Spinel was unimpressed with Obsidian's partially hidden form. If she was attempting camouflage then she had failed. The gem noticed the quickly growing crowd of soldiers, spectating this impromptu gladiator-style battle. She supposed it was helpful to observe from ones failures and successes. However, the looks on their faces told a different story. Some, captivated by the thrill of battle, were rooting for the fusion inside. Others, aged with wisdom and experience, knew that this wasn't a fair match.

It was just about to get right into the heat of it when Spinel's attention was drawn to the Ruby by her side. Her voice held some authority to it. Perhaps it was because Spinel was in her territory. Either way, she didn't like being talked down to by a ruby.

Not one to make assumptions, a closer look was needed. Spinel used her screen to pick up any data she could on the ruby. Probably a bit rude, as it expanded right in front of the soldiers face. As expected, the ruby had a bit of history: promotions, exclusive entry to private meetings with White Diamond herself. Quite the impressive gem...for a pebble.

"Of course," she stated as she put the screen away, though sounding less than concerned.

Spinel glanced back at the controls, her long claws going to work immediately. The protective dome around the arena disappeared, the steam inside dissipating. The two looked over at them, bewildered at the sudden halt.

"I'm glad that you bring up the corundum shortage,"
she started, signaling the obsidian to come towards her. "Because that is precisely why I was testing this prospective recruit."

Spinel turned towards the soldier. "My upcoming mission is to scout for planets rich with the mineral."

Ruby barely refrained from rolling her eyes when Spinel scanned her gem with the screen. She lowered her arms and placed her hands on her hips so that the scanner could pick up her gem easier. Ruby was used to this sort of thing; rubies were towards the bottom of the warrior cast in gem society. Other gems weren't accustomed to a ruby speaking or acting with any sort of authority. They thought she was acting above her station until they scanned her gem and saw her rank. It wasn't often that Ruby threw her weight around like this, but her concern for the younger rubies in the arena outweighed her typical reluctance to make waves.

She looked down into the arena and made the hand signal for the rubies to unfuse. All three of them were small for rubies, but most Era-2 gems were these days. Corundum wasn't the only mineral in short supply. The two older rubies rose from the ground in the arena, each supporting each other's weight, while the youngest one sat with her head between her knees. Ruby's gut reaction was to go investigate, but they were surrounded by other rubies and quartzes who would see to her.

Ruby turned her attention back to Spinel, and gave a curt nod. "I pitched that mission with the other spinel on White Diamond's council. Our Diamond approved it a few cycles ago, and Spinel said she would assign it shortly."

She seemed to relax a little now that the rubies were out of harm's way. "Needless to say it's a relief to hear that Spinel wasted no time in assigning the mission. Where do you plan to start?" Ruby asked, genuinely curious.

"We know from preliminary scans that DW-Y361L has corundum, but it's two systems over. Earth would be ideal if it weren't for the Rebels."

Hearing the ruby talk of her past tasks was....irritating. It reminded Spinel that the gem had White Diamond's ear if need be, that Ruby was a higher rank. It wasn't often that Spinel found a gem that went beyond their original purposes, so her ability to police her reaction to it often went unchecked. This was largely due to being off planet so frequently.

A soldier that had nothing to do with the mission, let alone a ruby, asking for details was so bizarre. Spinel had to remind herself of her place before she misspoke.

"Shhh," a hushed tone as she glanced at nearby gems. She looked back at Ruby, speaking in a near whisper.

"That planet is too controversial,"
she frowned. "I'd need a larger team...but it would start to look like we were preparing for battle."

What a sobering thought. Fighting against your own kind. Spinel never heard of any reasons why rebellions were taking place, she just knew that it was happening and it was ruining her work. For her entire existence, she had lived to find resources for Homeworld, for gems to be made, for gems to thrive. During this time of rebellion, gems were shattered, ships were destroyed, spires were damaged...everyone's purpose being tread upon.

It didn't take a genius to tell that Spinel's patience was wearing thin. Rubies were typically the grunt soldiers. They kept their heads down, didn't ask questions, and did what they were told. But that wasn't Ruby's job anymore. It hadn't been for centuries. She wasn't going to revert back to that mindset just because other gems felt she was out of line for her gem type.

There was truth to what Spinel said, though. Earth was controversial. Rumors had already started flying around about the Rebels that somehow survived Homeworld's attack. For a lot of lower-caste gems, those rumors were a shred of hope; and hope was a very dangerous thing.

She shifted uncomfortably, and chose her next words carefully, "There's a possibility that a...team might be sent to Earth soon. Yellow Diamond has unfinished business there that I've been directly involved with."

Her thoughts turned to the platoon of Rubies that had gone missing after seeking out the Rebels. She hadn't received any communication from Ruby Cut 4ND in many cycles, and she was beginning to fear the worst. A larger recon team would need to be sent out. Preferably, one with Quartz soldiers who could handle the Rebels if encountered.

Ruby pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest. It was going to be a nightmare to organize, but it needed to happen soon. "It would be a better use of our resources to try and accomplish as much as we can during that single trip. So, hypothetically, if you had the opportunity to go to Earth what sort of team would you need? How many gems? What types?"

Spinel was satisfied with the rubies next word choices. Gems don't want to hear of war with other gems. Their entire culture was to live in a sustainable manner together, in complete harmony. The rebellion was an utter disruption in their way of life. As such, Spinel wasn't surprised to hear that Yellow Diamond had plans to stop it. It simply needed to be done.

What was shocking to hear, however, was the idea of going to Earth herself. A prospector, in the middle of a battle. Spinel nearly laughed. She would have, if she hadn't detected the seriousness in Ruby's tone. The gem cleared her throat. She needed to consider the idea before giving a proper answer.

"If I had to estimate just how dangerous this mission would hypothetically be," she mused,
"I would suggest two able Quartz soldiers minimum, or anyone of the same ability. I'm very efficient, but that would minimize....distractions, should we come across them."

Chernobylite
Location: White Diamond Barracks
Company: Ruby and Spindle

Chernobylite floated down the hall with a series of holographic pages circling her. White Diamond had always favored Chernobylite in her court for her wisdom and lack of ambition. This lack of courtly attachment led to Chernobylite being sent out more than any other member of court. This suited the gem nicely as it allowed her to gather more knowledge and grow stronger within her station. For this assignment she would be sent with a survey team. Chernobylite often wondered about why White Diamond sent her of these minor missions. "Perhaps White Diamond likes to keep me away from court as much as I do." Chernobylite was after all originally supposed to be a pearl. She silently floated into the room. She rarely entered the barracks but she knew the way. She saw in front of her two gems. She addressed Ruby first as she knew of that particular gems record. She spoke without her mouth opening.

"I am Chernobylite. I have come to assist in your mission by order of White Diamond."
