Personality:
Locke is a very cynical person with a wry sense of humor. He is a pessimist and is drifting without a purpose. This makes him unpredictable and somewhat unreliable; he chooses most of his actions on a mere whim. Money is his best motivator; he'll do just about any job for the right amount of coin. He does have his own personal set of morals, but he will cross even his own lines when it is convenient. Some might describe him as heartless, and he wouldn't deny it. He has a lot of control over his emotions, and can turn them off when he must accomplish an unpleasant or morally questionable task.
Despite his introversion, Locke's weakness is loneliness. He really can't stand knowing that he is completely on his own, so those that manage to become his friend earn his unwavering loyalty. Among those select few that he actually likes, Locke becomes a completely different person. He sheds his icy exterior and reveals that he is actually quite supportive and protective of his friends. He's even somewhat less angsty when he is in their company, although his sarcasm is ever-present. He has a long memory, so he will not easily abandon those that he feels he owes something to. However, this goes both ways; if he feels betrayed, he will hold onto that hatred until he has the chance to exact his revenge. He can be very patient in this respect.
History:
Locke was born in a whorehouse in the Trost district. He never knew his father; his mother, Vera, was a prostitute there. The first few years of his life in which his mother raised him were probably his happiest years, though they were all too short. Locke was too young to know why his mother would tell him to stay put while she left with various strange men, so she spun him a tale that she was a lady of stature-- almost a noblewoman!-- and the men all payed for a few minutes of her attention. She even taught her son how to dance as if they were at a ball, making the whole thing a game. And, of course, Locke wholeheartedly believed her; he was in awe of his goddess-like mother, who was so important that people would pay to see her.
Unfortunately, the dream was shattered when she fell sick when he was five years old. She quickly succumbed to syphilis, and Locke was alone. The whorehouse was owned by a gang, and they did not have patience for anyone useless. They took Locke in, but at the price of his freedom. He would work for them for life. They were not kind, and Locke quickly wised up to the realities of the world. He became a thief, because he was too young for any other task-- and there was no other way he could pay for the boss's "protection."
When Locke turned ten years old, it was time that he was properly initiated into the gang. This would symbolize his status as a true member of the gang. Of course, Locke didn't have a choice in the matter; to refuse would mean his death. Unfortunately, it was decided that his initiation would be to burn a certain house down, killing the family of a gang member that had run away.
Locke broke into the house at night, torches in hand. He lit every piece of fabric in the house that he could find-- unfortunately, it spread a bit faster than he had anticipated, and his exit was soon blocked by the flames. The wooden house was quickly engulfed in flames. Smoke filled the room, and the ceiling began to collapse. Almost blind from the smoke stinging his eyes, his whole world seemed to consist of the roar of the fire, the screams of the dying family, and the searing heat in his lungs. Finally, Locke dashed through the fire and out the door, receiving severe burns all over his body that would remain with him for life.
Despite his wounds, the mission was successful, and Locke became a full-fledged member. As he grew older, he rose up in the gang until he was trusted with regular executions. However, Locke prefers the use of his blade; his best friend Perth gifted him with a stolen sword and taught him how to fight over the years, but Locke made up a style all his own. One might say that his quick footwork is reminiscent of a dance.
Trivia:
Fires make him rather nervous due to childhood trauma. His hobbies include practicing his sword fighting technique, working out, and dancing. He is borderline illiterate. He makes most of his money doing odd jobs such as construction work, but he also works for his gang by "taking care" of troublesome members.
