10/24 -

There are two "BAA" votes in the poll and no reason why. :U No one has to tell me why they disagree but it would be nice to know.

Still working on London's profile. Little brat won't give me a nail-able personality. >3>;

Maybe it would be best to focus on the "sleep enhancement" quality of the fel essence, instead of the psychedelics? Sleepiness, paired with the sheep soul, soul, would be much more interesting and adorable, I think!! oUo

For example, we all know lavender tends to be relaxing and therapeutic, but maybe this lavender lulls people to sleep, they become so relaxed? I might even throw away the "drug aspect" altogether, and just focus on the sleepiness inspired by this lavender. You can do a lot with it!

Hey, Pidgie. If you want to, I can write you up a full critique, but I noticed two kinda worrying things in terms of your Raevan's fel essence and related powers/experiences.

- Psychdedelic drugs are hallucinogenic and alter cognition/memory, mostly, as you already know, but I keep seeing mentions of sleep-based powers in your essence/power descriptions. Why? Psychedelic drugs are rarely, if ever, studied about in terms of actual sleep patterns (its effects on dreams/dream perception is another story), and I can only find really shaky individual evidence of how it effects the time or effort it takes to sleep-- in fact, in many cases, people feel too alert/awake to fall asleep while under the influence of psychedelic drugs. Where's this 'no trouble sleeping' coming from? Why would the 'dream dust/fleece' knock someone out?

- Psychedelic effects have absolutely no dealing with psychosis. Totally different ballparks. If your choice in Fel Essence and you wanting London to experience psychosis are unrelated, I would really like to understand why. Psychosis is an incredibly serious and severe mental illness that has some serious consequences, should your Raevan be diagnosed with it. Despite this, please also keep in mind that individuals with psychosis/who experience psychotic breaks can and still are social, so implying otherwise is a bit misleading.
    - That being said, individuals with psychosis can experience extreme delusions and paranoia, so sociability might be difficult for them. Again, if you would like London to have psychosis or experience psychotic breaks, this is a very important thing to consider.

If you could link me to any articles or information on the contrary, I would love to read them. I'm sorry if this seems very sudden, but I looked over your quest a few times and I couldn't shake off a few questions and curiosities. Thanks for reading, and I hope this was okay.

This isn't sudden at all, it's very welcome, Rook! <3 However, I'm still fiddling with his personality, so a full critique isn't needed just yet. He's being fickle about who he is right now. XD

Alright, so, I've had some pretty bad first hand experience with drugs that alter your memory and cognition, as well as drugs that effect how I sleep. Most of what I've listed is actually from my own experiences. However, I had originally listed the essence as Psychotropic or Psychoactive Lavender, but decided to change it to Psychedelic to make it less of a broad term. Psychoactive drugs encompass all sorts of drugs that do all sorts of things, including stimulants, depressants, euphoriants, and hallucinogens. What I'm working with in this essence is in the realm of Hallucinogenic Psychoactive drugs, which include psychedelics, dissociatives and deliriants. As you said, psychedelics alter cognition and memory, but dissociatives and deliriants add other problems.

Dissociatives are linked to distortions of sight and sound and are known for giving the user a sense of detachment from their environment and themselves. Deliriants are known for causing confusion, sleepwalking, and psychotic episodes.

What I'm aiming to do with his essence, and thus his powers, is take the effects of these drugs and add the sedating effect from the lavender. I suppose he wouldn't be sleeping per say, but be prone to chronic trances where his body is moving around but he's not conscious of it. I imagine the trances feature vivid visual hallucinations as well as auditory, too.

As for the powers that would effect others, I guess it wouldn't knock them out, but make them fall into the trances that he has. I'm trying to explain this the best I can, honestly. XD; Maybe I don't know as much as I thought I did. I can't think of much else other than being put into a trance-like state where they can't control their bodies and they wake up with no memory of it ever happening.

Also, as I said, I have first hand experience with psychosis. I know how difficult it is to be social and I know just how alienating paranoia can be. I want him to be social, but fear himself and his effects on others. Once he finds out what his essence can do, he'll want to do his best to hide it and keep it away from others so he doesn't hurt them. Like, at first he'll be without caution until the first time his powers effect someone else, and then he'll get very self-conscious about it and work hard to make sure it doesn't happen again. This will backfire, of course, but it will make him appear very nervous around others.

Aaaand, I really hope I explained this alright. I'm really bad at making powers, I often feel as though I'm walking into unknown territory. XD; But, I really like this essence and I'd like to see if I can make it work.

I almost didn't see you there, Logue! XD Whoops!

I would totally focus on the sleep part of the lavender, but I'm afraid to because I feel it's too similar to what normal lavender already does. I mean, Fel Essences are supposed to be things that go against nature and do things that aren't normal, so lavender that makes someone extra sleepy or super relaxed seems to lean a little bit to close to the normal realm. Tell me if I'm wrong, though! XD

What I'm aiming for is something that causes dream-like trances that London can eventually become conscious of and "edit" to his liking, which is the theme of the Lucid Dreaming ability. He's physically "awake", but his mind is off in another world which he can eventually learn to control. The other powers are for effecting things outside his mind, though, which I know I need help on. XP; I always find making abilities the hardest thing to do when I make a profile.

Sorry if this is a bother, just figured I'd quote you two with this new idea!

I was thinking, instead of a Psychedelic or Psychotropic Lavender, maybe Lavender that makes someone experience insomnia and have a ton of energy? London wouldn't be sleepy anymore as a result, and his powers would certainly change, but it might be easier to use as an essence if the Lavender only makes the user experience great bursts of energy and insomnia. Let me know what you two think! <3

I do enjoy the play on sleepiness, with the energy boosting! I know we had the reverse coffee beans, which made people super duper sleepy, but this is the opposite so I don't know if it would be a "problem" or not in terms of similarity.

IIII like the idea, I just don't know if it's stepping on any toes...

I mean, it's literally the opposite of the coffee beans one, so I feel like it would be good to go, but a staff member would be able to tell you better than I would. 8< Good luck!!

EDIT: OKAY assuming this isn't an issue with any pre-existing fel essences, I did a quick search on lavender and sleeping and found this little tidbit:

Quote:
Research shows that the scent of lavender eases anxiety and insomnia.

On the night they whiffed the herb, subjects slept more soundly; they also felt more energetic the next morning.

The researchers found that lavender increased slow-wave sleep, the very deep slumber in which the heartbeat slows and muscles relax. During this phase, the brain is thought to organize memory, as well.

I don't know if you wanted to use anything else aside from insomnia for your fel essence, but it would be neat if they not only experienced insomnia, but also more anxiety-related symptoms? Which would be exacerbated by insomnia to begin with, I imagine, but just on a slightly more significant scale thanks to the workings of the fel essence. So they're like "I CANNOT SLEEP AND I'M SUPER STRESSED RIGHT NOW ISN'T LAVENDER LITERALLY SUPPOSED TO HELP BOTH OF THESE THINGS"

heck maybe they're just feeling disoriented, over all, the longer they're around the lavender, so it could affect their overall emotional well-being the longer they're exposed to said fel essence. (Having temporary memory issues, anxious, unable to sleep, chalking all of this up to not being able to sleep in the first place, fidgety, have no idea the lavender they bought/found/grew to begin with was causing all of this)

so like the main focus would be that it causes insomnia, which is the opposite intended effect for lavender, but if you wanted to work any other tidbits into it that you could use to incorporate into the raevan's personality, those would be neat traits to think about!

-throws arms up in air like Kermit- IDK IDK you could work it into your raevan having anxiety issues, like how you wanted him to have been mentally affected by his fel essence beforehand, but this time it's on a much smaller scale and probably easier to work with and write out?? THIS IS ALL PROBABLY DUMB I'M SORRY I TRIED /sobs

Everything you just said makes all the sense and is epic. YOU HELP JUST FINE. -Smooshes- ILU.

In all seriousness, Reverse Coffee Beans is the direct opposite concept to what Manic Lavender would be, which, in turn, makes them different. Both are essences that cause the exact opposite effects of what they intend to do, but don't cause the same effect. My logic dictates that by that definition alone, it would be enough of a difference to use, but like you said, the staff has the final say. ouo

Also, Reverse Coffee Beans was used on a Raevan that's no longer in play, right? I'm not sure.

I feel as though insomnia and anxiety are a step in the right direction to where I want to go with London. Lack of sleep causes irritability and lack of focus, as well as an increased likelihood of mental irregularities like visual hallucinations. I've never had an insomnia episode that lasted more than 40 hours, but I've had friends who have dealt with four days without sleep before. Not being able to sleep for that long can make you crazy, literally. XD

I love the idea of fidgeting and restlessness. I could see London constantly fiddling with his hands or his clothes, or even making sounds with his mouth to compensate for the over-stimulation he's experiencing. ewe I like these ideas.

There were two other things I thought of while I was mulling over this reply today. The first thing was a power that I'd like to share and get some help with. I don't have a name for it, but it deals heavily with Mania and the obsessive amount of creativity it can make someone do. I've heard of, and experienced, days of manic insomnia where all I did was sing, hum, draw, color, or write long lines of absolute dribble just to satiate the whirlwind my mind was going through. You have all of these ideas that seem to bang around in your head and scream at you, which keeps you awake and anxious. You need to get them out, but no matter how much you color, sing, write, whatever, it just doesn't end until you pass out from exhaustion.

Okay, now that I've explained that, here's the actual power. LOL.

The power would stem from a prolonged session of drawing or painting. Something, for example, a butterfly he might be filling in, suddenly floats off the paper or canvas and starts to float around the room. This "living drawing" is tangible and semi-transparent, and "dies" within five minutes of leaving it's space in the drawing or painting, leaving behind it's shape in a piece of paper (Like a cut out of a butterfly) or a splatter of paint (Again, shaped like whatever it was).

Of course, London wouldn't be able to control what became "real" at first and certainly wouldn't be able to control it's movements until he was older, but I think this would be a really neat power to work with. It could get out of control so easily. I do have other stipulations for the power, too. Like, he'd need a huge amount of paper or canvas to try to "bring life" to something large, like a train or a tank. Otherwise, the object would be brought to life as small as he drew it and never grow any larger. That, and, the length of an object's life would never extend over 30 or so minutes once he learns how to control it. This means if he were to send a message to someone on a paper butterfly, it would need to float fast enough to reach them in a specific amount of time before it reverted to it's original state again.

This is all just for pondering. I'm open to power suggestions. I'm really bad at formulating them. XD

The second thing I was thinking about was another soul idea. I know I like the Lamb idea quite a bit, but I've recently fallen in love with a certain fluffy bug called the Venezuelan Poodle Moth. (If you don't like bugs, don't click the spoiler)

I usually don't like bugs, but this thing is tiny, fluffy, and adorable. *w* If no one else is questing it, I might put it right up with the Lamb and debate again. Tiny fluffy moth, FTW.

Anyway, it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm super tired. I look forward to more critiques from everyone! 8D Keep 'em comin', I need to have my brain picked about this!

OHHHH I love dat poodle moth. I don't know if anyone is questing it or not, but if they aren't and you go for it, a moth soul would be RAAAAAAAD

As for the power, I... am not the one to ask about those, ROFL. I would honestly ask Snoof or Roo about those, because I'd hate to say something and have it just be entirely not true or something LOL.

But it sounds like the new essence idea could be a lot of fun for you, and it also sounds like you already have lots of ideas for how it would affect the raevan's personality, which is great for future flatsales if they end up having open-ended essence options! *u*

I'm so excited for future flatsales, I can't wait to see how they're structuring them, now, and what comes out of them! /inflates, floats away into the sky

In which Oliver gets lost in a maze with a very pretty Raevan and an equally pretty woman. (HO-SHI-ZOMBIES! D8 )

(Also, whoever voted for a change in essence entirely, please help me by suggesting things or helping me with powers, okay? Yes? Thank you. ;w; -Lost, so very lost-)
