Brian was becoming an annoying s**t. Brian in older episodes was fun, but about half the jokes coming from Brian in newer episodes was like, "Wow, ******** that guy"
And that was worse than a new, jersey-shore dog with equally bad jokes? I know Brian will be back so the episode (just watched it) wasn't too bad for me but just kinda shocking that they would actually show him that bloodied up. Haven't watched FG in a long time...I'm a big fan of the first few seasons...so seeing something that digitally graphic on FG was just new for me.
Maybe, actually. Vinny being what he is has room for improvement rather than a clear sign of degradation in character value.
What would be more interesting is if they went without any pet for a while until Stewie goes full "This shall not stand! I have to get him back, he's my one friend!" and then he goes on whatever quest he needs to rebuild the time machine, or maybe pick up an alternate universe Brian and yeah. Nothing says they HAVE to have Brian there in every episode and it could make for some more interesting writing.
Brian's death is not good writing, Vinny is superfluous, but the point is that they did it and maybe some better writing will come from it. Doubtful, but there's room for it still.
