Noticing Jun's hesitance, Christian opened his mouth to rescind his question. If it wasn't a story he was comfortable in retelling, then Christian certainly didn't need to know about it; his questioned stemmed from more of a smolder curiosity rather than a burning desire. But, his caution wasn't necessary, as Jun willingly began to speak of his past; seemed like he'd just needed a moment to gather his thoughts.
"A bodyguard, huh?" He knew that Jun kept a sword on him at all times, and while he had figured it was for more than just so, he hadn't realized that his skills were good enough to be paid for. He felt safer already. All jokes aside, Christian, for once, managed to express a more somber look as Jun continued on. Running away from home, with a bodyguard, was some serious business, especially when Jun emphasized how, despite its mystery, it was bad. Christian only nodded, there wasn't any comment he could give that would benefit the conversation. "Where's this guy now?" There were other questions he wanted to ask, building up on his tongue, but each one was heavier than the last, and it was too nice of a day to try and ruin with tension.
But, hm. Jun had mentioned that he'd grown up with this guy and his family, and suddenly Christian remembered their conversation back at the carnival, the first one they'd ever had: how Jun's mother had left him. He had a complicated history, didn't he? Missing mom, raised by an ominous family, and then running away with their son to be his bodyguard.
"Hey." Calling his attention before he realized it, Christian gave a grin. "I'm glad we met." And he meant it, truly. "Also, what's your last name?" It wasn't as if hearing his last name would bring about some sort of revelation, or great 'memory recall', but... part of being a good friend was knowing their full name, wasn't it? "Mine's Small – at least that's what I'm going by."
Not trying to stay in this, self-created, gushy moment, he gave a quick thumbs-up to Jun's promise of not abandoning him, even if multiple failures might warrant it. Though, he did raise an eyebrow at the choking sound he made. Had spit gone down his windpipe?
Still bounding from left to right, Leek gekkered at the bird's surprise and looked down at him in glee; hah, he'd totally gotten him! "Mhm, mhm! Sure was~" Brimming at the praise, the fox stilled his movement's long enough for the interested party to investigate his collar. With his head sinking back in, to give him as much room as he needed, he watched a curious face invade his personal space. "Mmmm, bamboo s'uh... a plant!"Leek knew what bamboo was, kinda, but it was hard to describe to someone who'd never even heard of it before. "S'it's super tough, and it helps protect me from stuff," he explained, as a matter-of-fact, super knowledgeable pokemon.
Suppressing the urge to hold out his candle like a sword and challenge Jun to a battle — one that he would definitely win, Jun's sword experience be damned — Christian nodded. "Sure. But, if I happen to lose — which has such a low possibility we shouldn't even need to discuss it — I'll have to give you an IOU, and buy you a dinner in the near, or possibly even far, future." That seemed... fair, didn't it? It wasn't as if he had money on him, right now.
But that would change, eventually.

Leek seemed experienced enough to warrant a bit less supervision, and for Christian that meant shooting Jun a gloating grin as Leek shook out his fur and plopped his haunches back down onto the ground. Of course, this had only been the very first battle he'd witnessed the fox partake in. It was too early to slip into a laissez faire training style, so he wouldn't take his eyes totally off of him. Especially when there was another one of those electric bi-colored mice, its pink cheeks sparking with electricity, was steadily making its way towards them. "Hey, Leek." The pokemon looked up. "You wanna....?" A vague gesture was made in the direction of the mouse, indicating that he should take some sort of action. Leek tilted his head to the side, as if considering it, before he stood to his paws.

Wagging your rear in the face of your opponent was a... strategy, a weird one, but a strategy nevertheless. One that made both Leek and Christian stare at the bi-colored mouse; if its goal was to confuse them, then it'd succeeded. Leek was the first to recover, forcing Christian to shield his eyes as he unleashed a light from his body. He was still blanketed in darkness when the crackling of electricity caused the hair on his arms and head to stick up. A hand was pulled away, eyes forced to adjust quickly, and Christian looked to Leek, who was a ball of electrified fluff from the collar down; just past him was yet another mouse, a heavy frown across its furry face. Leek, to his credit, was quick to recover, and even quicker to bombard the creature with rainbow-tinted light.

"Where's this guy now?" Christian asked.
"No idea, though he did leave Johto. That was when we split up." After a moment, he decided that wasn't correct. "Well. I left him." Best to get this out of the way. If Christian wanted to leave, he'd rather it happen now. Still, he rubbed his thumb over the pommel of his katana, thinking of how to word this. "You remember I mentioned I used to work for a gang. Didn't exactly leave on good terms. Might have stolen from them." He couldn't remember if he'd mentioned this when he pulled out Articuno's summoning orb, before they got sucked into that crazy dreamscape.
"That sphere that brought Artic-" he sighed, "-Snowball here. They got pretty close, it was safer to leave the kid alone than keep him with me." Also, he probably never could have evaded capture if he'd brought Takumi along. "I found out only a small group knew about it, and most of them were called off. Between that and my team now, I'm not as worried anymore."
This whole time he'd been watching Glyffin and Leek, rather than look at Christian directly. For the first time, he realized he wasn't just worried Christian would choose to leave- he was worried he'd look over and see something like disgust on Christian's face. Or worse, fear, directed at him.
It had all felt so reasonable, so justified while he was doing it. He wanted help getting information about his parents, and they had resources. It was just a job. Pokemon were just tools, animals that enjoyed fighting. Normal, until it wasn't anymore. The longer he spent out of their reach, the more crazy it seemed that he'd ever been comfortable inside of it.
"Hey." Christian's voice finally pulled Jun's eyes to his. And he was...grinning. "I'm glad we met."
Ah. That's... "Me too." He felt something in his chest expand, like taking a breath after holding for too long, and he was smiling back.
"Also, what's your last name? Mine's Small – at least that's what I'm going by."
"Pft."Small? That was- that was his name? No Jun. Don't laugh. This is serious, don't- One bark escaped him, and then another and other. "Sm-small!" He'd been so worried, then relieved, and for some reason that just made this funnier and funnier, until Jun was actually holding his stomach bent over laughing, and a couple of tears squeezed themselves into the tips of his eyes.
He finally got control of himself and straightened up, coughing one last time into his palm. At some point, his hair had fallen around in front of his shoulders, but he didn't seem to notice. "Sorry. It's just- nothing about you is small."I mean, have you seen those arms."It's Wesper-Lyon."
"And I guess if you leave after this, I'll have to sicc my Snowball on you."
While all of this was going on, Glyffin had been having a lovely chat with Leek. When the little fox ducked his head to let Glyffin get a good look at the bamboo collar, the bird happily ran his hands over the weird material, feeling at the edges and the ropey bits that strung it together.
"S'it's super tough, and it helps protect me from stuff," Leek's voice piped up from inside the shade of his collar.
"Super...tough?" Glyffin grabbed the top edge in his hands and started flexing the bamboo, trying to pull it and see if it would break.

"Well. I left him."
Christian raised an eyebrow, a soft "huh" inadvertently falling from his lips. He hadn't expected to learn that, but he did appreciate Jun's honesty. But, this was hardly the last shocking revelation. "...Might have stolen from them." Now that got a stronger reaction out of him: a snort and shake of the head, out of disbelief. It wasn't as if he didn't believe what Jun was telling him, it was just the way he'd worded it, that he 'might' have stolen from them; like he wasn't exactly sure of it.
In the back of his mind, he considered the possibility: if you committed a crime against a crime syndicate, did that cancel the act? A philosophical question for a later date.
Still, despite his lackadaisical approach he was taking Jun's series of confessions seriously. "So, now that your trail has gone cold you're confident enough to let other people travel with you again?" he summed up, his tone neutral. It didn't take much internal searching for him to know how he felt about the entire situation, but he still forced himself to take a minute to process what he'd been told. He wasn't bothered with this information, and he wasn't bothered by the fact that he wasn't bothered. Jun was a former criminal, and his actions had left him wanted by the same people he'd used to work with. So, even if he was sure that his gang was no longer interested in pursuing him, traveling with Jun still posed some level of threat.
Christian understood that, and even after further deliberation he found that his opinion of Jun still hadn't changed. So, once he'd gathered his thoughts the next words he spoke were genuine, and the grin he gave felt impossible to fight off. Though it became impossibly larger when Jun shared his sentiments. Honestly, it was pretty great instance, the kind that left Christian feeling... warmer inside? A real Hallmark moment. Then Jun had to go and ruin it by laughing at his last name.
Well, ruin was an overreaction, still it was a surprise to be sure. "Yeah, Small," he confirmed, and though he didn't find it quite as funny as Jun did, he still let loose a chuckle. But, mainly, he watched Jun. Watched the way his steel blue eyes crinkled with laughter, and his shoulders shook before he eventually doubled over. This was a more relaxed version of Jun, and Christian found that he liked this version of him as well. Not more so than his 'usual' version, this Jun capable of such unrestrained joy was just... nice.
Cute too.
Snorting at the dark-haired male's explanation, Christian copped a smirk and flexed both biceps, "Well, thanks, I guess. Mr. Wesper-Lyon." Two last names, how fancy. Dropping his left hand, with his right he pointed to Jun's hair, "You look good with your hair down."
He held both hands up, already admitting defeat. "Please don't, I hate the cold, and the last thing I need is your great and majestic bird freezing me in place -- or whatever."
There was enough lull in between battles for Leek to continue his conversation with Glyffin, and despite the bird-handling of his collar he stood perfectly still. "Mhm, mhm! See how s'it's not breakin' or nothing? That's because it's that tough," he explained, happy to educate another in the ways of the bamboo. Straining his head out, Leek got snout to beak with Glyffin. "Do you gots'any tough stuff protectin' you?" he asked, curiously looking him over.

It felt odd, hearing his family name coming from Christian. He kind of liked it; though the "Mr." would have to go.
"You look good with your hair down."
"Hmm?" Jun raised a hand, running it down the back of his head where the tie should have been. When did that happen?"You think so?" he asked, tilting his head so it all ran to one side. He noted how different the pull of hair felt when it wasn't in a long tail.
He still had the peace-tie from the halloween festival around his wrist. It made for a decent tie as he gathered his hair together again, though it was fairly long for a hairtie, so two of the tiger-striped strands dangled more than a foot down. Not his preferred color, but it did in a pinch.
"I'll be sure to file your request with the great and majestic Snowball," he stated. If he was going to be stuck with that ridiculous name for the legendary ice type, he'd at least get some free jokes out of it.
Glyffin nodded enthusiastically when Leek asked if he had any tough stuff for protection. "Yep! I got rocks!" He shoved his ands over the edge of Leek's collar, spreading out his talons so Leek could get a good look at the rocks dotting his palm. He also fanned his talons to the side, so Leek could see the scale-like rocks that lined his arms. "I gottem on my legs too. Wanna see?" Without waiting for an answer, he lifted up one leg, hopping to keep his balance while he tried to stretch it out enough for Leek to see.
"What...are they doing?"

Suppressing a snicker, Christian nodded his head. His compliment had been sincere, but with that head tilt of Jun's he was, just very briefly, reminded of a princess; a comparison he doubted Jun would find as humorous as he did, so he'd keep it to himself.
"Hey." Calling out to his friend, the man patted absently at his own golden locks before rubbing the back of his head. "Do you think I could pull off the long haired look?" His hair already reached the nape of his neck, so it wasn't too off to think he could continue growing it out to, perhaps, his shoulders. Still playing with his hair, Christian glanced over at Jun, and his new accessory. "Maybe that's how we can cement our friendship? With matching ponytails." The suggestion came with a half-smile, as serious as it was mirthful.
He sat down, tired of standing, before casting a cursory look in Chickpea and Dune's direction. Yup, they were still sleeping. "Thank you." Returning his attention to Jun, Christian stretched his legs out. "I can only hope that the amazing Snowball is as merciful as he is powerful."
"Oooooh." Widening his eyes so that he could see every last inch of rocky protection, Leek scrutinized Glyffin's palms, then arms, before he gave a confirmatory nod of the head. "I see them!" Popping his head back out, the fox crouched down so that he was eye-level with Glyffin's legs. It was a bit hard to see, what with all his shaking and hopping about, but eventually Leek's ears perked up once he spotted the rocks. "That's so cool! You've got'sa lot of protection on you." Sticking with his crouched position, he kneaded his paws thoughtfully, maybe he could get bamboo on his legs too...
"Maybe they're..." Christian trailed off. He'd had something of an idea, the beginning of an explanation for their pokemons' antics, but it'd fizzled out the longer he watched the two. "I dunno." If Cress was awake, she could've explained. "So, what are we going to do after my gym battle?" he asked, switching the conversation over to a topic that they could actually understand.

Shaking himself off from the last battle, Leek took to walking around aimlessly, fur puffed out and static-y, as Christian captured his ex-opponent. The soft sizzle of electricity popping off his body followed his every step, which wasn't the most pleasant feeling he'd admit. Eventually, his wandering led him to a small bundle of bushes growing near the mouth of a cave he was tempted to enter and explore, but refrained from; for now. Instead, he took to investigating this bush, which, upon closer inspection, he discovered had small, red berries hanging off of it. Eyes on the (newly discovered) prize, he didn't even hesitate to eat one, and was delighted to find that his paralysis subsided.
Still chewing on his berry, Leek pulled his head out of the bush. "Whatcha got there, Leek?" he looked up as Christian approached, and gave a muffled yip. Raising an eyebrow in slight concern, he knelt down to inspect the juice dripping from Leek's muzzle, then glanced over to bush he'd just pulled his head out of. "Huh." A quick check of his book revealed that these were Cheri berries, good for healing paralysis, and, more importantly, not poisonous; they would be useful. So, he collected a few, making sure not to leave the bush barren, and carefully placed them into his bag for safekeeping.
Still keeping low to the ground, he ran his fingers through Leek's fur. "Good find!"

Christian stood to his feet, his bag a little berry-heavier, then placed his hands onto his hips. It was starting to get a little late in the evening, the sun dipping in the sky and lighting it with streaks of dark orange. He looked back to Jun and his team to get an indication on how much longer they'd hang out, but when none was given he turned back to Leek with a shrug. "I guess we'll be here a little longer," he explained to the pokemon, then paused when he noticed the slight trembles of the fox's body.
"You okay there, bud?" He inquired, while instinctively reaching a hand out to press against his forehead. He frowned at the heat that radiated off of him, he felt hot not warm. Pokemon could get sick, right? They were living creatures, and every living creature had an immune system that could be compromised. But was this a... virus sickness or just the adverse affects of the berry he'd just eaten?
It'd looked like a Cheri berry, and they were helpful not harmful, and the onset of food poisoning wasn't usually immediate. With a frown, Christian pulled out Leek's pokeball and pointed it at him. "Why don't you rest for now, and we'll have Nurse Jenny look at you when we get back," he suggested/told the pokemon before returning him. Afterwards, he clipped the pokeball back onto his belt and looked once more in Jun's direction.
They probably needed to get going, now that there was a sense of urgency tied to him, but that little candle stick of his was still going strong and pokemon were still being attracted to its scent. He needed to deal with that, and with Chickpea still asleep... he'd leave the pokemon fighting to Cress.
For now.
After releasing her and giving her a quick potion spritz he, as usual, left the pokemon to her own devices. She was independent, and knew a lot more about battling than he did. So, she'd be fine.
He'd still keep an eye on her though, just to be safe.

"Oh I've always wanted a friend to braid hair with," Jun said, as seriously as he could manage. It was meant to be a joke but the thought of sitting around with a long-haired Christian, braiding each other's hair, didn't...seem....that bad? Did tying knots transfer over to braiding hair?
"Maybe that's how we can cement our friendship? With matching ponytails."
"I'd hope it doesn't take that long. You can't grow this kind of beauty in a week." To emphasize, he ran a hand through the bottom half of his hair, flicking it back behind himself. He didn't even remember the last time he'd made that kind of joke. s**t, was that too corny? Thankfully Christian chose the moment to sit down, saving Jun from having to control his face.
Glyffin nodded earnestly, chest feathers puffing up with pride. "'Course! Gotta have good protection so you can go exploring." And so you could touch everything. "Oh! And this, too!" Glyffin swiveled his head, clearly looking for something. "Aha!" He skipped over to a small patch of hardened bricks, an old bit of road from these ruins. "Ba-bam!" He slapped a talon down, but the single hard movement just made a sort of thump. "Ohh wait wait- yeah, there!" He slapped the ground again, this time a lighter tap, and this time the rocks on his foot clicked against the bricks. It wasn't the best material for it, but as Glyffin tippity tapped a bit more, it made a clear (if unartful) beat.
"!!!!!!!ohmgosh." Glyffin stopped dead and rushed Leek. "Wecoulduseyourcollarlikeadrum!!" Glyffin's eyes were near pitch black from his pupils dilating, and he was only inches from Leek's face. But! But. He was being very good and respecting his friend by not just going ahead and doing it anyways and maybe he was hovering his hands in the air a little bit but he was gonna wait for Leek to agree with him (because of course Leek would agree the idea was awesome).
"Well they...seem to like each other." The 'I think' went unsaid. As weird as the two pokemon were, it was nice watching them just have fun. It was rare to see this kind of thing back during his old 'job'. The one thing they did do, was going out. For drinks, for dinner, for just about anything, really. If there was a chance, anyways, which really only happened after a big job that put their boss in a good enough mood to let their leash up a bit. A gym battle was something to celebrate, right? "Celebrate," he answered Christian's question, assuming his friend would win. "Food," he added. In all seriousness, though- "Not sure. We could go for the next one, if we wanted." He paused for a moment, considering whether asking if Christian wanted to leave the continent for the tropics was too much for their current friendship level. "Any interest in Alola? They have beaches. Food," he mentioned again. While he had a slight ulterior motive, wanting to get the <********> out of Johto while he had Snowball and Lugia with him. Jun had also always wanted to visit Alola. He'd spent many a long winter dreaming of it. Also Christian would look damn good in floral print.

"Hmmm." With his attention elsewhere, Christian missed out on Jun's diva moment but he nodded all the same. "You're right," he eventually agreed and with a hard-wrung sigh, as if the news troubled him deeply. "Our friendship can't wait that long. I'll have to buy a wig." He wanted to be serious because talks like these required this level of... seriousness, so he held onto a somber expression that involved 5% more furrowed brow than fixed frown right up until he made eye contact with Jun again. Then, Christian couldn't help but crack a smile, and then chortle at the image he'd conjured up of himself. "K-knowing the competitor i-in me, my hair probably go past my a**," he explained, between laughs.
Leek was glad he'd found a friend who knew what was important in life, like good protection. Explorin' was important too! And so was... Leek followed Glyffin first with his eyes, and then the regular way, when he began looking then searching for something. "Ba-bam!" He repeated the interjection with the same enthusiasm his friend had given, just with far less understanding. Were they still talking about how cool rocks were? 'Cause if so then— "Ooooh!" Leek shivered with excitement when Glyffin began making actual sounds; this was a lot cooler and way musical-y-ier than just 'rocks'.
What was better than one instrument, though? Two! Leek's eyes widened—not as wide as Glyffin's but near enough, probably—as his mind began to fill with visions of him on the bamboo drums and Glyffin on the... the rock drums. He wanted to tell Glyffin to "sign him up", whatever that meant, right then! But, then he'd had to fight, and then he'd started to feel all gross and sick. So, his answer would have to wait.
"Seems like it," Christian agreed, just as he realized something. "A lot—and by that, I just mean 'some'—of our pokemon are getting along. That bodes well for our travels, eh?" Especially if they were going to make a habit out of leaving their teams unattended. "You had me at food." And to make a point of this, the blonde began gathering what meager belongings he had back into his bag. His words had an air of truth to them, which is what made it all the funnier, but Christian had been ready to accept any of Jun's suggestions; he'd proven himself a reliable source for entertainment and the like.
"Alola?" He sounded the word out more than repeated it back. It didn't stir a single memory, but he liked the way it sounded and fell off the tongue. Plus, beach food usually equaled seafood. Still, though, he wouldn't have been Christian if he didn't play it up somehow.
The man touched the back of his hand loftily to his forehead. "Ah, to be a rich bachelor, able to jet off to the tropical beaches with my boytoy at a moment's notice." When he dropped his hand, which he only did after stroking the air by Jun's cheek with the back of said hand, Christian used it to grab his bag and sling it over one shoulder. "We could even go now if you wanted to. I'm sure this Alola has gyms too, and it's not as if I'm required to get the Joh... JoJo ones— right?"

Glyffin wanted to have a jam session right now with Leek, but just like his friend he was pulled away for some battles. He minded for about five seconds, before the fun of fighting distracted him. Ba-boom! He slapped a talon to the ground and a plump spatter of dirt smacked the wild litwick in the face. After he'd finished, he brushed himself off, getting distracted by the singed feathers on his left wing.

"Alas," he started, full deadpan. "You'll have to settle for the role of boytoy for now." He shouldered his own pack, patting absently where Snowball's orb used to be. "Good point though. Don't see why they wouldn't have gyms. You sure?" He tried to remember what ways to reach Alola he'd heard of. He felt sure there must be a ship from Goldenrod, but he had a specific memory of overhearing an Admin complaining about the lack of ships. Only way he knew of was...back in New Bark town. Hell of a lot of backtracking. Hopefully his old crew wouldn't be hanging around that one cave on the way back. Though with Snowball and Lugia now accompanying him, he would probably be okay. Still made him feel a bit sick to think about. "Well, we have to head back through Violet City anyways."
Dune and Chickpea were still sleeping in the shade. Jun recalled Dune, and his other pokemon. Since Glyffin had been playing with Leek, he got a quick "Time to go." In the past, he would've put the bird right away. Too much to keep track of while traveling. But he could get some training in while they walked. And, well, he did get the sense Glyffin was having fun. Better having Glyffin out than Snowball the drama king.
