When an starlet starts receiving threatening text messages while at a celebrity masked ball, it is
up to ace reporter Daphne Ray & Aspiring Photographer (/ Caterer) Kalbin Rahkal to find this
mystery messager and stop him, before the party's headline read "Murder at the Masque".

Most of the time, Daphne liked her job (she was a hard hitting investigative journalist, getting the story whatever the cost, breaking news no one else wants to touch) but sometimes it sucked. Fact of the matter was, running her own blog didn’t put the Kraft Dinner on the table, and most of the quality newspapers didn’t need freelance reporters. Which was why at times, like right now, she found herself at high society events, stalking celebrities like some kind of paparazzo, hoping to get something dishy should could sell to a gossip rag. Daphne sighed and flicked her long blond hair over her shoulder dejectedly.

She had been able to swing an invite without too much trouble (she knew people who knew people), but she had had to borrow a dress off her friend since this was a theme party and she didn’t have any “carnival” appropriate dressed on hand. Her clutch wasn’t big enough to store her usual notebook, but she had her voice recorder on hand, and it was much subtler than skulking in the corner taking notes. Besides, you needed to be in the middle of the action to get the best stories, and you couldn’t do that if everyone knew you were a reporter.

Forcing a smile, she brushed off a bit of imaginary dust off her shoulders and marched in.

OOC: Hahaha, I am not nearly creative enough.

"It's Bruschetta." said a server to a curious inquiree.

"Perfectly vegan and fresh from the kitchen." added the server, noting expression on the slim, dolled up figure before. It wasn't that the tray-holder recognized the celeb before her, it just seemed as though this esquire was teeming with herbivorous-by-choice. The proof was in her near emptied tray. Whether she takes it or leaves it, I'll have to exchange this for a fuller tray soon. It was customary that the caterers uphold the illusion that there was endless food, just the same as how some stores must look as if they has endless stock.

Kalbin, the server, held the platter at a presentable level for several seconds, before the celeb -whoever she was- plucked a thinly-sliced hard-breaded morsel from it. Kalbin smiled politely and nodded as the guest turned away abruptly, obviously more interested in the glamour and gossip that ensued around her than the staff. But the server was used to it. Giving a quick survey of the crowd she found the perfect moment to slip away into the kitchens. She slided what was left of her tray onto another, then took that one with her, whisking it away into the party ensemble where hopefully it'd be devoured.

The party was a lavished one. Many of the other caterers toted fancier foods, and the beverages were fancier still. A carnival theme meant that there were entertainers set apart from the rest. Adorned with feathers, tastefully bright clothing and specially made masks. Ribbon dancers were sure to be the topic of more than one discussion that night. The fire breathers more or less so. Either way Miss Kalbin Rhakal was not part of that caste. She was server, more specifically wait staff. She did however sport a sequenced black elastic strapped mask, which was provided by her company. She careful that her long black braid didn't swing or obstruct anybody. Normally it didn't, but she always tried to be aware of it. Other times she secretly yearned for something exciting to break from the 'normal' party scene.

"Bruschetta?" she asked, offering it to small visible clusters of people at a time. That was how most hours at most events passed, rather uneventfully.

                          “Bruschetta?”

“Mm, don’t mind if I do.” Daphne said, swiping one of the cracker like snacks off the tray. She was scouting the room still, reading the tensions between the overpaid, oversexed, overpraised morons, trying to figure out who was going to break down first. The sooner she got a story, the sooner she could get out of here. She munched down on the crispy treat and chewed thoughtfully. The food was pretty good though; that was a plus.

Already cliques were starting to form. The writers and designers were off to the side, engaged in actual conversation, the producers stood around the middle, showing off their newest arm candies, and the actors skirted about from group to group, trying to be seen with as many people as possible. None of them looked very interesting though. She turned back to find the masked waitress to grab another bruschetta. The poor woman didn’t look any happier to be here than she was. “Long night?”

Kalbin smiled the way she was expected to, when addressed.

"It's been a pretty standard night so far, nothing out of the ordinary..." she said looking a bit glum. She'd served at this venue before, and recalled that security was top notch there. The drunks and would-be table flippers were dealt with and shown the door. Maybe on a bad day... Kalbin considered.

She could've been easily gotten lost in her thoughts, it weren't for sudden bump from behind. Caught off guard, the server stumbled forward and had recovered pretty quickly. Thanks their handler's quick reflexes the snacks on her tray merely slid to one side. There was no disastrous chain reaction to be had.

"Ah, so sorry!" She apologized to the blonde lady in front of her. "Some people just don't pay attention to where they're going!" She turned to around to perhaps, catch a glimpse of her bumpist, only to to see an anomaly amongst the crowd. A woman, another woman, a brunette was making her way anxiously through the crowd. The lady's eyes roved the room, looking alert and almost on edge. Every so often she'd glance down at something.

Kalbin looked back the blonde, discerning that she too found the party to be a bit lack lustre, and the brunette was just a glint that might possibly lead to something more lucrative. The server tilted her head to towards who'd bumped her, posing a question without actually saying so.
