"Perhaps I have traveled too far." Wolfheart muttered to no one in particular, the sun shining brilliantly in the noon-day sky. He had been traveling for the better part of two days in search of a specific herd. You see, Wolfheart was in need of a midwife. Not for himself, of course, for he did not have a mate as of yet but for a friend of his instead. Leilani was close to childbirth and, due to the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, he did not see it going smoothly. So the 'Suti half-breed had set out on a quest.

It was during the first day of his journey that he happened upon a bit of luck. A fellow traveler had informed him of a wandering reenactment faire. Among the troupe, the traveler explained, was a skilled midwife capable of handling any birthing challenges with ease. Wolfheart quickly learned the current whereabouts of the herd and set off, thanking the sojourner profusely before dashing off.

Now Wolfheart found himself among a dense forest with no inkling of where he might be. "This does not sound like what the traveler described." He glanced all around, hoping for some hint of familiarity. "Should I turn back?" He asked himself once more as he exited the treeline. A large clearing stretched before him and, within the middle of it, sat colorful tents placed in a circular pattern. Music could be heard wafting on the wind- the sounds of laughter and gaiety intermingling in the air. "At last!" Wolfheart swelled with pride at having found the faire. His legs knew no obstacles as they swiftly carried him into the center of the excitement. He would find Leilani a midwife yet!

"Where is she?" Chocolat said, partly to her self and partly out loud as she poked her head out of the tent fabric, looking around for her familiar, a river otter called Nott. The little blue patterned creature was the mare's 'hands', as although Chocolat was a fairly skilled midwife, anytime there was anything delicate to be done that would require finer motor skills than hooves could manage, she was invaluable.

Nott had gone out at early light before any visitors could possibly show up, as Chocolat needed some herbs, especially those that could be used as antiseptic salves and pain relievers. Chocolat wasn't a herbalist herself, she relied on another Soquili to make anything from the herbs, but she had basic knowledge of some plants that could be used without being treated in any way.

Looking up at the sky, she noted the time of day and realised a fair amount of the morning had gone past, and with a swivel of her ears she could hear sounds that indicated there were now visitors milling around the faire. Concerned and also a little annoyed now, she pushed her way out of the medical tent. The mist that made up her mane and tail billowed as she moved, and she moved with purpose, avoiding crowds as much as she could as she crossed the faire grounds.

Wolfheart could feel the humming of the faire all around him. All around him, the tenants of the herd plied their trades, their voices ringing out one over the other so as to draw visitors to themselves. It was a sight that the stallion had not seen in many years- when his mother and father had taken him.

He closed his eyes and remained stationary, soaking up the atmosphere. Even now he could hear his father's laughter and feel his mother's playful nuzzle. Her scent tickled his nose once more while his father's strength ebbed into him. It had been a day like no other- a joyous day that had foreshadowed a darker one.

An involuntary flinch rippled throughout his body. Eyes flew open at the sudden memory. "Steady, Wolfheart." He muttered softly, shooing the memory back into the recesses of his mind. "You mustn't let the past distort the present. Leilani is in need, after all." His azure gaze danced around the faire grounds as he calmed himself. Where would one who practices midwifery take up residence in this place? All of the tents seemed to be places of illusion, sorcery, vending, or entertainment. None of them bespoke of the trade he sought after. "Mayhaps it would be wise of me to ask about..." But where to start?

Ears flicked forward at the practiced announcement of the next reenactment battle. Wolfheart could see the announcer from his current location. There were few visitors around that area at the moment so it would be easier to speak with the announcer. "I suppose that is as good of a place as any to begin."

Not quite sure what all the professions are within the Faire. I'm just going with a general circus idea from what I've read in the past. If you see anything wrong, then please let me know and I'll fix it. smile

Chocolat had a momentary thought of perhaps employing the help of one of the spotters to find her wayward familiar but she knew that would really be a misuse of their time and besides, they were meant to be patrolling within the faire grounds and she knew her familiar would have had to travel beyond them to find.

She continued walking through, keeping an eye out in case Nott had made her way back far enough into the faire in the meantime, she wouldn't want to miss the otters return and travel out and then return to find her back at the tent!

As she edged around someone else, she almost walked into a stallion that seemed to have his attention fixed elsewhere whilst he was moving. She gave a cough to get his attention, figuring him for a lost visitor as his face wasn't familiar to her.

"You need to pay attention to where you walk sir." she said, the mist of her mane gently drifting around her head whilst she was stationary

No worries, I'm sure some artistic license is okay - there's a general descrip in this thread if it helps;

The stallion started at hearing someone speak to him. Shifting his gaze, he spotted a rather lovely mare staring at him. Wolfheart blinked owlishly as he processed what she had said. "Forgive me, mi'lady." He bowed his head in both apology and greeting. "It seems that I have become a bit entranced by this faire. I shall pay more attention from here onward."

When he finished speaking, he rose to his full height once more and offered her a warm smile. He couldn't help but take note of how her mane of mist drifted, as if dancing on some phantom wind. Its misty tendrils floated down around shoulders a shade of chocolate... Now is not the time for personal interests, Wolfheart. The stallion silently chastised himself.

He quickly refocused his mind on the task at hand, shoving such thoughts to the back of his mind. "If I may ask, mi'lady," Wolfheart tilted his head slightly. "Would you happen to work for this wondrous faire? I am in need of some assistance in locating someone."

"Yes, it is a very distracting place." Chocolat admitted, she was sure that to a stranger it was tantalising, with lots of sights and sounds to be seen, but for her it was her home and she was always focused on her job within it. She rarely gave herself free time as she felt that she should always be looking to learn and be better as a midwife.

At least he had manners, even he wasn't good at paying attention to his surroundings. She nodded in return, her mane still gently drifting around her head, her tail no less active even though she was not moving.

"Yes, I have a job within this Faire, I am one of the midwives that lives here in case anyone, resident or visitor, or even just a passing traveller should have need of one." she replied.
"Who were you looking for?"

Wolfheart felt his heart nearly bolt from his chest with delight. The spirits have certainly smiled upon me this day! He exulted silently, vibrant blue eyes shining that much brighter. He had done it! His quest would be at its end as soon as he procured the midwife's services.

His soul was giddy with excitement for having so quickly found her. Stretching out his right leg, Wolfheart performed an even deeper bow than his previous one. The tip of his nose nearly touched the ground before he spoke again. "Mi'lady, it is your particular expertise that I seek. If you would, please hear me out...I have a somewhat urgent request to make of you."

The stallion halted in his speech, awaiting her response before pressing any further. A sudden fear gripped him in the silence. What if she cannot render assistance? There was a possibility that she would be unable to aid him and that he might be forced to find another alternative. Wolfheart hoped with all of his being that would not be the case. Leilani would be due soon. He could not afford such a delay.

And another bow. She wished he wouldn't do that, it was attracting attention from passersby and she wasn't one for wanting to be looked at. She wasn't a performer after all, she tended to mothers on their biggest day and was proud to be a part of that but she did it because she felt it her duty, not because she wanted accolades.

"My expertise? So as you've come searching for a midwife, I forgive your lack of attention, I know fathers-to-be are often in a dreadful state when it's that time." she looked past him, searching for a nearby mare who might be the one he was here with.

"Is the lady in question nearby? Can she reach my tent or am I needed to go to her?" Chocolat asked.

Wolfheart could barely contain his enthusiasm for having found the midwife. In his most vivid imagination, he never thought he would find her so quickly. He gave another silent, yet exuberant, thank you to the spirits as the midwife began to speak once more. His elation was quickly tempered, however, by the particular phrase that she used. “Ah.” The stallion started, feeling compelled to glance over his shoulder briefly as well. “Well, it is not exactly like that.” Wolfheart shuffled his hooves. Why am I so nervous suddenly?

He cast his blue eyes towards the awaiting midwife. Mane and tail still wafting elegantly on the breeze. “There was an…incident.” The ‘Suti grimaced involuntarily as Leilani’s tale filtered into his mind. “In truth, I am not sure how much I am free to say. But know that a dear friend is now pregnant, nearly to term. I requested that she remain safely tucked away in her home due to her advanced condition while I journeyed here. Which brings us to how I stand before you now.” Wolfheart looked mildly abashed after the admission, though he knew his decision to travel alone rang true. Leilani could certainly not have made the trek without untoward complications. Clearing his throat, the stallion pressed onward, a note of desperation underlying his words. “Mi’lady, given what I have just revealed, would it be too much to request your return with me? Leilani is in great need of your services, and I would be forever in your debt.”
