Cian wandered around Hogwarts rather aimlessly. He would be hanging out with his many friends if they weren't all either studying or in detention. He could have been studying himself, but he didn't really feel like sitting around trying to read a dusty old book in the library. Instead he went over his notes as he walked around the hallways.

He found if he did something active while trying to memorize facts he was able to recall them better later on. It seemed rather strange to his friends but Cian didn't really care. If it worked fro him it didn't matter what other people thought.

When his feet grew tired of walking, like they sometimes did when he wandered aimlessly, he sat down on a bench and put his paper away. He pulled out his penny whistle from his pocket and began to play a lively little melody.

Meredith wandered aimless through the halls of Hogwarts. The home she grew up in was a large manor with a North Wing and a South Wing. She was rather proud of it. Of course she knew that Hogwarts was a grand castle, but she wasn't prepared for just how enormous it was. Now she had to admit -to herself and no one else- that she was thoroughly and completely lost. Had she come from this way, or that way? She could swear the infirmary was back that way, so that wasn't the direction she needed. There was absolutely no one to be seen in any of the halls that she turned on. Not that she would have asked anyone for help had she found someone.

She began to feel very nervous about the situation. She had places she needed to be, and what if she was wandering for hours and she still couldn't find her way back to her common room after dark!? She would be in so much trouble, if she got expelled her father would just kill her!

When she turned the next corner, the one with the painting of a dapper young prince grinning from ear to ear, she saw a boy sitting on a bench playing a penny whistle. It was a strange sight after so many halls with nary a soul to be seen. He was just sitting there on the bench playing a jaunty tune for all the mice and dust mites and no one else! It was so surreal after all her nervousness that she had to laugh for a second.

Then she felt bad, he could take that the wrong way. "Oh please don't stop playing!" she told him. She was so pleased to see another person she started singing along with his music. "Oh my name it is Nell and the truth for to tell | I come from Cootehill which I'll never deny"

Cian had closed his eyes when he had started to play so he didn't see the girl when she sat down next to him. However he did get that feeling that he was no longer alone. So when she spoke she didn't startle him as much as she may have thought.

Cian turned slightly and opened his eyes. He merely winked at her and kept on playing. He was rather delighted when she began to sing along with his playing. He hadn't thought that he'd meet someone who knew this song!

Finally once the song was over, Cian put the penny whistle down and smiled at her. "You have a pretty voice," He told her and then offered his hand. "I'm Cian, what's your name?"

Meredith finished the song with a smile on her face. It was great to just sit and sing with someone, and she hadn't heard that song in a long time. She often sang with her sister, but they've both been so busy since coming to Hogwarts that one was always in class when the other had free time.

She liked to sing a lot, and she was glad to hear the boy liked her voice. Cian, he said his name was. A lovely name. When he offered her his hand she took it and have him a firm handshake.

"I'm Meredith, Meredith St. Christopher. What are you doing up here all by yourself?" She knew he could ask her the same question, but she was genuinely curious. Besdies, maybe he would tell her exactly where "here" was.

Cian was glad to see that the song had made the blonde girl happy. It had been awhile since he had played his penny whistle for such a small audience. Normally he had several people around when he was playing and they tended to jostle him. That was a bit annoying, but he was pretty much used to it.

Cian was glad she didn't have a limp handshake, or that she didn't offer him her hand like those "dainty" girls tended to. That just was embarrassing when girls expected him to kiss their hands. Not to mention a bit stuck up.

"That's a beautiful name," Cian replied, and then looked around to see just "where" was. He blinked. Crap..he had no clue where he was! That wasn't good. Dinner started in less than half an hour! How was he supposed to find his way back?

He glanced over at her and bit his bottom lip and realized that she had asked because she had no idea where she was as well. Cian burst out laughing at this. "Well a what a fine fix we've put ourselves into," he said letting his irish accent come out. "We're both lost together! At least we're not alone, eh?"

She blushed ever so slightly and looked down politely for a brief second. "Thank you." He seemed like a polite boy, but she didn't often get many compliments, and here he had complimented her twice in a row. She watched as he took a quick inventory of his surroundings, and she could see it in his face as it dawned on him that he had as much clue where he was as she did!

Meredith breathed a sigh of relief when she realized that Cian had no idea where he was either. It was a mixed blessing, on the one hand she was no closer to finding her way back to the parts of the castle she knew. On the other hand, at least she was no longer wandering the castle alone and a little frightened.

"Well I was trying to find my way back to the great hall before dinner," She told him, "I turned left out of the library but I couldn't find any stairs that headed back down so I went up a flight in hopes of finding a different set of stairs." She shrugged, indicating that she hadn't found any. "And it just got worse from there."

She gave him a look that she hoped was a lot more confident than she really felt. "I think if we head that way we might be going back in the right direction. Would you like to try it?"

Cian was a bit surprised to see that his compliment had embarrassed her. He turned his gaze away so she could have a private moment to get over it. He knew how annoying it was for people to intently look at you and wait for you to get over such things. It usually just made it worse in the long run.

Cian wasn't sure what to say back to her softly murmured, 'thank you'. He ran his hand through his hair and looked around. He had a sudden thought that perhaps if he ran through his notes that might help him remember things he had gone by in his wandering. He reached for his paper when she began to speak. He kept it in his hand and turned his attention back to her so she didn't think he was ignoring her.

"Ah, well I've gotten lost more than I can number." he replied with a small shake of his head and his eyes rather mirthful about the whole thing. "I somehow manage to find me way back pretty easily."

Cian rather liked the look of her slightly dark blue eyes and could see she was trying to muster up confidence. "Sure, if need be I can refer to me notes. I find I oft remember things when I go back over what I was doing at the time."

Meredith appreciated that Cian gave her a moment, but she was quick to put it past her. She wanted him, and everyone else as well, to see her as a strong and independent person, as her father would want from her. She was a St. Christopher after all, she had a reputation to uphold. St. Christopher was a proud family name, and although her grandparents weren't happy that her mother was of mixed-blood her father was always apt to try and please them. All the members of the St. Christopher name were expected to honor the family name.

Cian sounded like he had been lost along these halls many times. She had not gotten lost once yet, but she recalled what her mother used to tell her. "The best way to learn your way around a place is to get lost in it." She always did like that saying, and somehow getting lost suddenly felt something like an adventure.

"Hmm, that's a really good idea actually. What are you studying?" Meredith suddenly wondered if he was in any of her classes, she hoped she wasn't supposed to remember his face.

Cian was rather glad when she finished her crying, it always made him uncomfortable to see girls upset. Most seemed to go on and on and it made him always feel helpless. At least this girl seemed a bit stronger than most, having had her cry and then wiping her face off without looking too annoyed that a boy had caught her crying.

Cian stood up from the bench and smoothed out his hair, hoping it didn't look too untidy. He often forgot to brush his hair. He glanced down at his uniform and frowned. How had his shirt gotten that messed up? The buttons were all a jumble and not even lined up properly. He sighed, put his penny whistle in his trouser pocket and fixed the messed up buttons. Thank goodness that the professors hadn't noticed it or he would have lost more points for Gryffindor.

He really need to work getting up on time in the morning and making sure to lay clothes out ahead of time. He was always making plans to change his morning routine but it never seemed to get past the planning stage. He really did need to take some action towards changing that and soon.

"I was going over my 'History of Magic' notes. I have trouble remembering dates.." he supplied looking over at her. "I recall reading about the war in 1200 when I came past those paintings over there." He pointed to several paintings which were empty of their figures. "I wish I knew where they went off to." He added with a frown. "Maybe to that painting of the great hall feast? Do painting wizards get hungry?" He asked her curiously.

Meredith watched as Cian adjusted the buttons on his shirt. She hadn't noticed how disheveled his attire was while he was sitting down. She had been too busy singing with him and enjoying his music. Now that he was standing it was quite apparent. She wondered what he spent his mornings doing if it wasn't getting neat and clean. He probably practiced his music, or something else really cool that she couldn't think of.

She was always too busy in the morning making sure everything was laid out and planned for the day ahead. She had big hopes and dreams, she wanted to work for the Ministry of Magic someday. She wanted to climb the rungs and become someone important. It didn't especially matter who.

“Do painting wizards get hungry?” He asked her. She stared at him blinking for a second, and then laughed. “You know, I don't know.” She said, pondering. “I suppose they could, they seem to feel loads of other stuff.”

He had a sense of wonder about him that was really refreshing, and now she really wanted to know if painting wizards got hungry! “You know we could try to find them and ask. And if we're lucky they'll remember you coming by and they can point us in the direction you came from!”
