Michael found himself derailed after the sudden and unexpected death of Ariadne. Things felt out of place, and he found himself questioning once again what he stood for. It was easier with Ariadne around; he had a greater sense that he was doing something right. However, if the only reason he wasn’t lashing out at criminals was because she didn’t want him doing it, then maybe he wasn’t doing the right thing at all. Morally he was more lost than ever. Sitting on the couch and re-evaluating his life took up more time than he anticipated. He’d been sitting there for at least an hour. Looking around in an unfamiliar place didn’t help. He couldn’t stay at Ariadne’s; it felt wrong, and it only reminded him. He likely should have contacted Elena; she always understood, but he needed some time to himself.

There had been a silence between Elena and Michael for a while. It was unlike him not to call or text. Of course, when the news came that Ariadne had died, everything suddenly made sense. Michael was in mourning, and caved in likely, shutting people out. Elena didn’t hesitate to track him down immediately. Maybe he wanted to be alone, but she knew he needed someone. Loyal to a fault, she found herself making calls and trying to get to him. The address was a little confusing to find, but she found him, or at least the door to his apartment. “Michael?” she asked, hoping he’d open the door for her. “I know you’re in there. Please let me in.” She knocked once more. Hopefully she’d hear footsteps, the sound of someone standing, anything.

Michael recognized Elena the instant he caught on to her scent. She pleaded to be let inside, but honestly, he had no reason not to. He quickly stood up and opened it for her. “You really think I’d leave you sitting outside?” Habitually, he stepped forward to hug her. He regretted it not reaching out to her first. Ever since Ariadne died, he’d been alone, and for a while it seemed right, but there came a point when people needed to move forward and welcome others in again. Elena easily deserved to be the first. She had always been there for him, and it wasn’t fair for him to cut her out of all people. “I’ve needed this.”

When his arms wrapped around her waist, her arms all too naturally reached over his shoulders for the embrace. He said he needed it, but she could argue she needed it more, her arms fastening around him tightly, closing her eyes and sighing in relief. Of course, his casual response derailed her slightly, giggling at the odd turnabout. “I’m sorry. I’ve been watching a lot of shitty chick flicks without you and I keep playing it out in my head like them.” After lowering her arms to end their embrace, her hands rose back up at his cheeks. “You should come home.” Her wording made herself a little anxious, not wanting to sound needy, but it just wasn’t the same without him there. While she had begrudgingly tried to be happy for him when he found love, she was both upset it wasn’t with her and that it reduced the time they normally spent together. If he never called her “lover”, then she at least hoped he’d always be around. It was wrong to demand it, but her underlying feelings hadn’t gone away.
