Ok, I just played some Skyrim and I stepped outside the village and next thing I know I'm being attacked by a dragon all by myself. I died the first time, but I won the second time. Can anybody give me some tips on how to play as a mage and not get killed by dragons and other powerful enemies?

Level up the destruction skill tree until you can get the perk that lets a dual wield overcharge stagger the opponent. Once you have that, it's a matter of stacking magica regeneration items, dodging the dragoon when it's in the air, and when it lands, stagger it, then fire another overcharge off right before it recovers fully sending it back into a stagger, but still allowing you to recover some magica in order to keep going.

That's my strategy for dragons and everything else, and honestly it trolls everything, as long as I can hit the opponent before they get a swing at me.

Another tree that can help is Conjuration, my brother is the mage player in my family and he had both Destruction and Conjuration up, he could blast away all he liked and summoned meat sheilds to keep him safe.

Don't stay still and at least get the double destruction perk

Wards, wards, wards. I made a character into a sort of "white mage," leveling up strictly magic and giving all possible perk points to the restoration tree. When he puts up his Greater Ward, dragons can't touch him. Of course, he's wailing with the Dragonbane with his other hand, but I suppose using destruction magic with your free hand would work just as well.

I built an Ice Mage out of a Breton and was very successful in my first battle with a dragon. The Impact perk truly helps in this fight and the spell Ice Needle is a guaranteed stagger unlike Fire Ball and Lightning Bolt.
Also, keep the HELL away from it and use obstacles as cover. I've used this strategy even against Ice Dragons while shouting LOK VAH KOOR in his face for a sudden but weak stagger.
A dragon's stagger has only one full animation, so no matter what level and strength the stagger is he'll always take the same amount of time to recover.

It's a matter of regen of magic. I prefer to get archmages robes with the dragon priest mask that regenerates magic 100% faster.
Also if you have dawnguard it's best to be on the vampire side to get the rings. After that it's a matter of how fast you can spam a fire ball.

Has anyone tried to use the Staff of Magnus on a dragon?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I noticed that the dragon started to lose health at upon contact with the ray. It was if his magic points were low or none at all.
I wonder if the Staff of Magnus is lightning elemental as well.

the staff of magnus drains the targets magicka until there is no more once that happens it starts to drain the targets health. On my mage file in focused on enchanting and destruction until i got a good enough level to enchant my armor to were destruction spell cost was half of its original cost.

The most important aspect, at least for my characters, has been using the weaknesses to their advantages. I.e. Use fire against an ice dragon. Stagger is also every important.

When crafting a mage, don't pour every level up into magicka; you'll end up with so little health you can't d o s**t, you can cover yourself at lower levels with weak regen items, and as it increases, you won't need to worry too much.

Here's a basic tip that people tend to overlook:

You're a mage, act like it.

Don't use your weak little mage arms to try to b***h slap a dragon down. Use your BRAIN and your MAGIC.

One of my friends annoys the hell out of me because he always makes a "mage" character but then ultimately only tries using weapons like an idiot and complains about dying too often.
