You get some customization on your gravatars on-site, but your avatars for the most part are not in the same overall kind of style you can find with either Gaia or Syndrone oddly enough, really. I am working to be as honest as possible while also hoping the strengths are reasonably represented.
It can't hurt to have a look, I guess. I'll stop by, later on.
Okay then, feel free to say hi to the head of site and let everyone know that 'Cross found you', okay?
I can''t p;romise that I'll be getting an account, mind you. But I'll have a look. Before I even do that though, it seems I may be getting ahead of myself... Are there guilds?
At the moment no, I have no idea if it'll be possible in the proboards forums in general, but like I said, most of everyone, even the head-of-site can be trusted, my word and I will not lie.
I appreciate the information, but I regret to inform you that it really doesn't meet my needs, right now. It's starting to look like Syndrone is my best option for the immediate...

I don't relish the thought of creating a new account elsewhere, but if the alternative is essentially abandoning the guild when you all leave... *shrug* I'll follow.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with other avatar sites (although I had a look at Syndrone), so I have no suggestions to make.

I really appreciate that. It means a lot to me and the guild just wouldn't be the same without you. Unfortunately, as hard as it is for me to believe, this seemingly incredibly easy formula of user created forums seems to be unique in all the world on Gaia, so at least for now, here we are and here we'll stay, as little joy as it brings me to continue being a user on this site.

I know what you mean. I wouldn't be surprised if there are guild-like solutions on some forum sites, but the added requirement of avatars narrrows the field so much that we're pretty much left with Gaia.
Still, I do enjoy my guilds here, so I've decided to ignore the economic bullshit and just focus on them. Happily, it looks like one of my good friends is back from a lonnnnng hiatus, so I have another very good reason to stay. (Side-note: I ought to introduce you two; I think you'd get along swimmingly. razz)

I'm always happy to meet new friends. I'd welcome the introduction. On a side-note, it wasn't just distaste that drives me. They say you can''t build a site on whales* alone. Given how much they've alienated the non-whales, it seems that they've made a decision that has failed others. On top of that, word has it that the whales are leaving, right along with so many others. So if you can't build a site on whales, but they are trying all the same, and the whales are leaving, just what is the site built on? Couple this knowledge with the fact that there was another website that I hear being talked about (though the name presently escapes me) that exhibited this kind of behavior and then a few weeks later announced that they'd be shutting down. For them, this exact same this was a desperation gambit... That failed. Nothing is certain at this point, but it seems fair to likely that the Gaiapocalypse just may be upon us. With the way they treat their users, I'd be a little surprised if there weren't signs of a fairly immediate end, this time next year.
[snize=9]*"Whales" being users that spend a great deal of money all at once, with some regularity, rather than make small purchases now and again. People that bought the halos, for instance.

Hmm. That is a grim idea. I mean, I don't know that I'd ever planned to stay on Gaia forever, but it'll be 10 years for me in January, and I would be very sad if the site shut down for good. It makes sense, though; the current site just isn't sustainable, as you pointed out. I wonder if, when things hit the fan, they'll just go offline entirely, or if they'll try and scale things back? Like, leave the forums intact, but stop supporting any of the games or flash spaces, update the shops infrequently (if at all), etc. I imagine it would be the former, not the latter, but I can always hope. razz Although, in a way, that might be worse, drawing out the inevitable demise even longer. xp

I can assure you that they won't. Mamarita (since banned from that account) has confronted... (I can't remember the mod's name, but he was the appropriate person to address) about guilds. This time he didn't lie, he didn't sugar-coat, and he didn't misdirect. He was very up-front and very clear. I wish that I had the exact wording for you, but you would have to see Suzareigna for that... In fact...

Do you still have the exact words saved anywhere about what they said about guilds? Anyway, the gist of it was what they had already shown us, again and again. He said that they are no longer interested in doing anything that didn't immediate and directly pay for itself. The word "profit" wasn't used, but I think it's pretty clear that they also aren't interested in breaking even, if they just have something as small, insubstantial and meaningless like a "better community" to show for it. So unless they find some way to subsidize it and pass the cost onto us, you can forget about guilds ever being updated. And events where there were only one or two items for cash? A thing of the past. Free achievements, that cost nothing but time, effort, and perhaps a little gold (which really also used to just be "time")? Gone. We are presently in the age of the almost-daily flash sale and the seemingly bi-weekly Flynn's Booty, ie gold for sale. Oh, that's right. If there are any items that you want you'll want to get them now or just live without. If you've seen the marketplace, you already know what I mean. The term "Flynnflation"apply describes just how completely out of control things are in that regard. I like how they said that they wanted to make it possible for new users to catch up. It's a very cute way of giving all of us 03ers (and to a lesser extent, 04ers, 05ers, etc) the finger and telling us that the decade of loyalty that some of us provided (and the near decade, provided by others) most certainly has a pricetag and there is not a single thing that we own, any of us, that they can't get just by having an open wallet. ...I suppose that turned into a bit of tirade but I used to love this place so much. This is, afterall, where I built the home that I have kept through countless different moves and an awful lot of life events. It's a bit hard not to get a bit emotional, even as used to it as I've become. My tenth Gaiaversary is coming up next month, as well as the guild's seventh anniversary. I don't know if I will see the eleventh, at least not from Gaia. I know what they've said about how well they're doing, but lying would be among the least shitty things that they've done to their user base, lately. I just hope that they tell us before the shut down, entirely. Some of us have some goodbyes to offer, some forwarding e-addresses to give, and maybe even some text to save.

Hi there. About asking me the who said whats.. here it is. Narumi Misuhara- the project leader- and basically head of Gaia wrote in his journal for all to read:
Then and Now Whoa! been a while ride the past few months. XD Thought I'd give a project update to the projects I announced at the beginning of the year. You can see that entry here. This biggest change between then and now is that all projects going forward must earn their production cost. This is nothing new in the world of business but is new to Gaia. This does not mean you won't be able to do anything without gcash, it does mean that you should expect most projects to have some gcash element to them.
Guilds At the beginning of the year I had hoped to start production on it in Q3, which is around now, unfortunately because of the amount of time production would take (about 3 months) and because it needs to make back it's cost. I can't justify the project. Here is where I could use the communities help. If you have ideas on cool features that guilds could have that you would be willing to pay some gcash to use please post about them in SF, or send me a PM or reply to this journal. Remember these would need to be sustainable ideas so something like a kick-starter would not be an option. Otherwise, feel free to pass your ideas along!
Now, I highlighted something a bit out of context in this journal about "you won't be able to do anything without gcash[/i]" because as it turns out, that's the only truthful part of his journal entry in the first paragraph. Let's face it, now, EVERYTHING on Gaia revolved around the g-damned Gaia Cash, the Halloween event did, all the sales do, even the games now do. So, pardon my language, but ******** GAIA AND GAIA CASH. And I hope Jason Loia, COO, and Gary Schofield CEO and all their flunkies rot in hell for what they have done to Gaia.
And to all the original people who started Gaia and left this past year- Thank goodness they left before the SSGaia sank after hitting the iceberg Schofield-Loia.
