Astriana was quiet as he spoke, she supposed he really could not control who the dragons chose, that was up to them. She also thought about her brother on the sand and knew she would not want him to be badly hurt because he couldn't hear any warnings of danger.

"I doubt his hearing will get any better, in fact, it has only gotten worse. When my twin brother went to train, he had to come back earlier than planned because we had learned the extent of our little brother's hearing problems. So if anything, I doubt he will ever hear again,"Astri spoke, a lump forming in her throat.

R'yn swallowed at her words. So the boy had no chance of recovery. He didn't know what to tell her. He reached out for Gereth. Ask Calith if she can summon Tic here? he asked, flashing the bronze a mental image of his surroundings. Tell her there are new candidates with an inquiry concerning a deaf sibling. The girl seems upset. "I'm sorry, I didn't intend to upset you."

Gereth obliged. The bronze never avoided a chance to speak with his mate. Mine wants yours. He says to tell yours that there are two new candidates with questions concerning a deaf child. Mine has already told them that even if the boy were old enough, he would not Impress. The girl is upset. Send yours? You can come, too. We will bathe and soak up the sun.

When Daimon returned -successful- from his mission to find the Weyr's kitchens, he was laden with an armfull of meatrolls and in an unusually good mood. Maybe this switch to Weyr life wouldn't be so bad after all. They certainly seemed to have enough to eat. No one jealously guarded the kitchens here like they did back home (not that that had ever stopped Daimon from stealing food from them before). When he found his way back to his siblings, he called to them and waved. "Hey! Look what I got!" he said, voice uncharacteristically bright.

But it didn't take long for him to realize something was wrong. It was written all over Astri's body language. At once, the bundle dropped from his arms, completely forgotten. "What happened?" he asked to Astriana with concern, before turning on the older rider. "What did you do?" he demanded, moving protectively into the space between T'rel and his sister, hoping to make him back off.

Astriana was trying to fight back tears, but noticed as her brother came back and stood in front of her protectively. The lump in her throat grew bigger, how was she going to tell Daimon, or her little brother for that matter, that Rowan couldn't impress at all? She knew it would upset her twin, so she needed to do this very gently. She laid a soft hand on her brother's shoulder, giving him a soft shake of her head.

"He didn't do anything to me, Daimon. I just found out that those..like our little brother..cannot impress. It would be too dangerous for them, the dragons know it,"she said in a gentle voice, one she only used to those close to her.

R'yn sighed, glancing towards Daimon as the boy returned. He seemed a bi baffled at the question. What had he done? Why, nothing! He'd simply explained that Rowan would, in all probability, not Impress. He opened his mouth to explain, before Astri seemed to come to his rescue. He glanced at the girl apologetically.

"I'm sorry," he said. "He's welcome to stay at the Weyr, of course. There are many crafts he can practice if he so chooses. He can still be the best he can be." Without a dragon. Making him no different than the countless holders, and crafters without one.

"The 'best he can be'?" Daimon echoed back the word with an icy tone. In all likelyhood, the weyrleader had meant well, but unfortuantely, his words just incensed the teen more. "Rowan already has a craft." he said defiantly, "What, you think just because he can't hear, he can't do anything else either?" Daimon asked angrily, but he was clearly just upset. He continued to look at R'yn for an explanation. "What do you mean he can't impress? Why shouldn't he?"

But then, turning his back on the weyrleader for now, he turned to his sister. "Astri, we'd be right there with him. It wouldn't be that dangerous."

Astriana mentally winced at R'yn's choice of words, knowing that would just upset her brother more. She heard Daimon speak and it confirmed her suspicions and she was quiet a moment. Both twins knew their brother was capable of lots of things, but maybe this just wasn't something that could be helped for once. Then her brother turned to her and she sighed softly.

"I know we would be there for him, brother, but we can't always be there for him. If we become dragon riders, we would be given different tasks, so we couldn't always watch out for him. And I doubt there is much we could do to protect him when it comes to an rampaging baby dragon,"Astri replied.

R'yn was puzzled by Daimon's tone, and it showed. What he had meant to comfort the boy with, was now being used against him. "I just meant--no! Shards, he's eight, isn't he? I didn't know you'd picked a craft for him! He's certainly too young to apprentice out!" He stared at the boy for a long moment, before shaking his head. "That's not what I said. Crafters, holders, traders, they make it very well without dragons. Not everyone on Pern can Impress. He'll be no different than the other crafters."

He sighed. Why shouldn't Rowan Impress? He could throw out all reasoning and allow the boy to stand--but no, that would be cruel. "As I told your sister, your brother wouldn't be able to Impress. This isn't my choice, you know. Its always been the dragons'. Your sister's right, you couldn't always be there for him. You'd be in a different wing. You'd be busy with drills, threadfall--" he trailed off.

Gereth's wants you presence, Calith calmly spoke from her weyrledge. Ticene looked up from her records with a small sigh. She'd put Tiry in the creche today specifically so she could get this record of the latest tithes done. She could have left it, but with Hyweth the way she was she preferred to do it herself and let Joleen spent more time with the dragon. What had decided to come up that needed her attention so immediately?

There are concerns about a deaf child and two new candidates. I presume they wish him to stand. A smaller sigh escaped the woman. There must be something up if R'yn wanted her help with that. Her weyrmate could sometimes become a bit flustered in delicate situations. She couldn't really leave him to deal with it alone.

Alright, tell Gereth that I'll be there shortly.

Shortly after Ticene was approaching the area where Calith had said they were. The gold had winged ahead to try and get a look at the situation herself. Tic took in the scene as she approached. The two new candidates she recognized as newcomers to the Weyr, along with the younger one. She knew the youngster was deaf. Ticene needed to know about all the residence of the Weyr and when one had a disability they were brought to her attention so that appropriate measures could be taken.

"Hello there," Ticene said, smiling pleasantly at the gathering. Tension seemed to be running high, the girl looking awfully tearful and the older boy looking more than a little confrontational. She knew R'yn enough to know he wouldn't have actively provoked the boy, but still laid a hand on the man's shoulder, just as a reassurance. "Seems a bit emotionally charged here."

"It's dangerous, sure. It's dangerous for us too. Why should it matter that Rowan is deaf?" He was still turned towards Astri, but glanced at R'yn with annoyance. More poorly chosen words. Daimon's hands tightened. "We didn't 'pick a craft for him', he's capable of making his own decision. And- he's eleven!" said Daimon, surprised by R'yn's statement. Rowan was a little small for his age, sure. But.. shells! Eight?

He was about to say more, but he was distracted by a gold dragon flying overhead. When the woman appeared a moment later, he didn't think it was a coincidence. He may not have know much about rider's knots and Weyr ranks, but he knew that one of the people that flew a gold dragon was in charge of the Weyr. And sure, there was more than one gold dragon, but Daimon was rarely that lucky. He looked back at R'yn. Would that make him the weyrleader, then?

Unfortunately, Daimon had never been one to shy away from authority. He turned towards R'yn. The dragon's choice, huh? He folded his arms stubbornly "I don't believe you." he said, simply. "I don't believe that dragons would be that cruel. I just think you don't want him to Stand because you don't think he'd make a good dragon rider. And you're wrong. Rowan would make a great rider. He can ride runners better than anyone. You don't have to hear to be able to do that."

Astriana wished she had an answer for her brother, but she kind of wondered that herself. Yes, it was dangerous for Rowan, but wasn't this all just as dangerous for them too? She saw a shadow appear and she looked up to see a gold rider come down where they were. She gulped lightly, could this be the Weyrwoman of this Weyr? If it was, what would she do to them for all of this?

"Hello Ma'am. Daimon, maybe it would be better if we go let off steam somewhere. You know, I could use your help getting some more beasts and things,"Astri suggested. She knew her brother had no problem going toe to toe with authority and she didn't need that right after they had gotten here.

(Sorry about that! I was told eight! xD )

There was an obvious amount of relief as R'yn spotted his weyrmate. The tention in his shoulders eased at her touch, and he flashed her a quick smile. He hoped he conveyed the proper message in that look. A deep graditude was present: he wasn't quite sure how he would have handled the situation without her. Just when he'd begun to hope the girl would see reason, Daimon had returned with an attitude he'd failed to foresee.

"Its dangerous for all, but more for him. Riders communicate verbally during drills. During Threadfall." R'yn hesitated, glancing towards Ticene awkwardly. "Does he want to be a dragonrider? He has a craft, you said. And he makes his own decisions." While unsure whether Rowan would understand, he hoped to make Daimon do so. "I wouldn't lie to you," another glance towards Ticene, "Dragons have always chosen their riders. No one knows the reason, or how they know who theirs is, moments after hatching. And dragons never remember long enough to tell us."

He gave a barely visible wince at the comparison between runners and dragons. He had never liked runners: though he'd promised Tiry one more than once.

Astriana's greeting was rewarded with a kind smile, Daimon's ignoring of her did not go unnoticed. "A dragon is no runner," she said in a cool tone, Ticene had no intention of getting into an argument with this young man. "Riding a dragon is more than just the physical act of sitting on one. A rider can and most probably will be called upon in emergencies or to settle disputes whilst their dragon is not even there. How will your brother handle people coming to him in a panic and yelling at him expecting help?" Ticene often had reports back from riders visiting holds that had been dragged into disputes between the holders. Dragonriders were meant to represent the law on Pern, as well as fight thread.

Has anyone asked him what he wants? Calith put in from her ledge as she looked down at the group.

I don't know, love. I'm sure they'll have spoken to him about it before.

Then I will ask him, the dragon stated, turning her eyes toward the youth. Hello little one, do not be afraid. Look up and you will see me. Calith was unsure if he had noticed her and did not want the lad spooked by suddenly having someone speak in his head. She had scolded enough candidates on the sand to have adjusted to speaking to young people and she liked little ones. Riders were spoken to far less often.

"I understand you want what is best for your brother, but you have to accept that it is more dangerous for him not being able to hear. There are many times when all your senses are needed. That is why riders who lose their senses for one reason or another are given honourable discharge." If a rider lost a limb, an eye or any other sense then they were a danger to the wing and needed to be removed for the safety of everyone else. Rowan would never be able to graduate in the first place if he was deemed unsafe to join a wing. "I have never seen a dragon choose someone that wasn't in full control of their abilities and I have seen a lot of dragons impress. It is far too dangerous for your brother to stand, however if a dragon were shelled that wanted your brother it would find him, impression from the stands is not unheard of." Hopefully that would placate the older lad. Ticene never expected Rowan to impress, but if it made Daimon and Astriana feel better with the idea that a dragon would find him in the stands then so be it. She could see why R'yn had been having trouble up until now and she really didn't expect it to end here, but if she was lucky it might.
