Applegate City Gym
"Where our fists do the talking!"

The Applegate City Gym is decorated in a manner similar to that of a zen garden as opposed to the usual set up of a fighting specialist. The floor is covered in smooth concrete and lush grass, with the odd pond here and there complete with Goldeen and Finneon floating around the water's surface. The atmosphere is certainly a relaxing one, but don't let that fool you. The trainers here love combat above all else, and the Gym Leader is no exception. Ken Reacher is the prized pupil of the famous fighting type trainer Yamamoto Satoshi, and he commands his Pokémon with incredible skill and discipline for one his age.

Like the rest of the gym, the battlefield is a simple thing of concrete and grass with a bench on either side for people to sit down and observe the matches. Should someone manage to defeat Ken and his team in battle, they will be presented with the Fist Badge as proof of their victory here. The gym is always open for challengers, so come on in and show us what you've got!

Applegate City Gym - Information

Applegate City Gym - Rules and Regulations

All challengers require at least three Pokémon on their team in order to issue a challenge here. Also, no shoes, food or drinks other than water are permitted in the garden.

"The human mind is like a parachute...

Regal wasn't surprised to see Master Yamamoto waiting for him as he entered the gym. Not only was Ken his star pupil, but the master would also be serving as the referee for the match. He seemed to be in high spirits, judging from the spring in his step and the smile on his face as he led his newest disciple inside. When he questioned Regal on his strategy for the match, the trainer just shook his head and told the older man to be patient. It wouldn't be long now.

The two of them arrived at the battlefield, and the trainer was a little taken aback at the design of it. He was expecting a dojo similar to the one that Yamatoto trained his students in. Instead, it was more like a garden with a layer of lush grass and smooth concrete. There were ponds scattered around with Goldeen and Finneon splashing around, and he could swear that he heard a bird Pokémon tweeting in the distance. If he'd been forced to guess, Regal would have assumed the gym belonged to a grass specialist. It was peaceful... but that just made him uneasy. It felt out of place. Like the calm before the storm.

"He should be here any minute now." Yamamoto informed him as the two removed their shoes and stepped inside. "He's been looking forward to this. As have I. Give him everything you've got."

"I will." Regal assured him as he took his place on the challengers side. He breathed in deep and let it out slowly as he steeled himself for battle. This is what they had trained for. This moment. Their second gym battle. It was time.

"Let's do this."

Regal Bastion

It's time!

Running up to the battlefield, Ken took a spectacular leap into the arena as he somersaulted inside. His master and the challenger were both in place, with the older man shaking his head at the boy's enthusiasm but otherwise remaining silent. He was used to Kens antics. The gym leader smiled sheepishly at him before turning his gaze onto Regal. Now THIS guy looked like he would give him a good fight. He was older than he was expecting, but Ken could tell by the way he held himself that Master Yamamoto had put him through his paces. Guess it was time to get the party started.

"Hiya!" was his cheery response as he cracked his knuckles playfully. "I'm Ken! I've been looking forward to meeting you, Regal! Master Yamamoto says you're real good, and he doesn't say that about just anyone. Let's have ourselves a great match!"

With the introductions out of the way, Yamamoto outlined the rules for the two combatants. It would be a two on two battle, with only the challenger allowed to make substitutions. Standard stuff. He had them bow to him, and then to each other in respect before giving them the signal to begin. The gym leader released his Meditite out onto the arena, but gave no commands just yet. Since Regal was the challenger, he would make the first move. Then he could get started.

"Bring it on!"

Regal couldn't help but grin at Kens enthusiasm as the boy entered the arena with a bang. He was everything Regal had imagined and more. As he watched him crack his powerful knuckles and introduce himself, the trainer locked eyes with the gym leader as he made his own introduction.

"It's great to meet you as well, Ken." He started as they bowed to one another. "I've been looking forward to this as well. We're gonna give it everything we've got!"

Ken released his Pokémon first, but graciously waited for his challenger to make the first move. Needing no further prompting, Regal quickly scanned the Meditite with his Pokédex as he clumsily flung Magnolias Poké Ball into the arena. They began by setting up Reflect to protect them from Kens attacks. Once that was done, the little Pokémon then used its wings to whip a powerful Fairy Wind attack at its target.

Normally I would have Magnolia boost its abilities with Quiver Dance, but that would be playing right into Kens hands. He warned himself as his Pokémon launched its attack. His Meditite can use Psych Up to copy any boosts on my Pokémon. To make matters worse, it can also use Baton Pass to switch out and place those boosts onto its partner instead. We'll have to win this with our own strength.

He was tempted to have Magnolia begin laying Powder onto the field as well, but the trainer wisely decided to hold off until he knew what Kens other Pokémon was. His fighting style revolved around hit and run tactics, so he was sure to reveal his hand sooner rather than later. He would just have to be patient.

Regal Bastion

Regals opening move was pretty textbook. That Reflect barrier of his would definitely slow him down, and fairy-type attacks like the one he was using would definitely hurt Kens Pokémon if they made contact. That was a big if, though. As the Ribombee began whipping up its attack, Ken has his Meditite use Mind Reader to look ahead into its opponents movements. Then, as the Fairy Wind sailed across the field, he called for it to use Teleport to change positions. His Pokémon then reappeared a moment later above its opponent before using Baton Pass to switch places with its partner, Monferno.

"Give them a Flame Wheel, Monferno!"

Springing into action, the monkey Pokémon curled itself into a ball of scorching hot flames as it crashed down onto the target below it. With Meditite's Mind Reader passed onto Monferno via Baton Pass, the attack was almost certain to make contact. Hit fast and hit strong. Ken was gonna make this a battle that Regal would never forget. The Reflect barrier would soften the blow somewhat, but getting hit that hard at close range was sure to sting.

His master had nothing but praise for the man standing before him, which as far as Ken was concerned meant that he was free to go all out. Yamamoto wouldn't have said anything otherwise. It had been ages since he'd had a good battle, so the gym leader was especially eager. Hopefully Regal would meet his expectations.

"The human mind is like a parachute...

He knew the kid was fast, but Ken was even faster than Regal had been expecting. In the blink of an eye, the gym leader had already swapped positions, swapped Pokémon and struck a super accurate attack all in one go. The trainer watched helplessly as Magnolia was struck a powerful blow from the newcomer, and knew that if it wasn't for the Reflect barrier and her natural Shield Dust ability, the Ribombee would have probably suffered heavy damage and serious burns. She was alright for now, but Regal knew they couldn't afford to take heavy blows like that. It was time to strike back.

"Retaliate with Aerial Ace!" He commanded as he pointed his Pokédex at the Monferno. "Get in close for a Drain Kiss!"

Still peeved about the surprise attack from above, Magnolia zipped through the air at high speed, leaving nothing but a trail of light behind her. The little Pokémon used her size and mobility to press in close to her target with the super effective blows before coming next to the monkeys face for a quick smooch. While its fire typing would help offset the damage, more than half of the damage it DID take would be recovered by the little fairy. Hopefully that would help reverse the tides.

Showing a bit of decisiveness on her part, Magnolia also tried to spray some Powder on the Monferno while they were in close quarters. That way she wouldn't be the only one hurting if it decided to use its fire attacks again. Meanwhile, Regal kept his eyes trained on Ken for any signs of another quick switch. He couldn't afford to be caught off guard again.

Regal Bastion

Just as Ken expected, Regal was rattled after his Monfernos surprise entrance. He hadn't been prepared for the gym leader to switch Pokémon right off the bat. Rookie mistake. His counterattack was solid though. Kens Monferno was fast, but Regals Ribombee was even faster while also having an extra edge due to its small size. The fire type struck out with Drain Punch against the Aerial Ace attacks to knock them back, but it was still getting welted by the rapid blows while its own attack were walled by Reflect. It helped that the attacks weren't too strong, but Ken could tell that his Monferno was getting annoyed. Even more so after it took a glancing Draining Kiss. As it tried to spray Powder on his Pokémon, Ken called out for new instructions.

"Dodge it with Acrobatics, Monfero!" He commanded. "Then use U-Turn!"

Quick as a flash, the flame monkey nimbly maneuvered around its tiny opponent before leaping back for another switch. Now Kens Meditite was back on the field, and already performing Acupressure to boost its abilities. Ken could tell by the fighting-types signal to him that it had boosted its special attack, so the gym leader went with the flow and ordered it to use Psybeam. A blast of multi-colored light shot out from the Meditites hands and sailed towards its target. Hopefully the sudden change to long-range would keep Regal off balance, Ken commanded his Pokémon to keep firing until further instruction.

That Ribombee would be a pest if Ken allowed it to keep wailing at his team with its super-effective attacks. It wouldn't be able to keep it up forever, though. He was going at Regals Pokémon full throttle from the get go, but his team was still able to catch its breath in between assaults. The trainer was gonna have to find out how to defend himself while keeping his Pokémon healthy. It would be interesting to see how he responded.

"The human mind is like a parachute...

Regals spirits were lifted as he watched Magnolias attacks hit home. They were glancing blows without much damage behind them, but their super-effectiveness was having the desired effect on Kens Pokémon. He went for another switch, but this time the trainer was ready for it. Using Acupressure and then switching to long-range was more unexpected, but this time Magnolia was prepared for the incoming attacks and used her aura-reading abilities to help dodge the incoming Psybeam while also laying more Powder onto the battlefield for later.

Ken didn't stop firing at one attack, however, and the Ribombee was stuck on the defensive as she continued to dodge the incoming blows. The gym leader wasn't giving them much room to counter attack, so Regal was gonna have to get creative. According to the Pokédex, Meditite drew their strength from their own spiritual power, which was honed through meditation. On the other hand, he reasoned, breaking the fighting-types concentration and making it lose focus would serve to weaken it. Luckily, Magnolia had some tools to help it do just that.

"Use Sweet Scent." He instructed. Even while dodging the incoming blasts, it was a simple matter for Magnolia to weave in the sweet, honey-like aroma through the air as she zipped about. Regal knew from experience that most Pokémon found the smell irresistible, and that it would only be a matter of time until their target lost its focus. Once he was satisfied with how sweet the battlefield smelled, he commanded the Ribombee to follow up with Bug Buzz. She complied immediately, generating a loud sound wave targeted at Kens Meditite. Hopefully that would be enough to finally break its concentration.

Regal Bastion

Ken watched eagerly as Regals Pokémon dodged the incoming Psybeams with its speed and abilities. It seemed they were finally getting into the groove of things. His Meditites assault still left them on the defensive though, and he had no plans of slowing down to let them counterattack. Despite their efforts, the challenger still managed to pull one over on him. Before he realized it, the air was sweet with the scent of fresh honey, and his Meditites attack began to slow down as it became distracted by the aroma.

Sweet Scent! He realized just a little too late. Fully entranced by the smell, Kens Pokémon left itself wide open to Regals next attack and was knocked off its feet by the unexpected Bug Buzz his Ribombee sent their way. Deciding to cut his losses, Ken had Meditite use Baton Pass to switch back to his Monferno once again. A little time to recover and regain its focus would make all the difference. In the meantime, he and Monferno would give Regal some payback.

"Use Taunt, Monferno. Then Mach Punch!" Turning around, the monkey Pokémon shrieked some choice words at its tiny opponent while slapping its rear. It may have been crude, but shutting down the insects Sweet Scent was worth it. Now riled up, the fighting-type advanced at rapid speed before swinging a high-speed punch at Regals Pokémon. That oughta take them down a peg.

Ken was all smiles as he watched his Pokémon wind up for another punch. This guy was everything Master Yamamoto had promised him. He was already adapting to the gym leaders speedy fighting style, and using Sweet Scent like that had been a great way to deal with his Meditite. And the match was only just getting started! Hopefully he could keep it up, because Ken was starting to get into it as well. What a great battle!

"The human mind is like a parachute...

Their Sweet Scent gambit had paid off, but Ken wasn't slowing down in the slightest. Regal thought the forced switch to the Gym Leaders Monferno meant they had the upper hand, but Magnolias Reflect barrier was cracked by the first Mach Punch, and the fighting-types second swing shattered it completely. The Ribombee was sent flying, but luckily didn't suffer too much damage thanks to her typing cushioning the blow. Still, the loss of her barrier was a big deal. And thanks to her opponents Taunt, they couldn't form a new one, either.

"Return, Magnolia." Regal commanded as he held up her Poké Ball. The beam of light returned the Ribombee to its capsule as the trainer clumsily threw another into the battlefield, releasing his Pidgeotto into the fray. Magnolia could take a breather for now. Icarus was better suited to battling a bruiser like Kens Monferno, anyways.

"Start with Reflect." He instructed. Another shimmering barrier formed around Icarus, which was sure to irritate its opponent as it deflected their attacks. In case the gym leader decided to use Taunt again, Regal also had Icarus use Tailwind to speed itself up. Normally he would use Agility, but there was always the risk of Ken switching to Meditite and copying the boost with Psych Up. Regal was determined not to let his opponent battle the way he wanted.

With their defenses in place, Regal decided to start off strong with Wing Attack, and tried not to look too proud as Icarus charged bravely towards its opponent. Long-range would have been better under normal circumstances, but the trainer didn't want his target to set off the Powder Magnolia had set on the battlefield just yet with its fire attacks. It was more risky, but they would take their chances in close quarters for now. They just had to buy some time.

Regal Bastion

Ken was all smiles as his challenger finally returned his Ribombee. That good mood quickly turned to annoyance however as he observed Regals second Pokémon. A Pidgeotto might not have been as bad as his first choice, but a flying type following the pesky fairy was definitely gonna be an uphill challenge for his team. To make matters worse, it also knew Reflect. This guy had definitely done his homework. It should have been expected since he had trained with his master, but Ken was still annoyed.

Not done rubbing salt in the wound, Regal also used Tailwind to boost his Pokémons speed instead of Agility. Come to think of it, he hadn't used Quiver Dance when battling with his Ribombee, either. Was he being wary of his Meditites Psych Up? How quickly was this guy absorbing the information from his Pokédex? He was like some kind of computer. Well first things first; they needed to push him back.

"We're gonna take him head on, Monferno! Use Power-Up Punch!"

Rallied by its trainers choice of tactics, Kens Monferno swung a heavy punch to clash against its opponents Wing Attack. The two attacks collided against one another, but the fiery monkey refused to be knocked back. Seeing as they were in such close quarters, Ken decided to give his opponent an attack he wouldn't soon forget. "Use Flash and then Thunder Punch!" He instructed. Swinging its tail around towards its targets face, the fire type lit its tail flame bright in attempt to temporarily blind it before swinging with a powerful Thunder Punch with its free fist. That bird wasn't gonna know what hit it.

"The human mind is like a parachute...

Regal had known going in that taking on Ken and his Monferno at close-range would be an uphill battle, but he still hadn't expected them to be so strong. The monkeys Power-Up Punch brought his Pidgeottos Wing Attack to an abrupt halt, and the following Thunder Punch was even stronger after the attack boost. Thanks to his Keen Eyes, Icarus was able to see the attack coming through the surprise Flash, and was barely able to use Detect to avoid full damage. The glancing blow still sent the bird reeling even with Reflect, but its trainer knew that it could have been a lot worse. Ken wasn't messing around.

Don't let him battle the way he wants. He reminded himself. He's used to being the aggressor. I need to push him back and force him onto the defensive!

"Feather Dance!" He commanded. Recovering from the Thunder Punch, Icarus blew a wave of down feathers at its opponent to weaken it after its power boost. After that, Regal instructed the bird to return to the offense with Aerial Ace. Already quick and accurate, the attack was little more than a blur with Icarus being boosted by Tailwind. They mixed it up between that and Quick Attack, choosing to alternate between speed and precision. The important thing was keep up the offensive while Magnolia took a breather. If things got hairy, they also had a secret weapon up their sleeve. Hopefully it wouldn't come to that, though. He wasn't entirely sure that it would work.

Once Magnolia's recovered some of her energy, I can switch her back in to finish setting up our attack. I just need to be patient. Icarus and I got this!

Regal Bastion

Ken was impressed to see Regals Pidgeotto avoid his surprise attack, even if it still got grazed. Detect was one of his masters favorite techniques, so it made sense in hindsight that he would have taught it to the trainers Pokémon. He expected the challenger to back off after nearly getting nailed with a super effective attack, but instead Regal and his Pokémon jumped right back into it with high speed attacks instead. Normally his Monferno would be faster, but with Tailwind in effect it was struggling to keep up. After a few rounds of knocking the birds attacks back with Mach Punch, Ken decided it was time for another switch.

"Use U-Turn, Monferno!" He commanded. Recognizing the signal to tag out, the monkey struck one last blow before returning to its ball. The gym leaders Meditite was sent to take its place, and Ken immediately commanded it to use Endure as it took a Quick Attack head on. It stung, but now they had their target in their sights.

"Now use Confusion."

Eyes glowing blue with psychic power, Kens Meditite focused its inner power to halt the Pidgeotto in its tracks. It may have been fast, but even speed had its limits. Now they had them where they wanted them, Ken had his Pokémon try to slam its opponent into the ground. Hopefully that would finally get it to slow down. Regal was tough, but most new trainers were unaccustomed to battling psychic types this early into their journey. He probably wasn't expecting such an attack to come from a fighting-type specialist either, so hopefully the change in technique would come as a surprise. Either way, Ken was expecting the trainer not to know what hit him.

"The human mind is like a parachute...

Regal wasn't surprised to see Ken switch Pokémon again after the clash between Icarus and his Monferno began to tilt in his favor, but the sudden Confusion attack was very unexpected. The Pidgeotto was frozen stiff before being slammed unceremoniously into the ground, and its trainer could tell from the look in its eye that it was understandably ticked off.

Deciding to make use of that anger, Regal had Icarus return to the skies and begin attacking with Air Slash. The bird Pokémons wings glowed a blue-ish white as it whipped the razor sharp projectiles at its target. There was no reason to avoid long range combat against this opponent, so the Pidgeotto was free to attack however it wanted. Since they were going full offense, the duo decided to keep up the pressure by following up with Aerial Ace. The Pidgeottos Tailwind was still in effect, so they needed to make the most out of it while they still could.

Not much longer now. He thought as Icarus dived once more towards Kens Meditite. Magnolia should have caught her breath by now. After this next exchange, we can finally move onto phase two. We just need to keep up the attacks. I won't let all our hard work go to waste. We're gonna win this!

Regal Bastion

Regal seemed to favor a much more aggressive battling style with his Pidgeotto than he had with his Ribombee from earlier. The bird Pokémons Air Slash was very strong, but luckily his Meditite was able to blast it away with a Psybeam. As the resulting smoke cloud began to disperse though, the gym leader barely spotted its opponent diving in for a fresh attack, and his Pokémon was forced to use Detect to defend itself. Much like Regals own experience, Kens Meditite wasn't able to dodge the high speed attack completely but was able to reduce the damage to a mere graze. Still, it was close. Very close.

"Use Reversal, Meditite!" Ken commanded. It was a practical choice, given that his Pokémon just took damage. Wreathing itself in a golden-orange aura, the fighting type struck back against its attacker. Using the opponents strengths against them was one of the fundamental principles of Master Yamamotos lessons. If Regal wanted to push ahead with offense, then Ken would meet him head on. This was the kind of battle that got his blood pumping.

"Keep up the good work, you guys!" He encouraged them as his Meditite fought back. "I can't tell you how much of a blast I'm having right now. It's been ages since I've had a battle I can really sink my teeth into! Let's both give it everything we've got!"
