A frost covers the ground and the tops of baskets. And the small life inside one basket was restless. His legs and wings tried to stretch within the confines of the woven reeds but found his prison limiting.

He didn't remember thinking such things before.

A soft whisper of something . . . a sound, no, a voice, touched his velvet ear. The ear twitched. A wing tried to spread. A hoof moved to kick. The basket rocked.

Then it stilled. 'Soon,' the voice whispered. 'Soon, but not yet.' And so the colt waited. His face set to a grumpy scowl that no one saw. Soon indeed. Voice or no voice, this dark cocoon would not hold him much longer.

"The faint illusionary shadows seemed to make the basket crack, chip, and slowly crumble away before it returned to its whole self. How odd."

Had the foal inside been awake to experience it, she would have been able to peer through the cracks and chips in her basket to see her parents and the world around her. But she slept fitfully instead, having odd dreams and tossing and turning every now and then. Her dreams had no context as of yet. They were full of shapes and shadows and movement, but nothing took definite form. None of the dream matter blobs in her mind could be trusted as reality, they were black and white and fuzzy and she wanted very much to wake up. But it wasn't time yet. She slept more and more restlessly, knowing the time was coming closer. Soon she would escape from these delicate walls, from these strange visions of movement...

((Will edit when I've chosen an RP color for her.))

Hisses and grumbles emerged from the soft-colored basket, the foal within struggling to get away from the slithering thing entangling its legs. After a few moments, the thing had found its way to the filly's face. Gooooooooo, it hissed. Huuuuuuungryyyyyyy. Whining, the foal tried to turn away, only to find she was too big for her long head to move within her home made of basket ash. In her attempt, the top wiggled loose, a crack of blinding light shining through. Both her and the snake cowered from it, but there was no turning back. For them, it was time.

Wings ruffled against the chill of the air as the stallion rested. He'd taken over watch of the baskets for the full night, and was exhausted. They had be jostling about more and more frequently it seemed, and he knew what that meant. Soon, the three tiny foals that were placed into their protective homes would emerge, larger and strong enough to face the world. Cooper hadn't seen the children before they were placed into the baskets, and if Riri had, she gave no hints as to what the twisted tunnel had brought. But every night, shadows danced around the hidden children, always showing the same thing. One apparition showed the wickedest grin he'd ever seen before disappearing into the moonlight. Another made the most yellow basket appear to crack, which had worried the stallion and caused him to inspect it the first few times he'd seen it. And the third had something slither around its base. That, along with the hissing that often emerged from inside, scared him the most, but Riri assured him that the foal inside would be all right. He was drifting off absent-mindedly, unaware of the snake's head poking out of one of the baskets.

User Image Rinkini didn't know how she felt, didn't know what to do... everything had changed and happened so quickly that it was quickly turning into a constant mystery as to what was most important. Her dull coloured eyes turned to look at Cooper, she was glad she had come back, sure that she wouldn't have been able to do this alone... she was also thankful that Chandra had been around and helped her deliver the babies, after all... they weren't exactly normal.

As her eyes drifted over the makeshift woven baskets she knew all too well how true that statement had been. If her mother had been surprised at her having a cat like tail she was almost positive that she would have even more surprise in store for her. Between the whispers and the hisses... and she was pretty sure odd movement from one of the baskets... all meant that she was about to have her hooves very full and very busy. What was she meant to do? What was she meant to think? She really didn't know what was for the best right now.

Her gaze drifted to Cooper once more and she gulped before leaning over and nudging him slightly, they needed to talk... about what she wasn't sure... but they did need to talk. "Cooper?" Her voice came out much harsher than she had anticipated so she tried again, her tone more gentle, "Cooper... are you awake?" What was he to her now? Was he just the father of her children or something to her as well? She didn't know, and in all honesty it was too early to decide that either way... but there was something else on her mind right now. "Cooper...." Her voice lowered to a whisper and she glanced at the three baskets, jumping a little at what she thought was... a snake? But she blinked and it seemed... gone? Or was it? She shuddered at the thought.

Panic was starting to settle in her again, the things that had caused her to run while pregnant (and had probably started her labour) seeming to crash into her all at once.....

The foal rocked. He was upset with the voice. He didn't want to wait. But . . . he waited, sullen.

The voice curled, silent, next to his head. He knew it wanted to escape, to be free of him. So why did it tell him to wait?

'Not yet, patience. Wait. Soon.' The crooning voice whispered as his rocking of his basket prison became too hard. 'Wait. Listen. Learn. Not the first. Wait.'

That was odd and generally unhelpful. The colt didn't understand. Didn't want to understand. Didn't want to wait. But with a humphed sigh, he settled. Settled and listened.

She twitched awake and was fearful of the dark of the basket. She had no idea where she was for a moment. She peered out of one of the cracks that formed in her basket. She saw a tiny amount of the world around her and was excited until the crack reformed and blocked her view, leaving her in the dark once again.

She felt cramped, more so than she had been when she had first gone to sleep. She wanted out, but she could feel the warmth of her siblings beside her and knew that they were still in their baskets. If they weren't ready, she certainly wasn't. All the same she wiggled slightly. She began bouncing her basket against those of her siblings, trying to get one of them to peek out before her and giggling quietly to herself while doing so.

The child whined some more from within her basket. Gooooo, urged the snake. Tiiiiiiime. Small wings stuck flat to her face, the filly nudged the loosened top of the basket a little. It was so cold, but before she could shrink back into the darkness, her attached companion made its way out of the crack. Reluctantly, she lifted her head for the first time, which felt so incredibly heavy. The movement caused the lid of the basket to fall, exposing the foal's body to the cold. Her eyes remained closed and she remained curled in the basket, waiting for someone to notice.

Cooper mumbled something in his sleep and moved slightly at the mare's touch. Hearing her voice caused the stallion to mumble again. He hadn't slept for quite some time, and only woke up the third time he heard his name. "Mmm?" he managed, his eyes still shut. After a moment, his body shook and he stretched his wings. Another moment passed, and he opened his eyes to look at the mother of his children. "What is it, Riri?" The stallion stretched his wings again, trying to get his blood moving. A small wince crossed the stallion's face as the cold reached where his wings had been nestled against his body. "Are you cold?" He lifted a wing, offering it as a blanket. It didn't even occur to him to check on the baskets. After all, the mare had probably been watching them like a hawk anyway. "Come sleep, I can watch the baskets again." He knew that the mare didn't sleep much, and that when she did, she often woke terrified. He felt it would be rude to ask her too many questions about the dreams, and usually kept his curiosity to himself.

Riri wasn't sure what possessed her but she actually wriggled eagerly into the offered winged blanket, unashamed at her sudden need for comfort.... for something! Still she couldn't bring herself to close her eyes, not for long at least, each time she contemplated it something would jolt her mind back to awareness as if she was being shocked.... now was not the time to sleep, she didn't know how she knew she just.... did.

She took a deep breath and looked over at Cooper, took in his strong and fine features, some might say that his colourings, and even that little winged charm he wore in his hair would be better suited to a mare but the fact was that he carried them well, owned them like he seemed to everything else. She didn't know too much about him but what she had come to understand was that he was a proud stallion... one who did seem genuinely interested in the baskets, and for the moment at least, her. Riri simply didn't want to allow herself to open up too much and then find herself hurt later. She shook her head at the question, "Not cold..." not anymore at least. She let out a huff, the hot air swirling like frosted misted water before her before she continued, "Not able to sleep either..." Sure, her body still hurt after carrying and birthing her three babies -who would have thought that a simple stress releaving one night stand would have lead to three babies? She shook her head and turned to look at the baskets... as she did so she noticed something was off. It took a double take to realise exactly what was off....

"COOPER!" She chirped too loudly in alarm. "One is missing it's lid!" Excitment, nerves and aniticipation mingled together in a heady concoction that filled her senses. She wiggled free of the warmth that was Cooper's wing and covered the small gap between herself and the opened basket.

Tha-dump. Tha-dump. Her heart raced in her chest, so loud she was sure every predator could hear it for miles around. But before too long she was there, looking into the makeshift wicker.... at.... the strangest little girl she had ever met, but instead of fear her face curled in delight. This was her child. HERS! No one could ever steal that fact from her.... "Little one...." As she looked she saw the head wings, noticed the curling snake that seemed to replace a tail and grow from her very spine... she was odd... but sometimes odd was beautiful. She beamed down at the little bundle and reached her nose in to nuzzle at the cold little creature. Lifting her head long enough to look at Cooper she said softly. "Come quickly... the poor little thing is cold..." She looked at the eyes, the snake, the head wings, the colourings that were so distinctively a mix of herself and Cooper that neither of them could deny them. "Gogol....how about we call her Gogol?" Already her attention was on her eldest daughter. "Come on little one... let us get you warm."

The foal listened to the voices outside the basket. He couldn't hear them well, could not understand their meaning. But a moment of loud calling had him curling up in his basket, pulling into himself.

'Now.' The voice next to him whispered, urging.

Oh no, no no. Not now. The colt pulled further in on himself.

Now, it is time. Go, out, be free. It is good out there.

But the foal would not listen to the voice. Instead he strained his ears, listening for the outside world. If only he could understand.

She could sense her mother's presence nearby and wiggled more, waiting for her turn to be greeted by her parents and siblings. It was so close for the time for her to emerge, but she was not comfortable in doing so yet. She continued to bump against her brother's basket, her giggles subsiding. I'm not going out unless you do first. She thought to herself and to her brother, even though he couldn't hear her.

She tried very hard to listen for her other sibling and to her parents, but only heard muffled voices and movements. What little she did hear, she didn't understand yet. What on earth was a Gogol? She wondered.

Murmurs of both excitement and worry came from the filly as she was noticed, her mother wasting no time to reach the basket. Her eyes opened just barely, still not used to the light. The snake slithered about anxiously, hissing curses at its attached host. It was obvious that the creature wanted to be free; to feed. Gogol, now named, strained to understand the words coming from her parents' mouths. Although she'd heard muffled words through her confinement, she had no way to place them. Cooper, she would hear rather often. She placed that word coming from her mother's lips, and assumed it must be something that signaled to her father in some way. And Riri, also, had been heard rather often, from a different voice, which must be her father's. She opened her soft pink eyes a little wider to gaze at the mare's face while the gears within her mind turned, piecing things together as best as it could.

Cooper smiled when the mare took his offer and draped his wing caringly over the mare's back, enjoying her warmth. He nearly nuzzled the mare, but instead sighed worriedly when she said she was unable to sleep. Riri, it seemed, was never able to sleep, at least not well. He only wished to know exactly what ailed her, so perhaps he could help...
The sudden burst of excitement from the mare resting beneath his wing startled the stallion, and it took him a moment to realize exactly what she had said as she scrambled toward the trio of wicker. Not a breath later, he was beside her, his breath heavy with excitement and worry.
He took in the image of the foal as Riri nuzzled it. The wings stuck to its head, as if not ready to be moved, and she had giant ears that resembled her mother's. But that tail... He'd worried something would be wrong, but he supposed he could cope with the snake so long as it posed no threat to his daughter. Cooper smiled at Riri when she offered up the name. He had been studying her and her mother's culture, and almost immediately realized the name to be that of the patron saint of snakes, and therefor, snake charming. "I think Gogol is a wonderful name for a wonderful daughter." His voice was genuine and his smile warm. Careful to avoid the snake, he reached his nose into the basket and nuzzled Gogol. He laid down and draped his wing over the foal as he had its mother, and looked up to the mare. "Surely the others will be close behind. When they are all out, we can find them something to eat."
