Prologue
Everything's bad. All bad, no good. Blinded so I couldn't see where the world was headed. Couldn't find the right path. Couldn't even find the door to get out of the hole I was buried in. When they finally cut through the thick doors of the bunker I'd made, they found a hollow shell of a man. They found hope destroyed. They knew then that they were lost. Who would ever save them now that their prophet had gone mad and gouged out his eyes? How could they find their way?
Don't ask me. I couldn't even find the door.

Chapter One
The rain pattered lightly on the tent. I lay there on my bunk, wondering if the water would collect in a pool and cause the tent to cave in, when something caught my attention. My name. Two people were conversing quietly near the mouth of the tent. They were discussing my blindness and saying I was too far gone, too insane, to be of any use. Funny thing about being blind - your hearing gets better.
I exhaled loudly in annoyance. There was a momentary pause, then, "Well, the chief says there might be someone who can heal his eyes. You know, make him be able to see again."
"How?" Skepticism, I noted.
"Some voodoo junk or something. I don't know." Discomfort. More silence. I could almost feel them shudder at the thought. "I wish this damned rain would stop." I immediately lost interest and amused myself by thinking of the Latin names for the plants that grew outside my window at the monastery. I went through them, one by one, for nearly half an hour until I came up short. The last one was a blank. I scrunched my face in concentration.
"Yeah," one of the men continued, "and they sent me earlier to look for edible vegetation. But I couldn't tell what was poisonous or not. A complete waste of time sending me, and I got soaked. It'll take weeks for me to dry properly." Poison! The answer came readily to my lips. "Hyoscyamus niger," I suddenly exclaimed. One of the men cursed, clearly startled. "Damn psycho."
Their footsteps retreated, squelching in the mud. I passed the time by thinking up new kinds of animals in impossibly vivid and bright colors before falling into a strange, ever changing dream.
When I woke again, I remembered nothing of it.

"I don't want you to worry."
"I'm not worried."
I heard the captain sigh. "It's okay to be worried." In my head, I rolled my eyes. He continued. "Now, I don't know much about this Batya woman -"
"Batya means daughter of god." Silence. Then, "Um, sure. As I was saying, I don't know much of this Batya, but I hear she can do things. Things that no one is supposed to be able to do. Like heal your eyes, for instance." I nodded my understanding. "I'm not really sure I want my sight back, though, sir," I said quietly as I heard him push back his chair and stand. I heard him sigh. I couldn't tell if it was in sympathy or annoyance.
"Look, son. You told the doctors you did it to get rid of the visions. And you didn't, did you? You still see them."
"Yes, sir."
"Then that's that. We'll all have a much easier time of it once you're able to see again." He left me sitting there, wondering what the world would look like now...
