Malta was curled up with Poecileth on her dragon's bed, reading a book as she snuggled up close to the dragon's warm haunch. Poecileth read along with her, the two of them enjoying their rare free time together.
Malta couldn't have thought of anything more she would want in life besides a good book and her partner, but she had the twins too. She could hear them clattering about in the kitchen- they would be making Lunch and dinner today. It was a special treat after a rough week for the both of them. Work had been rough, as it was during the start of winter, and there had been a lot of changes to the house in that time.

At first, Malta had wondered why her partner had suggested that she move to the downstairs lair. But, when she had finished moving her things downstairs, she realized it had been yet another excellent idea of Poecileth's. She had been the one to take her own room- the house had plenty of rooms when they had bought it, and she had wanted to try privacy.

But ever since she had started sleeping with the dragon again, the days had gotten easier. It was as if things were as it should be. She heard the knock at the door and looked up, glasses glinting, from her book.
"Oh!" she said, surprised, wiggling out of the wrapping of the dragon's tail and leaving the book nearby, "I wonder who that could be?"

She gave Poecileth a kiss on the nose. "I'll go get it." she said, humming cheerfully as she went to open the door.

Poecileth gave Malta an answering nuzzle as she stood up to go to the door.
she said. She wondered who could be calling at this hour on a free day. Then, suddenly, something clicked in her brain. A bit of uneasy yellow filtered into her widening eyes as she remembered.
The nightmare was due to arrive soon. Today, possibly.
Oh damn. She had been so absorbed in work and secrecy that she hadn't mentioned it to her partner at all.
she said, uncoiling herself from her wonderfully comfortable and warm position and moving towards the front door,

Abjad

The tall, dark, and handsome inverted djinni nightmare prepared to knock again, growing annoyed at how long it was taking to answer a simple door. He knew it was unreasonable to expect that a door be opened immediately upon knocking, but his anticipation of his new life made him antsy. Open up already... he thought at the door, raising his hand to knock once more.

The door opened before he could knock again, and Abjad, caught in a surprised posture of pre knocking, quickly put his hand behind his back and regained composure, looking down at the person who opened it with regal disdain. And down. And down.

Goodness, the human was short. And chubby. Nothing wrong with chubby, he supposed, but she wore it awkwardly, as she wore her glasses and... all her clothes, pretty much. She was ugly in a cute sort of way, and at least she had a decent if drab color scheme going for her. He looked her up and down briefly.

"Ah. Hello." he said finally. He didn't know what he had been expecting from his guardian, so he wasn't sure if he was dissappointed or just slightly deflated. "Are you Poecileth?" he asked, hoping he had pronounced the name correctly.

Malta

"Oh, uh..." Malta looked up, and up, into the man... she thought it was a man...'s eyes. They were empty, with a small, glowing blue spark. Half his face and body was covered with some sort of ooze, and it unnerved her. She shuddered, but her good mood was unchanged.

"No, no I'm not..." she looked behind her as the dragon reached the door. "Poe? Did you order something?" she asked the dragon. He seemed to be carrying something... a package of some sort.

Poecileth
Poecileth gently nudged her human aside, snaking her head around to face the tall and handsome young man. Or, rather, young nightmare.
she said, watching him, she asked, her eyes shimmering, briefly, yellow. She should have told Malta sooner, but the weeks had gone so quickly.

"Mih? Pass the potatoes." said Talaas, cooking with the fury of a demon. Her brother and her were cooking lunch, and oh what a lunch they would cook. It would be a lunch to be remembered through the ages. Amazing, incredible, and delicious. "Are they boiled?"

"Potatoes passed." said Mihiil, handing her the steaming tubers, "Boiled and skinned, like you asked, sis." He waited for her next request. He knew what they would be, exactly. They were making special super healthy Mashed Potatoes with cheese and veggies. Talaas had been on a health-versions-of-unhealthy-food thing lately. Honestly, Mihiil couldn't see what was so unhealthy about mashed potatoes. They were tasty, what was the problem? But he wasn't going to argue with his sister when she thought she was right.

"Good, good." said Talaas, beginning to mush the softened tubers into something pastelike, "Okay salt - just a little, some cheese, and the cream." she said, patting a spot on the counter next to her, "Put them there."

Mihiil smirked good naturedly as he briskly set the already set-aside items next to his sister. "Lowfat cream, like you wanted."

"Good, good." said Talaas, adding ingredients and mashing the potatos in earnest. "Could you go out and ask Ma and Poe how much cheese they want? And how much of the potato Poe will have?" Poecileth's food was already there, and it was a rack of... meat. Neither twin had any idea what had made the meat, but the meat was there and it was a lot of it.

"Sure." said Mihiil. He liked taking orders from his sister. She knew what she was doing and how she wanted it done, and it was less effort to do the thing than to plan it.
Personally, he thought that the rack of meat was from a big dinosaur bird thing, but in the end, Poe would eat it all anyway. He washed his hands and skulked out of the kitchen, leisurely looking for his guardians. Poecileth's tail wasn't hard to find, and he could see that they were at the door. Huh. He must not have heard the doorbell ring. Vaguely curious, and also wanting to carry out his official mission, he walked over to the door and peered around Poecileth's bulk.

Something about the dripping man at the door gave the desire manifest pause, and he looked at the stranger with mild unease. Not alarm, though. There was no need for alarm.

Mihiil stood back and waited for his guardians to be free to ask his important potato-related question.

"... Oh." Abjad was a little surprised to learn that the very big creature was his guardian... so what was the human? A pet? Another manifest? Definitely not a nightmare, not that he cared. He was done with that crowd, and good riddance.

Oh. Partner. Wait, what did she mean by that?

He decided not to think too hard about these things. "Well then." he was relieved that his guardian had no hands to shake - handshakes were a bit awkward when you dripped freakish nightmare ooze from one side. Instead, he stood politely at attention. "I am Abjad. And you were expecting me." it was not a question. "Would you mind showing me to my rooms? If they are ready, of course." he tried to be less snobbish for the first impression, but he really wanted to get moved in and settled somewhere other than the dorms.

"I do hate to intrude so..." he added. Apologies that weren't actually apologies, and politeness that wasn't politeness, made good covers or masks for his ascerbic attitude, which he knew he had and didn't care about beyond the first impression. He knew what he was doing. "But I would like to be rid of the burden of my luggage. You understand, of course."

Malta

Malta looked at the tall man-thing, confused. "Expecting? Rooms?" she looked up at Poecileth, confused, "Poe... what?"

Poecileth

Poecileth murmured, her eyes taking on a slightly yellow edge. Malta was not taking it well, she said, noticing Mihiil, she gave Mihiil a brief nuzzle before moving aside to let Abjad in.

Malta

Malta did as she was told, but gave Poecileth a positively ashen look as she picked up the bags. she asked through their bond. This was unexpected and sudden and she was starting to hyperventilate and... and... she whimpered mentally, reaching out for her dragon's well of calm.

Poecileth

putting it off <... neglecting to do so. I adopted Abjad from the Dreamery. He'll be staying in your rooms.>

Malta

Malta squeaked, both in thought and in voice, staring at Poecileth, before glancing almost apologetically at Abjad. "I've... got them. Follow me?" she said in a tremulous voice. She said, starting to lead Abjad to the stairs, she whined frantically over the bond, shaking a little as she started to make her way up the stairs.

Poecileth

This was... new. Malta was upset. she felt a little guilty that she hadn't consulted her human before doing this. She had a bad feeling about how Malta would take the news that he was a nightmare.

Likely, not well.

she said, turning to the Desire boy, of course he did - he always did - but she could sense a question on his mind.

Talaas liked to cook. It was a pretty consistent degree of like, too, unlike most of her passions. She was having a ball making dinner in the kitchen.

However, she was stuck. She needed the answer to her question. She needed it now. So that she could properly prepare the potatoes. It was a simple question: how much potato would Poe have? How many vegetables to go with her meat?

What was taking Mihiil so long?!

"Hmm?' said Mihiil, distracted by watching the other spooky manifest going up the stairs. "Oh, yeah." that question. He'd better ask it before Talaas got pissed. "We were wondering... How much cheese and potato you and Malta would want..." He looked back at where Abjad was dissappearing into the room that had once been Malta's. "Wait, so he's living with us?" he said, frowning, though he was more puzzled than unhappy. "What sort of manifest is he?"

Poecileth said, nuzzling the top of his head lovingly, she fished around for the name, Her eyes flickered briefly yellow, she mentally whispered, glancing back up at the room, Poecileth rose, moving back towards her lair at the bottom of the stairs, she curled up, sitting straight up regally, her back gracefully arched. she watched Mihiil,

A... a Nightmare?! Mihiil had heard about those. “Right.” he said hastily, running off back to the kitchen. “Tal!” he said breathlessly as he burst in through the door.

Talaas gave him an odd look. “What could potatoes do to get you so excited?” she asked, ironically, especially since she was the twin that got excited all the time.

“Not potatoes!” he said, “We have a new manifest living with us! Its a nightmare! He's going to be in Malta's room!”

“Wait...” Talaas blinked, “A nightmare?!” she felt a tremor inside of her, a need to be devoted to something growing with every second. “In... our... house?” It would be about the nightmare, sure, but was she for or against them?

“Yes!” Mihiil said, impatiently, “He was big and tall and had black drippy stuff along his side and he was handsome and well dressed!”

“Hmm.” Talaas made her decision. “I assume he's staying?”

“Yes! Living here! In Malta's room!”

“Well, then. He should be fed, because thats what we do to guests...” her hands clenched on her wooden spoon, “For tonight. Only.”

“Tal...” Mihiil could sense the emotions building in his sister, “Don't do this. Mama will be upset.”

“Let her be! Guest he may be, but I refuse to live with an abomination.” said Talaas forcefully. “How much did Poecileth want?” she said, turning to her potatoes.

“Oh, um... a full serving.” he said, uneasily.

“All right.” She glanced at her twin, “Don't be fooled by the nightmare, no matter how nice he looks.” she warned, “We saw that he was the enemy, and he is.” She remembered the storm that had rent their home, and the aftermath. “And he will be stopped.”

“Oh...” Mihiil had a bad feeling that this wasn't the reaction that Poecileth had wanted. He wanted her to get what she wanted, because he wanted her to be happy – her and his sister. He didn't think Talaas would be happy. “Okay then.” She still had his support, though. The whole way. “We'll stop him.” From doing what, Mihiil had no idea.

Abjad looked around the room. It was empty and plain, save for a bed and a desk. Abjad didn't know what he had been expecting, but he supposed this was all right. It was not at all like the dullness of the dorms – this was a blank slate, ready for him to do to it as he pleased. He took his bag from Malta's hands. “I will take it from here.” he said. He didn't want her to go through what few things he had – it was a possessiveness thing. He was sure the meek creature wouldn't steal anything, but... still.

Malta nodded, dumbly. When she had left the room, it had been almost essentially gutted, it's things moved downstairs to Poe's lair. Poe had done this. Poe had set this all up, had been planning it for a long time. And hadn't told her. “Uh. There's... dinner. Downstairs.” she offered haltingly, unbelievingly.

“Ah.” Abjad was hungry, “Thank you.” he said, fixing her with his disturbing gaze.

Malta took the hint and left the room, hurrying downstairs to her dragon. They would need to talk. Now.
