One Family....Torn Asunder

Young, full of ideals and positive that they were part of something bigger, Cumulonimbus and Aislin struck out from their home pack and headed into the world in search of their mythical promised land. Along the way, they picked up several companions and would-be packmates, and Aislin's belly grew rounded with pups.

But traveling is hard when you have a slew of puppies on your heels.

And one evening, a pack of wolves descended upon them, hidden by shadows until it was too late to run. They fell onto them, killing several of their members -- adult and child -- and making off with two male puppies, to what purpose their parents will never know.

Cue and Aislin were devastated, naturally.

But they gathered what family they had left and continued on their mission. And not long afterward, a volcanic eruption would tear through their homeland, proving them right all along about the necessity of their pilgrimage. They would cross the threshold north into Tolas and eventually find their promised land, settling in to grow their pack in relative safety and quiet.

But what of those missing brothers? Where did they end up?

A Tale of Two Brothers....
User Image

The last hints of sunlight were still clinging to the horizon when they fell upon you. A group of males, cloaked and huge, with glinting teeth and crimson marks burned upon their brow. Everything was chaos. Young as you were, your memories were a haze.

"Come, little brother," someone said to you. "This is not your real family. They do not care for you the way we will. We are your true brothers."

User Image

These two pups were kidnapped by the Brotherhood and indoctrinated into its ways. The Brotherhood is a pack of males held together by a somewhat militaristic fraternity. They believe that they are superior to all other wolves, hunting them for food and for sport. They live and work in the shadows, are highly secretive and grow their ranks by hand-picking young pups -- pups precisely like yourself.

Within the pack, these two grew particularly close to Zarathustra, a pup slightly older than them. The three became inseparable, with Zarath treating the brothers like his own kin. Playing together as pups, going through their lessons as they grew older. By the time they were adolescents, none had ever seen wolves more strongly bonded.

The pup on the right side is Tides, played by Bombazine.

The pup on the left side is the prize for the winner of this contest.

Zarathustra rose in rank swiftly, proving his value to the older members. It was rumored that he was possessed by the spirit of Danel, the original god-alpha, and through Zarath the Brotherhood's god spoke their orders. Eventually Zarath came to be the new leader of the Brotherhood pack, leading them to safety during the evacuation of Telk and into their new homeland of Tolas. Now, in a world where no one knows their story, they are free to become legends once again.

And Zarath would not dare forget his dearest friends.

You have been appointed as his heir. Should something happen to him, it is your job to take over the pack. You are to be groomed for leadership, and one day perhaps the god will begin speaking to you, too.
PostPosted: Wed Sep 17, 2014 2:22 pm

Notes and Rules:

-- Here's how the Brotherhood's belief system works: The Brotherhood's religion is such that the god-alpha is revered as a deity. It is believed that a certain spirit communicates with him directly, and that through this wolf the god's will is done. Note that while some wolves may believe that that this is true, and may even experience visions or hear the voice speaking to them, this is a matter of religious fervor and the power of suggestion, not actually anything supernatural. In other words, Zarath is spiritual and maybe a little deluded, but he's not a seer.

-- This contest is for an RP-required position. If you win, your wolf will be appointed as heir. If you fall off of Gaia and stop RPing, you will not lose your wolf, but you will lose your rights to that position. You absolutely must stay in contact with me (fenshae) if you feel you can't keep up with RP!

-- By joining the Brotherhood, you agree to the following terms: your wolf can never breed; it cannot leave the pack without suffering serious IC consequences, and you are consenting to play in a pack with themes of cannibalism and misogyny.

--The Brotherhood is an edited pack: fully-fledged members will receive edits that mark them as a member of the pack. In Telk, this consisted of the cloaks pictured above, but new templates are currently being made to better reflect the objects available in Tolas. You'll know when you can get them as soon as we do!

-- Pups will grow onto updated lines and templates.

-- A quick note on names: Cue and Aislin predominately named their pups simple things, choosing to name them after either natural phenomena (Tides) or personality traits (Independence). If your wolf keeps his birth name, it will likely be along those lines. You are of course free to have him take on a different name as part of his new lifestyle.

Meet Your Brothers

The Brotherhood pack is fairly large and plot-intensive, so you might want to look at its pack information before tackling the prompt. Of particular importance to your character are these individuals:

User Image
Zarathustra (played by Fenshae)
precocious - ambitious - alpha-bound

Quiet, solemn and eager to please, young Zarath soaked up everything he could about his pack. He is a deeply loyal friend and the kind of guy who firmly believes that the suffering and triumphs of one are shared by all. He has no patience for bullies and even less patience for cowards. His respect lies in those who work hard to meet their goals. Throughout his life, Zarath has been specially groomed by the omega Rorret, whom he believes to be his half-brother. The idea that the alpha-spirit might speak to him was firmly planted in his mind at a young age, and took hold. Zarath genuinely believes that he is the conduit for something greater than himself, and has no idea that he was manipulated into the position.

User Image

Tides (played by Bombazine)
conflicted - resentful - desperate for approval

Desperate for approval, Tides works hard to be seen as worthy of the pack, but violence and heartlessness do not always come easily to him. However, he has always been jealous of the special attention Zarath received from Rorret and, later, of Zarath's charisma and popularity; he's eager to prove himself and will do all matter of terrible things at Zarath's command in hopes it will give him the attention he craves.

User ImageUser Image
Rorret (played by Fenshae)
intelligent - scheming - thief

One of the pack omegas, a thief responsible for finding and bringing home much of the new blood to the pack. He was curiously absent on the night of your theft, but you've seen much of him sense. He's particularly fond of Zarath, and rumor says that the two are half-brothers, sharing a mother. Rorret often takes Zarath aside for special lessons, though you're not sure what goes on during them.

Fallyn (played by Teigra)
wary - observant - troubled
The chosen heir of the original god-alpha, Danel, Fallyn has twice failed to step up and take charge of the pack. Many regard him as a coward because of it. At one time, he was deeply terrified of the alpha's weapon, a vicious beta who did Danel's dirty work. But with that beta gone, Fallyn is coming out of his shell somewhat, and might just have a thing or two to say about his position being usurped by a few pups.

The Prompt!

Now, with that out of the way, choose one of the following prompts and respond:

Quote:
It's never surprised you that Zarath was alpha-material. You've always looked up to him, and you know he's received plenty of special training and attention, although he's never once rubbed it in your face. You were, however, surprised when he came to you asking if you would accept his position of heir. How do you feel about it? Do you feel unworthy, or like you're finally being recognized? And how has this changed your relationship with your brother?

Quote:
Long before you were even born, the Brotherhood had another heir -- Fallyn, hand-appointed by Danel himself. Twice, Fallyn had the opportunity to rise up to take over the pack, and twice he failed. Many in the pack regard him as a coward. But how do you feel about him? Do you view him as a threat? Sympathize with his feelings? Approach him for guidance?

You can respond to the prompt in whatever way feels most natural to you. It can be an RP scene, an essay, a comic, an interpretive dance, whatever. You're also free to use the other characters referenced in passing, but keep the focus on your wolf.

A Story of Survivors
User Image

These three girls, along with their sister Independence (played by Shadowfox-Sama) were there the night of the Brotherhood's raid. After the raid, the surviving members moved on as best they could, growing up on the move. As you were reaching adulthood, tragedy would once again strike in the form of the volcanic eruption -- but by that time, your little pack had learned to handle tragedy with grace, and you all managed to escape largely unscathed.

And now here you are in Tolas, claiming a territory within what your mother assures you is the promised land she has always dreamed about.

Meet Your Family

User Image

Aislin (played by Fenshae)
loving - dreamer - free spirit

Your mama. She's a sleepy-eyed wolf with her head in the clouds and a tendency to confuse real life with dreams. Her dreams themselves are particularly vivid, and ever since a tragedy truly did befall Telk after she dreamt of it happening (albeit with many months in between), she's been convinced that the dreams are prophetic. In day-to-day life, she's a loving mother and nauseatingly sweet wife to Cue. She's basically your standard "manic pixie dreamer girl" type, but she's gotten a little bit wiser with age. Unbeknownst to her, she has some shaman powers that are just beginning to awaken.

User Image

Cumulonimbus (played by Bombazine)
earnest - observant - driven

Your daddy. He's a little somber, serious, and sometimes not very fun, but he also has a very big heart and a lot of love for your family. When you get him on the right topic, he becomes very earnest and extremely passionate. He used to be deeply troubled by anxiety, but Aislin has helped to calm him a bit (as a good MPDG will do), and his role as alpha and pater familis has given him new purpose in life. He does occasionally suffer from terrible headaches that bring with them visions of light -- their god, who is viewed as both beautiful and terrifying, ultimately benevolent but far too grand for the wolfen brain to behold.

User ImageUser Image Independence (played by Shadowfox-sama)
shadow - give me - descriptors

Your sister. She lives up to her name. Feisty, smart, eager to learn and always willing to explore. She's grown up particularly close to Dubhe, the pack's lead hunter, who has taken her under his tutelage to teach her everything he knows about finding food. They've been particularly close ever since the Brotherhood raid, when Dubhe managed to snatch her from the paws of an eager cannibal. He's been very over-protective of her since.

Eros (played by Fenshae)
clingy - insecure- over-eager

Your closest age-mate in the pack. He lost his mom and brother, and he has a troubling relationship with his daddy, Fubar, who blames him for existing when so many "better" wolves didn't survive. Eros has a big heart and a lot of love to give but is very bad at relating to others. Clingy, over-eager and a little creepy, he's kind of hard to tolerate (but a more loyal friend you'll never find, if you can handle his constant attention-seeking).

Notes & Rules:
-- These girls are destined to grow up in the new pack Followlight. The "god" of this pack is a brilliant orb of light that visits Cue sometimes (during his occasional hallucinatory migraines) and is again a creation of religious belief, not a supernatural entity.

-- Followlight has a very family-oriented, somewhat pilgrim-like feel. Wolves are tight-knit and hunt and eat together as a family. Everyone is concerned with everyone else's business, and they are expected to stay within their territory and avoid contact with outsiders except during a brief period in a pup's adolescence when he or she is allowed to go out and explore the world to decide whether to return home to commit to the pack -- basically like an Amish rumspringa.

-- On picking a name: the naming conventions for this particular litter (and Followlight pups in general) tend toward "pilgrim" type names. Think names related to particular characteristics that are seen as positive, things like Truth, Charity or Patience. Or of things that can be found in nature, like River, Sky or Flower.

-- Your pup can leave when she grows up. It is not strictly required for you to keep your puppy in the pack when she grows up, but we would appreciate it if you did!

-- These pups will grow onto updated lines and templates.

The Prompt!

Quote:
Your age-mate, Eros, is having a bad day. He has them often. But today in particular, the two of you are supposed to be working together on a project for the pack. How do you deal with him when he's moping and crying? Do you just ignore him and do all the work yourself? Do you try to cheer him up? Do you snap at him and tell him to get his act together? Or something else entirely?

Quote:
In your pack, religion is very much a way of life. Your god isn't a nebulous concept, he's something you've grown to believe is real, a being you can communicate with directly. Yet you've never seen him for yourself. How does that make you feel? Are you curious about your mother's dreams and your dad's visions? Are you sad that you haven't had a visitation? Or are you secretly relieved because the whole idea is very scary? Or something else entirely?

You can respond in any way you feel comfortable -- RP scene, essay, comic, interpretive dance, whatever. Just fill out the form and post below:

Prompt response: Your age-mate, Eros, is having a bad day. He has them often. But today in particular, the two of you are supposed to be working together on a project for the pack. (Apologies in advance; this is more of a charrie-bio than a prompt, but it didn't say I couldn't do that? -grins sheepishly- So here ya'll are!)

Clarity is bright-eyed and optimistic about the world with a vivid imagination--sometimes, too vivid. Like, she sees things that aren't quite THERE but she believes in said things so fiercely that they are real to her. That said, she is also frightened of being alone, always sticking close to her sisters...but more recently, close to Eros. She knows the other wolves find him a bit clingy and odd, but she has a playmate for life, in her mind. He'll never leave her. He'll always be there, this she knows with all of her heart and soul. It's not exactly a childhood crush, but it's something a bit similar. Maybe taking the BFF title a biiiit too far? He's cool...and he's usually up for playing little games...and she's good at sweet-talking him into those games.

She's also a bit...absent-minded. So when it comes down to having the project, she's the one nudging, grinning, and convincing Eros into smiling ("Put on a smile, pidgeon!" and "Cheer up, emo-kid!") and then con him into forgetting about the project--time for a game. She hates it when Eros is sad--it makes her sad, so in a way she's empathetic, picking up the emotions of those close to her. And yet, still she soldiers on--put on a smile, put on a show, make them laugh.

She loves her family fiercely and when it comes time for her to "leave" on her crusade, she will a) beg Eros to come with her so she's not alone or b) just...not leave. What's so good about the great big world, anyway? Home is where the heart is, afterall, and hers belongs in Followlight.

I long to be a brother!
Your Name: Kyrieko
Wolf's name: Corrosion
Personality:
Where Tides is desperate for approval, Corro is confident in his abilities. He is eager to please, much like both his brothers, Zarath and Tides. However he does so with the knowledge he will deserve the appraisal given because he worked hard to gain it. Perhaps a bit prideful, Corro will do whatever he must to make his image look good. But he will not discourage anyone else from doing the same. He'll give Tides that extra bit of encouragement to do something while also encouraging Zarath to be the leader he's meant to be. He highly respects and looks up to his brother Zarath, for that is what he is. A true brother, just as Tides. Corro will do whatever Zarath asks of him with the utmost loyalty. And any that try to undermine him - or harass Tides for that matter - will find themselves challenged by his teeth and claws.
Prompt Response:

He found himself taking a small break, gaze wandering and settling on one wolf in particular. It was not the first time he'd unintentionally sat and stared with no expression at this wolf before. No, he just seemed naturally drawn to watching him. Not out of any suspicions of threat or dislike. Just a silent bystander studying something that could be of potential interest. And Fallyn was most certainly interesting. The once heir to the shadowclan, now no different then Corro himself. Though maybe he was a little better than Fallyn now?

Corro chuckled softly to himself. No, they were the same. Both brothers to shadows. But where Fallyn seemed to lack confidence as far as he could tell, Corro made up for it. It still confused the male as to why Fallyn had failed twice to take charge. What would keep someone of his status from doing so?

This was not the first time the thought had plagued his mind as of late. Especially as rumors were that Zarath would fill that spot. Corro very much approved of this. His brother certainly had the makings of an alpha. Or better yet, a deity. A feeling of pride rose in his chest, but not for himself. He was proud of his brother. Encouraged and supported him completely. He'd always known Zarath was different. Meant for something great.

So why hadn't Fallyn been?

Corro licked his lips in thought. He didn't despise the wolf. Nor did he sympathize with him. One had to be strong to take charge. Had to believe in themselves. So maybe this wolf brother of theirs didn't believe? He frowned a little, eyes still on the other male. If Zarath really did become the leader Fallyn should have been, Corro worried that the wolf would become a threat. Perhaps that was why he kept an eye on him?

Well, the wolf had yet to prove himself as more than a 'dreamer'. Wanting to be something he wasn't cut out to be. He would have to watch him. He didn't want to have to consider Fallyn as an adversary. But Zarath was who he would back, no matter what.

Seeing the other wolf glance at him, Corro simply gave him a lopsided grin. A showing of fangs, before turning to return to his work.

Which puppy do you want? Gray, Yellow
Your Name: wibbliewobblie timiewimie
Wolf's name: Mercy
Prompt response:

Mercy pawed at her metallic snout anxiously. Daddy was having a visit from the Light again, and Mama was trying to calm him down. She had told her and her sisters to go play and wait for her to call them back, but Mercy knew it might be hours before her Daddy would be okay again. She could hear his yelps and whines from one of the deeper sections of the cenotes. It made her ache to hear her father, the Alpha (she had just learned the meaning of that word, but still wasn't sure why it meant that he had to be so serious all the time) in such terrible pain. She wanted to help him, help Mama make him cozy and coax away the pain, snuggle into his big furry side and let him know that it would be okay in a little while.

Sometimes this made her hate the Light. She wasn't afraid of it, and she did respect it because it showed her Mama and Daddy where to go to be safe, but she hated that it caused so much pain for them. It just seemed so cruel and unrelenting. Mama seemed to understand more about it than she did, and maybe that had something to do with her dreams. And if Mama thought it wasn't anything to worry about, then it must be okay...right?

She looked down at the dirt below her and realized that she had rubbed her little paws raw from pacing and pawing. It made her head hurt, worrying so much about everything. Sometimes she got so anxious, she felt like she might have a visit from the light herself. This of course just made her more anxious, but she hadn't had one yet. She didn't want one. She just wanted it to stop hurting her Daddy. Mercy continued to pace the caverns, absorbed with her inner monologue of anxiety. She wasn't sure how long it had been since the Light had come, but Daddy's whines had started to quiet down, so maybe it was almost over.

As if reading her mind (Mama had the tendency to do that; know exactly what Mercy was thinking and feeling at any given time. She always got it right.), Mama came looking for the three pups, and let them know that it was okay to come back with her now. Mercy took off at a sprint through the cenotes before she even finished her sentence, panic pricking through her lungs. Daddy?

She cuddled into his side as quickly and quietly as she could. Not wanting to disturb him, but at the same time wanting to make sure he was okay. She wished she could take everyone's pain away, like a sponge. If she cuddled with Daddy enough, she could make the light go away and never hurt him again. Go away, she thought, Daddy has important things to do without you hurting him. But all this worry had left the little pup's tiny body and mind exhausted, and she soon fell asleep curled up into her Daddy's warm side.
