The Aberrant Ones (異常な人たち Ijōna hito-tachi) are eight of the most powerful and unqiue Mages from the Veneficium continent.
To become an Aberrant One, a Mage must pass a few different tests. A test of their raw, physical strength, a test of their skill and athleticism, and a test of their Magical power. There are a few other things, but they are not as important as the former three. A Mage MUST be given this test by one of eight appointed Kings or Queens of each country. Meaning there is an Aberrant for each country's ruler(s). Praeclarus, Malefica, Vulpes, Anromeda, Akujin, Dryadalis, and Drakontas, along with The High Ruler's Aberrant make up the eight Aberrant Ones. The power of these Mages surpasses even the power of the Seven Mages who keep the barrier around Veneficium, to keep it safe from outside contact.
The power of these Mages is so great that, if they were to go all out with their Magic, they could easily cause a cataclysm, or even a natural disaster. Most of their Magic is unheard of, or even unused by other Mages, making them each independently unique in this way. All eight would easily be able to go head to head, or even toe to toe, with the Wizard Saints of Ishgar, or even the Spriggan 12 of Alvarez. But once someone becomes an Aberrant One, the only way for them to revoke the title is to die, or find someone to pass the tests as they did, and give the title to them. Meaning it's usually something that stick with one through the rest of their life. But it's a title that can strike fear or awe throughout the citizens of Veneficium.

NOTE: Each Aberrant has a specific title given to them, which is based upon their main element. For the first three, their title is "Abnormality of", and the other five are "Anomaly of".
