As the year comes to an end, an abnormal cold snap has taken over Tendaji. The mountains of Zena are covered in a blizzard, and even the desert of Oba is feeling a bit of an abnormal chill.

[ What do you get up to during the cold? Do you find a place to warm up, or check up on a friend? ]

Eliazer coughed a few times into his fisted hand before tightening the scarf around his neck. As much as he'd come to use it to disguise his marking, an abnormally harsh storm had settled in Zenner making it hard to get around. Collecting information and making moves was made all the harder by winds that were strong enough to cut his skin and in an instant of leaving any building his very core was frozen.

He honestly couldn't remember a time when a winter storm had laid seige to the city with this much vigor, but now that it was here they were powerless against it. Spend too much time outside and you would risk frostbite. Even walking was hard with snow that nearly swallowed his legs, let alone any soul shorter than him.

So after a fruitless search for info Eli had settled for grabbing some supplies (what he could nab with meager coin, that is) before heading back to the inn.

Goodness, one might think that having some iceling blood would be a benefit in this situation! But nooooo~! Honi shivered as she stared at the tiny fireplace of the ramshackle room she and Eli were staying in for now. With minimal spending money, she'd braved the outside to grab the last bit of pottery from the shop that she had made. With that, she had been able to trade for some firewood.

Lighting a fire with numb fingers was no easy task, but finally, finally, that thin, blissful line of smoke rose and the faint glow of a fire began to gorge itself on the kindling until wee flames licked along the chopped wood. The touch of warmth to her face made Honi smile with relief. Part of her was grateful to have such a limited space for the fire, for that reduced the risk of having yet another building burn down around her. Yet, unfortunately, she was sure that most of the room wouldn't feel even a tickle of the heat.

By the time he'd reached their room Eliazer's fingers were numb. He'd long since lost feeling in his ears, even after moving the scarf up his neck. There just wasn't helping it; they didn't have the funds to properly prepare for weather like this and he'd had to endure. It wasn't the first winter his lack of coin had kept him from being comfortable, but it was the first he'd felt guilty for it. With his family they'd just come to accept it; with Honi he...couldn't.

When he came in to see her next to the barest scrap of a fire his heart ached. Things had been a little...off, since the fight with Adhira and Eli hadn't tried to push things. Still, as he gently closed the door behind him Eli offered an almost sheepish smile as he brought his findings over to her. He didn't bother taking off his boots, why risk losing the warmth?, and simply settled down next to her by the fire.

"It's not much, but at least it's good?" He signed, fingers stiff from disuse and cold. Inside the satchel were a few small husks of bread and a slice of roast...something. The smell had been good enough that he took the chance. "Got it from the general store. His wife made it."

Honi's eyes snapped over at the creak of the door; a momentary concern in her eyes, and then relief. She scootched enough to make sure Eli had the same exposure to the little fire. It was a little tough to read his hands, but she thought she got the idea. "It's going to taste great," she assured without hesitation. The sight of the meager meal was enough to make her stomach growl loudly, which in turn sent heat to her cheeks. It could have been a pouch of those overly sour fruits she had tried early after their arrival and she still would have been delighted to eat it.

Even so, she made sure to portion out the bread to leave a little more for Eli than she took for herself. The medicine she had gotten him certainly seemed to have helped, and she was determined to make sure he recovered as well as he could. He needed his strength more. If only she'd had enough pottery left to trade for more food. For more of anything.

At that point, her expression turned apologetic. "There were a lot of people at the studio today. All of them trying to stay warm with the kiln running on low. I'll have to wait for this freeze to break before I can make anything more to sell or trade. The last piece I had got us the extra wood." Her eyes fell to the thin flame. It was better than nothing... "If we keep it low, it should last us the night."

Eliazer was so cold he didn't question the way Honi portioned their meal. If he'd been feeling more himself he might have pinched that extra sliver off and snuck it onto her side. As it stood his fingers could barely pinch enough to pop into his own mouth before Eli held them in front of the fire once more.

When he tried to moved his hands to respond to her he found them stiff and nearly painful to move. The cold was leaving his digits and in their wake came an uncomfortable tingling sensation that caused him to grimace.

He managed the sign for 'thank you' before thrusting his fingers at the meager fire once more. The brief thought of writing came to mind, but if he couldn't make his fingers work how would he hold a piece of coal?

It wasn't any gourmet meal, but Honi tried to savor it as much as she could. Considering how easy it would have been to spiral into a much darker frame of mind, she clutched at whatever goodness she could find. A tiny fire that was better than nothing, a few bites of food that was decently made, having company again. The little things would keep that desperately needed light going.

Oh, but that looked painful... "Here. Let me help." She slowly reached out to gingerly pull one of Eli's arms back to her. Even to her chilled fingers, Eli's felt like icicles as she attempted to rub some warmth back into them for him.
