✧✧【 As surprised as Eveline was to see the rather… strange design of the research lab’s interior, the train of averted expectations kept on rolling right down the tracks when a rather young sounding female voice called out to them. She found herself a bit more pleasantly surprised when the owner of the voice made her presence known, having expected to be greeted by an elderly professor with grey hair, wrinkles, a cane in her hand and everything when she first stepped into the lab. Instead the person who popped out from behind the bookshelves was a far younger woman with red-orange hair and teal colored eyes, wearing a rather nice looking outfit as she approached them alongside the corgi-like dog Pokemon who immediately raced over alongside her. ”That’s Sonia, Professor Magnolia’s granddaughter and research assistant,” Lam supplied helpfully to Eve, offering a polite smile and a dip of the head towards the woman.

Sure enough, it seemed Sonia was playing substitute professor for the time being because Magnolia was out doing fieldwork, according to her explanation. ”Ah, that’s no problem at all,” Eve returned with an understanding nod, offering her best smile, ”Though if I’d known I would be meeting the professor’s cute granddaughter instead I would’ve freshened up a bit more before coming in~” She couldn’t help slipping in that flirty little remark, Sonia had certainly made a good first impression by catching her interest. It certainly didn’t hurt that she was rather cute-looking too… Eveline nodded as Sonia excused herself to collect all of the equipment she’d need, slipping in a quick introduction as well. ”Charmed to meet you, Sonia,” she returned easily, turning her attention towards the Yamper who was busying itself with greeting them, ”Well hello there, little guy.” She was admittedly much more of a cat person than a dog person overall, though she’d met enough well trained dogs between all of the Furfrous that were popular around Lumiose to not have a strong dislike of them. Still, Eveline decided she’d at least humor the curious little corgi as she bent down and gave it a couple gentle scritches behind the ears, a touch amused at how it was able to get around so quickly on such short legs.

Gin was unphased as he allowed the Yamper to inspect him without much protest, returning the little corgi’s curious sniffs and playful wags with an impassive but somewhat interested stare. Lambrusco smiled, bending down a bit to greet their new company with a few amiable pats. ”Cute little fellow, don’t you think?” he suggested with a soft laugh, straightening himself as the Yamper moved on to Tonic next. ”I mean I guess,” Eve returned plainly, adorable as it was the little dog wasn’t exactly the kind of Pokemon she’d actually look to catch for herself. Tonic, on the other hand, was clearly perturbed as the Yamper happily bounced around her, ears flattened as she gave the Luxray next to her a ‘What is this thing get it away from me’ look. Gin simply gave a smug grin back at her, ”You’re on your own with this one.” Thankfully the Yamper seemed to have satisfied its curiosity when Sonia finally returned, probably for the better otherwise the Torracat would’ve absolutely considered spraying the annoying dog with a Flamethrower to scare it off.

Eveline nodded gratefully as she accepted the items, not that she really needed to be told what a Pokedex did but she didn’t want to rudely interrupt Sonia’s rather enthusiastic explanation. ”Thanks,” she said, flashing a coy smile to the young assistant as she wished them luck, ”Well in that case definitely keep an eye out for us in the future, darling~” With that, the redhead made an about face turn and took her leave back out to Wedgehurst, her Pokemon following closely along behind her. 】✧✧

Almost as soon as the train's doors opened, a red-haired teen rushed out and ran down the street. Watching the scenery roll by during the ride from Hulbury to Wedgehurst had been a nice change, and Sable had been watching wide-eyed from her window for that entire leg of her trip. But that train ride had come after the long sail from Gateon Port just to get to the Galar region. It was no wonder the teen felt like she was about to burst from excitement after being cooped up for so long. About the only thing that made her slow down at this point was feeling her P*DA vibrate in her pocket. "-bzzzt- Wrong way!" a voice called out from the device's speakers as Sable started down a corner, causing her to stop and look around curiously. "Huh? But Route 1 is over that way, isn't it?" the teen countered before the voice started up again. "Yes, and we can do some training -zzzt- later! But first you need to get registered at the lab!" "Oh, oh right! I, uh... I knew that."

With her course corrected it didn't take long for the teen to make her way to the two-story building with the purple roof. It was a little hard to believe that the house was a lab, but upon opening the door and peering inside her doubts were mostly swept aside. There was enough equipment in the building to make it seem the part, at the very least. "Professor Magnolia? Are you in?" Sable asked as she stepped inside, looking around as she closed the door behind her. "My name is Sable, Sable Voss. I don't mean to be a bother, I'm just here to pick up a Pokedex and get registered." "-bzzt- And supplies!" the speakers of Sable's P*DA crackled again as whatever was inside chimed in. "Yes Impulse, supplies too," the teen agreed with a chuckle.

From the loft above a series of yaps sounded. They were quickly followed by the pitter patter of small paws that quickly descended the stairs. "Oh, a visitor?" A voice of a younger sounding woman followed. Descending the stairs a red-haired woman appeared before Sable to join her excited little Yamper. Giving a smile to the young girl before her she rose a hand as if to wave. "I'm Professor Sonia, my gran is Professor Magnolia, she's not here right now so I'll be the one delighted to help you." Sonia added before slipping around to the back of a nearby desk. Moments later she returned with a generously sized box filled with various supplies. Resting the box down on the floor, Sonia rose with a small rectangular device in her hands. "Unless you got a fancy AI watch, I'm guessing you might be in possession of a Rotom? Well, this device normally comes with a Rotom assistant. This one is empty but it still functions like normal." Finished with her explanation Sonia calmly waited for the young girl before her to reply.

It wasn't long before the sound of loud yapping greeted the teen as a small yellow and green dog pokemon scampered down the stairs. "Oh, hi there!" Sable greeted as she knelt down to give the approaching Yamper some scratches behind the ear, figuring that if they were at the professor's lab then the pokemon was probably friendly. Soon after a young woman with a lot of heart-shaped decorations approached, explaining that while her grandmother wasn't here right now she could assist Sable with what she came here for. "Ah, I see. Nice to meet you, Professor Sonia," the teen greeted as she stood back up, watching patiently as the woman went to retrieve the supplies Sable would need for her journey. When asked about if she had a Rotom, the redhead gave a nod. "Yup, Impulse is one of my partners. Go on, say hi," she replied, that last part directed to the P*DA Sable pulled out of her pocket. "-bzzzt- Hey there!" the voice responded from the device's speaker.

As Sable collected and put away the offered supplies, balls going on her belt while potions went into her bag, a reddish-orange pokemon suddenly popped out from Sable's P*DA before she tucked it back into her pocket. "Hmm... Roto ro..." Impulse muttered curiously as the ghost floated closer to the device the professor held, before suddenly disappearing inside. "Ooh, I think I -zzz- like this one," the Rotom said as the pokedex floated out of Sonia's hand. "It-zzt- got some different features than I'm used to, -bzzt- getting to know them should be a snap." Sable chuckled a bit at the Rotom's assurances. "Sounds like it's a hit, then. Thank you for all your help, Professor," the teen replied, giving the woman a nod and a short wave before turning to head back out the door. "Have a -bzz- nice day!" Impulse added as, still in the pokedex, they floated after their trainer.

"You're late for your appointment by two hours and forty-five minutes. Would you like to reschedule?"

"Eh-" Nicola stifled the yawn he'd been midway through to stare at the Rotom phone hovering near his head. His brow furrowed, mouth sloped in a confused frown.

"Ya bes' check ye'self Bixby. Ainnae no way were runnin tha' late." Bixby was glitchy, but not that glitchy. A question mark appeared in place of the Rotom’s smiling digital one before the phone vibrated loudly.

"Recalculating!" A spinning wheel filled the screen followed by the terrible racket of dial-up. Nicky could feel the lower lid of his left eye twitching in response. They were the only ones on the train this late afternoon, but that didn’t dissuade the looming sense of judgment that some wayward soul was clearly casting. Anyone bound to overhear the conversation would question just what in the world was wrong with Nicola. Ignore the fact that there was no truth to the late claim; how could he have the balls to show up so late?. His mother clearly didn't raise him right! Not respecting other's time and blah blah blah.

"You are now late to your appointment by three hours and twelve minutes. Would you like to reschedule?"

Nicola’s expression didn’t change. In fact, his eye twitched even faster.

"How tha' hell have yew worked it so I’m later than 'afore? Does that make any sense to ya Bixby?" And Rotom phones were supposed to be smart. Maybe the latest ones were, but Bixby proved to be a living testament to the opposite. ”Yer thinkin’ I’m a time traveler now? Is tha’ hill yer climbin' and dyin' on?” The Rotom returned to the default smile face, either unaware or didn’t care that a jump of 27 minutes in the span of 2 made no sense.

”Are you certain you wouldn’t like to reschedule-“

"I dannae, 'cause we're already here." The young man snapped. The train squealed to a halt and he snatched his bag from the empty seat beside him, hauling a** quickly through the walkways and out the door. He spotted one other person along the way; he knew someone was listening in. Warm crisp air and fresh grass filled Nicola’s lungs as he took a deep breath. Wedgehurst was a lot like Turffield but with less farm work and more cottage living. The familiarity was a warm welcome for the start of a new adventure. "You are now late for your appointment by five hours and eleven minutes. Would you like to-“

"Shut yer gub, Bixby." Nicola marched ahead for the most scientific looking of all the surrounding buildings. The Rotom just buzzed still smiling as it hovered after the young man. The lab was a very fancy-lookin' place with its windowed walls and high ceilings. The towering bookcases paced to the brim with any and every book imaginable really helped to draw the motif of research together. Nicola ‘hum hum’ ed as he looked about. It was all very snazzy but he wasn’t here for nerdy sightseeing.

"Hullo, anyone 'round ta give a lad a poke?"

Poor Bixby. It doesn't deserve this kind of abuse.

There's a moment when your call goes unanswered, your question ringing out to a nonexistent audience, before there's a thud and the sound of a heavy object hitting the floor above you. A voice you vaguely recognize as feminine hisses, something you barely catch before, much louder, she called out, "Sure is! I'll be right with ya." There are the sounds of what can only be described as a hasty rearrangement before a bright-haired young woman wound her way down the staircase, the excited click of nails on wood indicating she wasn't alone. "Hullo!" Sonia said, raising a hand up amidst an armful of items, an excited Yamper throwing itself down the last few steps at the new guests. "You're a new trainer, right? Grams and I have been receiving quite a few of you guys lately. Ready to try your luck at the Champion Cup, eh?" She nodded her head in approval, wordlessly passing Nicola his new trainer items. "I'm Sonia, by the way. Let's get that poke of yours and get you on your way!"

If his ears could’ve wiggled, they would have. But Nicola wasn’t a Pokémon with those capabilities and so stuck with turning his gaze towards the ‘thud’, eyebrow cocking curiously at the sounds before the call rang out.

"Nae bother, take yer time." Nicola shuffled a bit to try and get a better scope of the situation. He wasn’t one to idle by if someone needed help though the red-headed woman didn’t miss a skip in her step as she arrived on the scene. Grey eyes immediately latched onto the Yamper at her heels and a grin blossomed across his face.

"Well aren’ yee a cutie," he said, dropping to a knee and offering a hand to the puppy Pokemon to sniff before giving it a scratch under the chin. Who could resist a Yamper? Only a soulless person, in his opinion.

"Aye, am indeed!" He stood back up to his full height, chest puffing out in pride. Sure, sure, some would say he was a few years late to be starting the trainer life. But those fine folk could shove it. There was something that piqued his interest though; the fact they’d been seeing a lot of new blood. That meant competition for the cup… he liked that. He liked it very much.

"The odds of success are decreased by 1.7895% for each new person joining the Champion Cup." The hovering Rotom chimed. Nicola refrained from acknowledging the comment. It really wasn’t necessary. Instead, he turned his focus to trainer items, observing each with a careful eye. They were the kit of true beginners. Not that he didn’t have a few items up his sleeves already, but turning down freebies? Ha, not him. With the goods tucked away in the bag at his side, Nicola turned his attention to the real prize of interest; a row of three particular pokeballs Sonia presented, ripe for the choosing. He already knew which one he’d be selecting.

"’Ere we go," he said, snagging the one with the little symbol of a flame etched onto its stand. Nicola fiddled with the miniaturized ball between the fingers of his left hand, cupping it into his palm as he gave Sonia a two-fingered salute with his other.

"Thank yew, Sonia. Ye been a’ great one," he nodded at her, flashed one last wide smile, and turned to take his leave from the lab. Quickly even as he could already see the gear spinning on Bixby’s face for a response. Whatever it was, it could be addressed outside and of sight of prying eyes when he attempted to throttle the ghost pokemon.
