History:
Gemma's family was never well off, and still isn't, but they aren't dirt poor. Her parents have held their tailoring business since before she was born, but their clientele was limited. Most people either made sure to buy well-fitted clothes or made them themselves, and the wealthier citizens had other tailors they frequented; their main niche was larger families that utilized hand-me-downs for their younger children. Unfortunately, despite her quiet demeanor and gentle movements, Gemma never took to sewing. She didn't mind the pace or the quiet of the job, but never liked how...pointless it all felt. Sure, she was helping people get better-fitting clothes, but that was it. She wanted to have more of a meaningful purpose.

As soon as she was old enough to navigate the city on her own, Gemma sought out work as a runner, delivering messages and packages between citizens in the Karanese district. She worked for tips in addition to the meager wages she garnered based on how many deliveries she completed in a day, and it helped a bit in terms of her family's situation. Her elder brother, Luca, had gone into the military and eventually the Scouting Legion a few years prior (and had unfortunately met his demise outside Wall Maria), leaving the family one able body short.

After quite a few years working as a messenger, Gemma began to realize that even this did not have enough purpose to satisfy her. She wanted to make a difference, to contribute to the world. She may not be remembered by name, but she wanted to feel important; there were countless other messengers in Karanese. And so, at the age of sixteen, Gemma sought to enlist in the military training corps. She still doesn't know which branch of the military she would choose should she graduate, but her heart leans toward the Scouting Legion, in honor of Luca. Her parents are afraid for her, afraid of losing their only remaining child, but support her and are proud to see their reserved and gentle daughter branching out and finding her way.
