way she pulled her head back. "Ah, sorry, just didn't want you to crash!" As the ... Earth? page gathered herself up, Viatrix trotted around her. Did she look really injured? If she was she knew she could get Encke over there-

Ah, she was up! And waving a ribbon around. Why-

Oh! She would ask if that was really all she had, but her bonded's husband had awoken with a feather, so Viatrix already knew the answer to that one.

"I mean," she glanced beyond the Earth page toward the fight that her bonded and the not dog were currently in, "could try strangling the dog with that ribbon. Or wrapping it up somehow. I just have a forehead beam. And danger claws." Viatrix's brows lowered. She didn't really want to try and jump on the dog, but she could...

"Don't know how much you know about fighting though."

Viatrix would like the newbie to feel mildly useful!!

sadly this is literally all she can do, but she can quote King of the Hill, and that's not entirely useless, right?

"Do you know who Bobby Hill is?" asked the knight, laughing in a somewhat concerningly hysterical way, scrabbling among the fox tails belted to her shoulder and extracting a silver chain as she clumsily rose to her feet and - in a move that would later astonish her when she remembered it - actually flung herself back in the direction she'd come, back towards Encke and the youma. "That's my purse! I don't know you!"

She lifted the whistle to her lips, propelled largely by instinct and by a regret that she had not paid more careful attention to that sonorous old a*****e on her Wonder as to specifics. To Encke and Viatrix, there was no sound - but Encke would receive the momentary assistance of the youma shaking its head, clawing at its ears in disgust, attention diverted from attacking.

Viatrix considered interrupting everything to ask her bonded, loudly, what the hell King of the Hill was. She, in fact, opened her mouth to do it, but she opted against it, replacing all those thoughts with the helpful, "Maybe!" followed up by, "Look, anything is better than nothing!!"

A distraction was a lot better than just anything, though.

Encke's eyes lit up at realizing he wouldn't have to fend off this dog while trying to perhaps dust it with magic. A distraction would make it a lot harder for the not dog to notice the way the air heated up again, perhaps worse, perhaps with more of a force. While they avoided using their eternal, their super attack should hopefully do the trick-

"Ooh, electric fire and brimstone!! Git'em Encke!"

Encke sighed deeply.

Quote:
Super Sailor Scout Attack: "Full Ionization!"
The closer a plasma gets to becoming fully ionized, the hotter the plasma becomes. Encke points his left pointer finger at his adversary. As before, the air around their adversary begins to superheat and supercharge. This ionized 'air' is hot, and along with the shocks, characters now may feel as the air is burning them. When the duration ends, players can choose to keep lasting damage, such as soreness, residual shocks, damaging burns, and scarring, up to their discretion.
(Uses: Twice per battle.
Duration: 30 seconds
Range: 10ft radius around target. This attack will hit other adversaries in the radius, but not allies.)

Look Viatrix thinks this is a win, this qualifies as mildly useful okay-

The knight gathered up her skirts in one hand, apparently prepared to bravely run away and leave the more capable pair to it. But Encke's second attack spared her the need to.

After the crowded activity of running, falling, yelling, and some sort of palpable magic, the silence that fell when the youma did felt eerie to Joy, at least, who was unused to such things. She dropped the whistle, letting it swing back, and stood in a sort of slack jawed stupidity for a moment.

She then collected herself, closing her eyes and holding up a "just a moment" finger.

"Can you sign a little piece of paper," she said with flippant aggression - hostility even - that was at least clearly not directed at either of them, and instead at some unknown third party, "that says that I was not completely useless? I feel sick," she added, a calm announcement which might have been a figure of speech, as she didn't look or sound ill. The knight, delivered from her predicament, radiated the Aura of Unprepared Newbie.

Encke let out a small sigh, their body physically slacking. Good. Page rescued. Page ... also looking stunned. Understandable. She must've been really new, then. Viatrix was giving him a lowered brow that he figured was a no s**t Sherlock look, but it wasn't like she could read his thoughts...

The way she held up her finger caught his attention, but the way she followed that up drew a snort.

Fair enough.

"I mean," Encke affected the best tone he could of a somewhat lenient boss, "I can put in my statement of support, if you need it."

Viatrix giggled at Encke, before happily chirping to the Earth Knight, "You did fine!! You're new to this and," she glanced at the ribbon, "seems like you weren't well equipped, but you thought of something, right? Better than what Encke's husband had..."

"Hey," Encke ran a hand over his hair, "that feather at least did something." ... Did it, or was it mostly Basiluzzo's natural athleticism that carried him through? And he did nearly lose his life once-

The stranger looked at them with a sudden sensation of wilting, making a helpless gesture with their ribbon.

"I could probably do more with a feather," she said. "Anyway, I--" she hesitated, and it occurred to her that she was not exactly on her best manners. But honestly, she had sort of hoped, in the event of a worst case scenario, for more of an armor situation - something a little more bearded - an expression of gratitude possibly even of the Clinch Cover variety - and had not exactly mentally prepared herself for this outcome instead. The word "husband" had her doubly dismantling flirtation and scanning ahead for simple politeness instead.

"Thank you," she said at last, somewhat stupidly. She abruptly pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes in evident exhaustion. "I mean it. I don't know what I woulda done. Really - really cool. I have never talked to a cat before. I mean, not one that talked back. I think I - I need one of you guys." She pointed vaguely to the signet ring on her finger. "He told me this would happen, that b*****d French ********," she added, again with a mystifying lack of clarity.

Forgive her her scatterbrains, ladies and gentlemen. She didn't ask for any of this.
PostPosted: Wed Jan 22, 2025 6:12 am

"That b*****d French ********?" asked Encke, and it wasn't out of offense or curiosity rather than almost a question to himself. Did he know any French people in this s**t? He assuredly did, somewhere, but the question was did he know them enough to put the pieces together. "Ah-- sorry. Know a lot of people. It's alright, really. Just relieved you're alright."

He rubbed at the scruff on his face idly as his Mauvian seemed to take over the reins from him whether he wanted her to or not. "Oh you have a ring! I can fix that! Gimme," she eagerly held out her paw, "then I can install the fixes! And some updates! I have some apps. Like a GPS and I'm working on a Discord of sorts--"

"I don't think she needs to know all of that off the bat, Vi."

"Well, I think she might!!" Her brow lowered. "Maybe she'll find them useful to start talking to her fellow people in Order. But also!!" The unbridled enthusiasm swung back toward to the Earth page. "This will be good for making sure you can keep talking to people like Encke here. Or me, Viatrix!"

Encke rolled his eyes. "Vi-- Never mind. What's your name?"

if you want to wrap after this feel free but if you wanna keep it going for a few more posts feel free to do that toooo! sorry Encke she's got Feelings about this lol

She paused. The pause was twofold: firstly, she felt a bit offended on the cat's behalf, with the instinctive way that she often felt offended for those dismissed from conversations, even if they were small children. Her natural bias towards taking the side of her own sex seemed to apply here as well - the cat seemed to be female, and that counted as a woman on some level - as did the fact that Viatrix was extremely cute, and she longed to pet her, but wasn't sure if it was rude.

The second reason was more difficult and less petty: it would be the first time she had used that other name for herself. She resisted, for a moment, the necessity of using it - the finality of putting a name on herself that she had not asked for. But she did, after a long and crowded moment, introduce herself with a name that was indeed extraordinarily French, addressing herself more to the Mauvian than Encke: "Joyeuse Garde," she said, the momentary impeccable accent lapsing away to her more usual: "Joy."

She knelt down, pulling the heavy ring from her finger and offering it forward, her attention all on the cat, as if to reproach Encke for his dismissing her enthusiasm. "I think I was supposed to be looking for someone like you," she told her. "You're right. I do need your help with that." She glanced up at Encke, and then back at Viatrix. "Since I already got your friend's help, maybe I can ask for yours now."
PostPosted: Thu Jan 23, 2025 11:22 am

"Joyeuse Garde," repeated Encke to themself, and the way the name came out had an odd Spanish cadence that didn't quite fit the French origins of the name. They weren't dense; they could tell her attention had shifted to their overenthusiastic bonded, but that didn't mean they didn't offer a, "Nice to meet you, Joy. I'm sorry it wasn't under better circumstances."

"Don't mind them, Joy!" cut in Viatrix, happily taking the ring and going to work on it. Her little paws glowed subtly as she messed with it this was and that. "He's a little grumpy lately..." and she understood why, but this wasn't the place to dump all of her bonded's trauma without said bonded's permission. Considering how long it took for Encke to finally tell Pendour about that whole Youma ... Stint...

Encke sighed, shifting and glancing to the side. Maybe he was a little grumpy, but he was mostly worried that everyone was going to die. It made his approach a bit more brusque than it used to be, he supposed-

"Everyone's always gotta have a Mauvian. And knights don't have it as easy to find us." Viatrix kept working, tinkering with small pieces with a finesse that seemed impossible with paws. She wished she could access her human form right now, but she didn't want to make them a beacon with Joy being so new. "Luckily I have a lot of knight connections! I think I actually know more knights than senshi."

Her brow knit. There were Basiluzzo, Stromboli, and Nectaris, obviously, but then frequent visitors and current and former residents like Emain Ablach, and Promethei, and Hy-Brasil, and Mystras, and ... she was getting distracted, there was no point in counting when there was science to do.

"Anyway, lack of easy communication is an issue for all of us, from the fifteen-year veteran to the newbie, so I'm testing it but I'm going to go ahead and include my Discorder app on here too-- when it goes online hopefully it makes it easier to find us, besides for the other little tweaks I'm making here..."

She shoved it in Joy's direction.

"And done!"

Rejam
I'm fine either way if the flow feels like it can keep going or even continue into another RP! Encke is ... So jaded and it is reflecting in his interactions so he's not even taking it personally fff
