My mum bought me the Hobbit and the boxed set of the trilogy before anyone ever knew who Tolkien was. I probably read them at least 15 times before they were turned into movies. Beautiful books. The movies were alright. I don't know if I will see The Hobbit or not.

I love the 80's cartoon!

I'll probably make a point to see The Hobbit. I thought the movies were actually very good adaptations. I know a lot of die-hard Tolkein fans were unimpressed, but the reality is that film is a very different medium than literature, and so it's just realistic to expect that some things will be changed, tweaked, or left out completely, for any number of reasons. I thought the films brought the overall story and characters of the books to life on screen very effectively, and I'm looking forward to see how they do with the Hobbit.

Unless you're considerably older than I ever imagined, I very much doubt that. blaugh

Tolkien has been very popular and well-known for well over half a century.

The films did spur a resurgence in his popularity, but loads of kids grew up with The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion ever since their original publication.

I love that cartoon version! I first saw it when my step dad moved in after he married my mom. That was, like, forever ago.

Yeah, I saw it ages ago (presumably dubbed) in French. I should try to track down a copy of the original English version. I remember loving it as a kid.

I wonder if my mum still has the French version. I can't remember if we owned it or rented it. I'll make a note to ask her about it when next we talk.

I did see it, I was a bit disappointed with it though, it was okay for a movie, but the book is much better
and yes, I think the LoTR books are better than the movies too, by far.
I also read them all a few times before the movies came out.
I practically lived in the library and stumbled across them when browsing for a book to read.

What did the rest of you who saw the movie think?
