“Hush, my dear.” Qingcheng couldn’t stop his amused expression though, and the smile that didn’t quite meet his eyes. “If you fight them, they’ll simply forbid you from visiting and will hold me accountable and...I’m not…” He sighed, resting against the male for a moment, looking honestly tired. “I’m not sure I have the strength for yet another punishment this season.”

The idea of running off and getting married with Laojun was a tempting on and the Squire sighed softly, but shook his head. “...I would. Run away with you, I truly would but. There isn’t really any blood to take over. My sister’s son, he’s a senshi, and with my sister gone...there isn’t anyone else left. It’s up to me to produce an heir...I just.”

He rubbed the bridge of his nose and shook his head. “...I just wish they didn’t expect me to have to marry someone in order to have the heir. A child is a child, and tying myself to someone I don’t love...seems worse than simply producing a child with them…”

“There isn’t a need for you to marry, it’s just to try and cut you off.” He gritted his teeth, the idea of the punishments alone often made him wish violence on the elders, but he didn’t wish to make his beloved’s life any harder.

He huffed and snarled “besides- your sister had a SON, he won’t be hindered if he produced an heir, there is no guarantee his child wouldn’t be a knight. It’s all excuses and games. I’m sorry, I know I shouldn’t add to your upset.” He tried hard to find the peace that people so often associated with his wonder, a place of remove and quiet. They often forgot the fierce peeks and dagger like ice that shaped it as well.

Qingcheng laughed softly. “Yes, she produced a son and then went on a mission and died before she could give us any more heirs...it isn’t fair.” He was only half joking, he did miss his sister, though she had been a great deal older than him. It had still been a loss when she was killed.

“You’re not adding to my upset at all...we’re just talking through things...I’m going to fight it, Lao. I’ll fight it as hard as I can...and if they still insist I marry whoever it is, well...we’ll see. Because...I’ll just. Leave. If I have to.” He hesitated, looking up at his love. “...I could always come and stay at your wonder, couldn’t I? If worst came to the worst. WE could simply marry and I could just. Live with you. Give up the knights mantle if it really comes to that…”

It wasn’t something that he wanted to ever think about doing but.

If the elders continued to push…

“They can find their own replacement. It won’t be my issue any longer if that’s the case.”

He nuzzled into Qingcheng’s neck and sighed, breathing deep like somehow he could preserve the moment.
“If they push for it, tell them I get…visitation rights’ at least.” He huffed. “I will find a way to temporarily mummify whatever bride they try and convince you to take, just so that we can have OUR time together.”

He had to smirk slightly at that thought, let the Elders and their awful ways lose their puritanical minds at that thought.

“Maybe that will put them off their measure; I can’t imagine they’d be anything but vindictive if you tried to step away. I wish… I wish you could join us; you’d look so very well in purple.” He teased.

“Only temporarily? If she’s annoying enough, you could do a permanent mummification, I wouldn’t mind at all.” Perhaps that wasn’t completely true, but Qingcheng knew who he loved, and that person was curled up against him at this moment in time. There just wasn’t room in his heart or his life for...a wife that he had absolutely no interest in.

“Do you think I’d look good in purple? I bet you’d look good in this too, honestly. The next time we’re at your wonder, maybe I can try something on. And I can get you something from Qingcheng too. I think you need a little pastel in your wardrobe, my dear Laojun.” He grinned suddenly, some part of his good mood restored.

“Even if it’s just a colored ribbon for your hair, I think it would be nice if you had something to show that you’re mine. Since...well.”

He nuzzled the male’s neck lightly, pressing a barely there kiss to it. “...You are, aren’t you? Now and forever?”

Laojun hooked his finger through a ring of white jade that hung as an ornament on Qingcheng’s belt, and he smirked. “Well… if they don’t let us exchange other rings, perhaps you can give me this one as a token.”

In turn, he paused and then snapped a strap from the wrist of one glove. The symbol was a curious silver thing with two arching prongs almost like horns over a faded green gem.

“In exchange… you could carry this with you; perhaps it could take the place that this little jade charm did, and I will wear the ring around my neck, where I will miss feeling your arms around me.”

Giving a heavy sigh, Qingcheng looked up at the other squire and shook his head, half amused. “...How dare you simply take the engagement ring that I simply haven’t had the courage to give you yet. Or the daring. Or the permission. Ah well.” He slid the ring back off of Laojun’s finger and quietly snapped the thin chain that had held the ring, looking over it with an expression that seemed very far away.

“Another tradition of Qingcheng, you know. This was meant for the hand of my beloved. My betrothed. My wife. Partner. Whatever.” His eyes were fixed on the pale jade and he sighed, taking Laojun’s hand and sliding the ring onto his finger, his eyes flickering up to meet the other Squire’s. “Guess it’s one I’m going to have to break. Sort of. You’re the only partner I want. You’re the other half of my heart, and I love you. Even if I have to get married to someone else...this ring is yours. Now and forever.”

The elders would have a fit, but he didn’t care. He didn’t care at all. “...Only around your neck? LaoLao...I mean. If you must.” He took the charm that the other Squire handed him and ran a finger over the gem. “It’s beautiful. I’ll see about having it made into a hairpin. You know how I like my hairpins.” They had just had a whole conversation about them, after all.

“...If I’m breaking this tradition. Maybe I will hack it all off after all.”

“Perhaps it is mine because it’s us who will be the ones truly wed, it’s supposed to be a matter of love after all.”

He curled fingers in a strand of silver hair letting it fall through his fingers like mercury.
“I will get you a ring, my post has no such fine traditions. We are the ones forgotten, but not by you.”

He brushed a hand along his beloveds cheek.

“Well, even if I had to push your hand, I do accept. And I will love you no matter what length your beautiful hair.”

“You are utterly unforgettable, Laojun. Seriously. I’m not sure how anyone can end up forgetting you. Especially you. You’re...not exactly subtle at all. And you work very hard to make sure that you’re noticed. Most of the time.”

If Qingcheng were being honest, it was all of the time, but now wasn’t really the time to tease. Things were too serious, and there were quite a few emotions being thrown around. It was...strange. “Then. I will accept your ring happily, as I accept this charm and this utterly charming doll. Now...shall we go and find something to eat, and somewhere to eat it? It would be nice to continue forgetting all of my responsibilities and simply...simply exist with you beside me.”

His smile was sad after he spoke, but the Squire was trying. He knew that nothing would change though. Knew that he would never truly be able to fight against the rules of the Elders. Knew that he would never truly be able to be joined to the squire who held his heart.

He would simply have to endure, and enjoy his time with Laojun while it lasted.
