The Story
The Legend Behind The Herd

The story of the Vanaras came together in several ways. The first part comes from the original legend of the Cerynei, which can be found here.

The second part of the story can be found in the quoted text, below.

The Vanaras
Born of a shared idea, the Vanaras were formed by Calixte, Kenton, and Trovin in the image of the original Cerynei Herd. After his homeland was ravaged by wildfires, Kenton journeyed to the Kawani Lands, where he met a mare and had three children by her. They went their separate ways, but he had a small role in the foals' lives. Eventually, he happened upon Calixte, who had just come off of a trading ship from Greece. Severely dehydrated and having already been confronted by a cursed skinwalker, Calixte made a companion of the traveling Cerynei.

After a time, an inkling began to grow in Cali's mind - Kenton mentioned his old herd frequently, and she knew that he yearned for a purpose, for something to protect as he had guarded the original herd. This inkling finally manifested when the pair happened upon Kenton's son, Trovin. Calixte shared her idea with him, and with the blessing of Trovin's mother, the trio set off to find others of their kind. Their mission was to form a herd where any and all of Cerynei heritage were welcome, temporarily or permanently: those whose homes had been consumed by the fires, those who had been born in the Kawani Lands, and those who had no memory of their previous lives.

Once the herd grew large enough, Calixte and Kenton found a place to settle it. It was a pretty place, on the edge of a wide grassy plain and sheltered by a great forest. Freshwater was abundant, and there was enough room for a herd that would eventually be thirty-strong. They live there now, in what is commonly called the Herdlands. They called themselves "The Vanaras" - deer in an ancient language. They accomplished their mission: the Herdlands are now a haven for many Cerynei and their mates, as well as those who would not fit anywhere else.

Herd Totem
Antlers
User Image
Antlers are the totem of the Vanaras - they represent the strength and elegance of the Cerynei. The sharp edges show their intelligence, and the soft fuzz that coats them in the spring represents their gentleness.

Herd Rules
Follow them or beware.

The these rules are law while one is in the Herdlands. Follow them or face retribution.

In Character Rules: (Your soquili follows these.)

  • Everyone is equal. Insinuating otherwise will not be tolerated.
  • Chores will be assigned after either a growth or membership ceremony. Assignments are based on preference and need. Assignments are as follows: Advisors; Apprentices; Gatherers; Guards: Patrol, Scout; Healers; Instructors; Messengers; Nannies (Nursemaids/Midwives); Storytellers/Entertainers.
  • Basic, non-specific chores (cleaning, etc.) will be taken care of by all members in equal measure.
  • Advisors, Apprentices, and Instructors will be assigned based on prowess/knowledge of specific skills.
  • Physical fighting will not be tolerated. Exception: Defensive/offensive combat training and sparring.
  • Disputes will settle themselves unless the issue is brought before the herd leaders.
  • The word of the Alpha & Protector is law.

Out of Character Rules: (You, the owner, follow these.)

  • Follow the Gaia's rules, Soquili's rules, and these ones.
  • No drama.
  • This herd is not roleplay-required. We love roleplay, but it is not a requirement for joining. We do require, however, that you post a profile to become a full member. Read more about it here & here.
  • Remember: what happens in RP stays in RP. It should not affect how you and another owner feel toward each other.

Herd Culture
Things You Should Know

User Image
(Map marked by junglerunner.)

Please keep the following points in mind when considering membership.

The Herdlands:

  • The Herdlands consist of the following components:
    >> Nesting Grounds: A section of the plains, the Nesting Grounds are close enough to the forest that anyone there can take shelter in the trees on extremely short notice. Each nest differs in size based on the size of the family - a single soquili can have a nest to itself. The biggest nest, currently, is that of Calixte, Kenton, their five children, and Oke (room enough for eight or more soquili).
    >> Meeting Tree: A large, unidentified species of tree under which many of the herd leaders can be found at differing times of day.
    >> The Forest: The Vanaras have marked off a large section of forest as their own. The Gatherers' Clearings, several fruit groves, and many large flower beds can be found where the forest meets the plain. There's also a small stream, which is tributary to the river than cuts through the plain.
  • The Herdlands are a haven; they should be treated with respect by all. The herd works hard to maintain them and keep them habitable. It is up to the individual whether or not they wish to do their part. So far, everyone is working together and there have been no bumps in the road.
  • Any and all outsiders will be treated the same way upon first being spotted entering the Herdlands: if spotted by a patrol or other member of the herd's guard, either a scout, messenger, or the spotter him/herself will alert the Protector. A greeting party will be sent out to meet the outsider, and they will be either welcomed, questioned, or told to leave. If the outsider is spotted by a member of the herd that is not part of the guard, it is highly recommended that they do not approach the outsider. Though they may, safety is the first priority, and safety cannot be guaranteed through that course of action. It is preferred that members instead alert the guard.

The Vanaras:

  • The herd is headed by Calixte, Kenton, and Fayearan. They work as a team to stay on top of things.
  • The Vanaras are good neighbors - they either keep to themselves or try to make friendly alliances with neighboring herds.
  • The Vanaras is a very commitment-oriented herd. They approve of lifematings more so than they do of flings. However, a member will never be shunned due to their choices when it comes to relationships.
  • Members are allowed to believe whatever they want when it comes to religion, though most ceremonies traditionally adhere to the belief of the Cerynei legend.

Miscellaneous:

  • The herd name is used as follows: "The Vanaras... herd" - singular; the entire herd. "Vanaras" - plural; several (or all) members. "Vanara" - singular; one member, male or female.
  • The Vanaras may also be referred as "the Cerynei Herd" - which was their previous, unofficial name.

Requirements for Joining

Have a soquili that's ready to join? Please read the following requirements.
Once you have read them, you may post here with your joining application!

Requirements for Regular Membership:

  • Your soquili must display some part of the Cerynei phenotype: fluffy ears, antlers, cloven hooves (Unicorn, Kirin, Kalona, and Cerynei templates accepted), and/or a deer-like tail.
  • If your soquili does not display the Cerynei phenotype, they must be a known descendent of a current or ex-member. If they have a Cerynei ancestor who was not a member, they will most likely be taken in on good faith.
  • Background plotting is required to the following extent: you must figure out how your soquili finds out about/happens upon the herd and you must pick their chore/rank assignment.
  • Once you have posted your application and it has been approved, post your soquili's membership profile here.

Requirements for Honorary Membership:

  • Your soquili does not display the Cerynei phenotype, nor are they related to any current or ex-members or a non-member Cerynei.
  • Background plotting is required to the following extent: you must figure out how your soquili finds out about/happens upon the herd. After that, the highest-ranking herd members present will interview your soquili about their past and their intent upon joining the herd. If they are evaluated as having good intent, they are welcomed into the herd as an "honorary" member and given a chore/assignment.
  • Once you have posted your application and it has been approved, post your soquili's membership profile here.

Herd Plots
Current Events & Happenings

Please see this thread for more details on herd-wide plots.

Whole Herd: Events that include the entire herd.

  • Purewalker plot: Purewalkers Rishy and Frostbite are stalking Calixte, Kenton, and family. Plots may extend to the whole herd. For now, the following "rules" are in place:
    >> Defensive and offensive combat training has become mandatory for the majority of the herd. Opting out is not recommended, but possible.
    >> Patrols and scouts are on high alert for any suspicious activity.
    >> Foals are not allowed in the forest unless accompanied by a trained adult or parent.

Plots With Other Herds:

  • None at the moment.
  • Current allies: Possibly Imladris.

Individual Plots Affecting the Herd:

  • At some point, Calixte and Kenton will attempt to find the lost Cerynei Lands. They will take a party of volunteers with them, but some will be left behind to take care of the herd.
  • Any coming of age/lifemating ceremonies that need to be taken care of should contact: Calixte (Mahogany Sunset).

Frequently Answered Questions

Check here if you have a question - if it's not answered, please post here!

  • What if my soquili doesn't have Cerynei characteristics and I want them to join?
    >> If they have Cerynei ancestors (ICly or OoCly) that they know of that were Cerynei or part-Cerynei, your soquili will most likely be taken in on good faith as a Cerynei. If they don't know of any Cerynei ancestors and don't have any Cerynei characteristics, they can apply for Honorary Membership. Travelers can also be granted Honorary Membership, especially if they have a beneficial presence (healers, merchants, allies, etc).

  • Will my Honorary Member ever be a regular member?
    >> Yes. If they adapt swiftly to the herds' ways, they can find themselves a regular member in less than a few (IC) months if they have no attachment to any of the other members. If your soquili is mated to a long-time member of the herd and has no obvious intentions of leaving the herd, it could take less than a month. If your soquili has children in the herd and shows no signs of wanting to leave, the same applies. It ultimately all depends on their commitment and investment in the herd.

  • More here when we get more questions! :3
