Step 3: Training Win: 50-100 (-5 for Drakeins, -10 for Vlidean demerit, +20 for trying to capture this creature four times before, +5 for help) 40-100 Rolled: 1. Wat. Outcome: Failure Words:
"Bird training?" Sam questioned as Sue showed him the book. Her enthusiasm never ceased to amaze and please him. No one else had ever taken quite as much interest in his taming endeavors as Sue did. Unfortunately, her book... Well, he hated to admit that (being a Drakein and all) he wasn't very strong of a reader, but the Vlidean seemed comfortable enough around them by now, so maybe it was time to start training it... Of course, it seemed more mammal than bird to Sam, so he wasn't entirely sure how useful a bird training book would be. But it was all they had for now, so he might as well give it a shot. As long as Sueno could read it and tell him what to do, anyways. He'd just have to be optimistic. Like Sue. "Let's see what's inside, then." Samael agreed with a short nod. Birds carried messages, so maybe that was a chapter in the book! Or was that too advanced to start off with...? The Vlidean was too big to perch on his shoulder like the birds in the pictures did... Not that it was much of a percher, anyway...

Sueno, being 5 (and just turned at that) had poor reading skills. But she bravely struggled through the book and tried her best to understand it. What she could read were the small words.. which there weren't too much of. Sighing, she offered it to Sameal to read. "Ah cain't read it Sameal! Is got too much big words in it and not enough pictures!" Puzzling over what she should do now, Sueno picked up the Vlidean and plopped it into her lap so she could preen it. It was a soothing thing to her, and she often preened her parents wings in the evenings. "Hrm. What'd ya want to train it tah do Sameal? Maybe if we start there we'll see if it works?"

Sam seemed a bit taken aback as Sue offered him the book. Well... Maybe he could at least give reading a shot. He leaned back on his haunches so he could use his forepaws to scrape up a few pages to turn. It seemed impossible to flip just a single page even the light breeze passing through flipped through it rather quick. The Drakein made a mental note that once he could walk into stores and buy things like a two-legger, he'd obtain a damnable 'Reading for Idiots' book, or something of the like. But for now, he only shook his head. "Let's just see if we can teach it to fetch. That's kind of like delivering messages." Samael shrugged. The Vlidean seemed to be enjoying Sue's attention, ruffling its wings and letting out soft chirps of appreciation.
When Sam chucked a small pebble across the clearing, in hopes that the little beast would chase it, it only scowled at the Drakein and stared skeptically at him. Samael huffed. It knew what he wanted. He knew it did. But it stayed in Sue's lap nonetheless.

Nodding agreement at Sameals statement, Sueno looked down at the pump of feathers in her lap that refused to go chase after the pebble. "Go fetch birdy!" She bounced her legs up and down, but all that did was make the Vlidean chortle and flap it's wings. The rest of the afternoon she and Sameal tried to get it to bring something back. But when they finally got the point across to go get something, the beast just thought they were playing a game and kept the object and making them chase it. After a tiring hour of chasing the Vlidean, Sueno sat down. "Ah dinna think it's a-going to fetch fer us Sameal," she sighed and laid back on the ground, arms spread wide. Looking up at the videan who landed by her and nibbled at her hair. "Why're ye so stubborn? We just wanna teach ye!"

Sam sighed. He hated to admit it, but Sue was probably right. This Vlidean just didn't seem interested in learning anything they had to teach it. Even worse, was that Sam had no use for a Vlidean that couldn't be helpful... His clanmates probably wouldn't tolerate such a noisy creature around the lair unless it had an actual purpose. But he'd told the little Orderite girl that this thing would be well cared for once he captured it. Would it even know what to do in the wild now if he let it go...? He quirked his head as the flashy beast nibbled playfully at Sue. It loved to be petted and preened by her and seemed to enjoy pretty much any attention she gave it. While it was less fond of Sam. Of course, he didn't have hands to pet with, so maybe that's what his problem was. "It really likes you, Sue." Samael told her with a tiny smile.

Sueno looked up at Sameal with a huge grin. "He does doesn't he! Can Ah keep him?" She asked with big innocent eyes pleading. The Vlidean wasn't too loud, so certainly her mother would allow it right? Now that she'd learned something about the creature, she was certain she could raise it! Though she'd have to keep it away from the barn where they stashed the few animals they had. At least until he (at least she thought the Vlidean was a he) settled down and the animals got used to him.
Maybe she'd ask her big brother to make a separate little nest for him?

Samael was loathe to say yes to that pleading gaze. The Vlidean would get big quickly, then it wouldn't be able to sit in her lap for rubs and pets. Plus, it could accidentally step on her and hurt her... Yes, it seemed tame enough, but was it really? Then again, who was he to say no? The way Sue talked, it seemed like her mother would never allow her to keep such a creature, and if she did, well... That was a parent's decision. "You'll have to ask your Ma..." Sam told her hesitantly. "And promise to take really good care of him." Since he wasn't sure how long the creature would be able to fend for itself if it was completely released back into the wild... But, as he's said before, he really didn't have a use for just a pet... he gave her a tiny smile, just barely showing his pointed teeth. "I'm sure you'll make a great caretaker, though, Sue."

Sueno squeaked her happiness and hugged teh Vlidean who squacked at his feathers being ruffled. "Thank-ie Sameal! Ah'll take good care of him! Ah'm sure Ma will let him stay when she see's how well behaved Videe is!" She instantly dubbed him Videe now that he was 'hers.' She alwasy tried to not name things unless she was going to keep them. It made partign harder if you gave them a name. "Ah promise to take good care of him!" She gave Sameal a big smile. That afternoon she headed home and her mother, Liopa, was horrified to see what her daughter had been playing with. A noisy Vlidean of all things! Why couldn't she keep the quiet boukens or Uruu's instead? It had to be a rowdy noisy pest.. but Sueno's big eyes and the quiet way the Vlidean sat by her persuaded Liopa that perhaps they should let her try to keep this animal. And if it turned out that the Vlidean was tamed, all was good. And if not? Perhaps they could discretely take it away.. or maybe it would make a good meal...

'Videe.' Kids were cute. They just were, no matter the race. "No problem." Sam murmured, smiling softly at Sue. With any luck, the thing would only grow more attached to her and less inclined to hurt her. Maybe it would even pick up a few commands over the years. Satisfied with his decision and with his attempts at taming an obnoxious creature like a Vlidean, Sam headed off toward his home on Eowyn. His clan-mates would probably thank him for failing this attempt...
