personally I would choose the oboe because in your average band bassoon parts aren't that interesting, but your band could be different. It also depends on how much money you want to spend. I you plan on buying or renting one, the oboe costs less than the bassoon.

I'd have to say oboe, because i'm an oboe player, and I love it.

Plus my main instrument is flute, so picking up oboe wasn't hard at all, because the fingerings are really similar. The only thing that messes me up is that some fingerings are opposite from flute, and it can get confusing.

I would say try oboe, because I play oboe, and before that I played flute, and the fingerings are pretty much the same on flute and oboe

I play bassoon.

If you want to pay $13 for a store bought reed
you can change the reed to make it sound better for you
that doesn't sound good most of the time

If you want to learn bass clef
in order to play some pretty awesome music
and then later have to learn tenor clef

If you want to get blasted for being out of tune with the other bassoons
and get praised on the many, many concert solos for bassoon
even though you're actually in tune and they're not

then go for it! ^_^

It's a little trouble with a lot of fun. And also, it's easier to get scholarships for college if you play bassoon... since there aren't that many people who play it. Compared to clarinet, or sax, or flute, anyway.

I would recommend playing the oboe first. The double reed can be hard to get used to, and even though bassoon reeds are cheaper, I'd start with oboe. (Believe me, I spent a year in bands chewing on my reeds and being reprimanded by the band director. It's a natural instinct to chew on it.)

There are also many more pieces that have oboe solos, such as Ritual Fire Dance by Manuel De Falla (awesome piece. It's so exciting it makes my fingers twitch. =D). Bassoons are good instruments to have, but it would be easier in the long run to start on the oboe, then, once comfortable, try the bassoon.

I've been playing oboe for 3 1/2 years and I'm compleately in love with it! It does take alot of work and practice, but it's very rewarding. As for the basoon, that's also a very good instrument. I think anything double reed is amazing.

Yes, personally i like the bassoon. It may be hard to play good, but after a while of practice and some vibrato, it sounds very good. and plus you have this HUGE range of wat u can play, to very low like a tuba, to high as a flute lol, and yes i had to play with the flutes lol in a solo playing their part mad and it sounded the same range lol. so i would prefer bassoon.

I play the oboe, and by the way people who said don't play the oboe becuz it's a double reed instrument, THE OBOE AND THE BASSON R DOUBLE REED INSTRUMENTS!! I dunno I think the oboe is way cool and if U play it U don't have to lug the big basson case around. The oboe case is smaller than a clarenet case. And in the beginning, it will sound like a duck on hellum. But as you get better, it sounds way cool. bands R in dire need 4 oboes and bassons so, your choice.
