Hey guys, thought I'd make another DQ thread this time. So yeah, I actually had DQ VIII for quite a long time... and decided to play it again. I've been so occupied with other stuff and different games that is keeping me busy that I rarely get a chance to play my PS2 anymore. But yeah, I finally got things set up again and I'm finally giving it another shot or at least when I'm able to play it... But yeah I'm totally enjoying it a lot!
But anyways, so there was something I was wondering about the skills system for DQVIII from the beginning of the game. From what I understand once any of the characters gain a level, you can distribute points in certain weapon mastery levels and learn skills at certain levels etc. I did spot a few areas and towns in the game where there's this person that could tell you about them and how much you need to learn something new. Sooo with that said, does anyone here know if you distributed more skill points than necessary does it somehow skip that particular skill you want to learn and you're not able to learn it again? Or it doesn't matter as long as you passed that point where you can learn the skill?I hope I don't sound silly asking about this even though I got pretty far into VIII already. sweatdrop I mostly wanted to know because I'd like to be a little cautious if I messed up someplace.. >.<

If you reach the amount of skill points in any given skill area necessary for a skill, you learn it. No danger of missing anything as long as you put enough points in to get the skill in the first place.
Don't spread yourself too thin, though. It is best to choose two and maybe a bit of a third area to focus on. Some skill sets are pretty much better than others, too. Though since you are partway into the game already, you've probably already picked some areas of focus.

Ah, my favorite dragon quest. I just put skill points into whatever weapon I have at the moment and the specials (courage, charisma, sex appeal, and whatever yangus has)

Ah I see, as long as you distribute enough points you'll get the skill. Interesting... That's good to know. I was kinda clueless on it at first. XD
I think for the hero I focused on Spears and Courage. For Yangus I mostly went with Axes and Humanity. I tried out Whips, a little bit of staves, and Sex Appeal for Jessica. And for Angelo I gave him some points in swords, some staves and Charisma. When I actually began the game, I started giving skill points in every area little by little. And every now and then I'd change my mind on what weapon skill I wanted that specific character to excel in. It does seem easier to focus on one skill at a time now that I think about it...

I don't know if it was from playing DQIX first, but I was always over-meticulous about my skill distributing, and always planned for the future. Keeping in mind, I still have yet to beat DQVIII (almost done!), I found that making one of your characters use the same weapon type for the entire game, and reflecting your points that way made the game easy for me. No point in making the hero a lance and sword master if he's going to be holding a lance for the entire game, right? In the end, I was able to make my characters really good at what they were doing early on. For me, I made the hero stick with lances for the entire game, Yangus with axes for Metal Slime hunting, Jessica with whips for crowd control, and Angelo with swords.. because an RPG isn't an RPG without a sword user, and Shamshir of Light is too good an early accessible weapon to pass up. Of course, I neglected staves, but I found crowd control to be more important anyway.

So I thought I'd bring this back up again, since recently I found my copy of DQ VIII again! Which I thought was gone forever... But it was because of my negligence in the end, bleh.. >.>
But anyways yeah, I currently got back into to playing it again. And I'm loving it again! I finished up the Cash and Carrie quest not too long ago. I got a 600 token reward from them, which I totally just blew off almost all of it cause of my bad gambling. lol
So I was wondering, how does everyone feel about gambling at the casinos? Are they really worth doing for those prizes? Or is it better off not really bothering with them much? Or maybe it's something fun to just kill off time and whatnot? I'm just curious about it. xd
