Novice: (Starting out)

Beginner: (2nd rank)

Trainer: (3rd Rank)

Master: (4th rank)

Elitist: (last rank)

You start at Novice. The next rank depends on the level of your Pokemon. When you beat 2 gyms, you will become Beginner. 5 gyms, trainer, 10 gyms Master, 20 gyms, Elite. And that doesn't mean go to every low level gym in every region. It must be one higher than the other to work.
