Nalira shook her head, laughing bitterly. Slowly, she moved infront of Chai, all the colour draining from her face. She watched her carefully, muscles frozen, arms hanging limply by her sides. Her eyes burnt with exhaustion and regret, mind racing, chest rising and falling unevenly.
"It's not that I fell." She mumbled, stopping to glance at Ane. "Something terrible could have happened to you. Imagine, for a moment, what could have happened if I hadn't have fallen over, if I had have kept running? The people here, they're not kind, they're not safe. Anyone could have," Pause. "Anything could have happened."
Nalira rubbed a hand over her face, feeling the alien coarseness and gauntness of her skin. Suddenly everything seemed a little too dark, and a little too quiet for comfort. Nalira placed her hands against her chest, every so often clenching them in the rough material of her sweater. It felt somewhat grounding; just as she started to feel her mind slipping back into dangerous thoughts, into her fears and her heart, she'd tighten her fingers around the fabric and find herself able to breathe again.

Chailyn looked at her taking a step back. She looked up at her mother before toddling closer to Nalira. "It's not your fault..." she whispered. She wrapped her arms gently around the older tale giving her a hug. She didn't know what to say but wanted to comfort her friend. She pondered for a moment but luckily her mother spoke up.
"Nalira. There are bad people in the streets but I trust that if you felt Chailyn was in any danger you'd protect her. It was an accident. If I thought you would get my daughter hurt, I'd never let you be alone with her." Anemone knew should should say more but she couldn't think. It was true but there was a bit of doubt that Nala might get Chailyn hurt. She couldn't say that though, not to Nala or Chai. "We trust you Nala," she said. She trusted Nala but still had doubts. Now wasn't the time to press the matter though.
Anemone feared if she said anything much that Nala might go and do something. She didn't know what the girl was doing but she knew it wasn't good. However she didn't want Nalira getting hurt.

This made Nalira want to laugh, but she didn't as she took the smaller Tale into her arms. She was determined to make it this time, to not fall into old habits. She was not alone, she could do this. She needs to do this, if only to prove that nothing has a hold of her, that she was free and in control.
Nalira took a breath. It's not true. She's not in control, not at all. She's holding on by the ends of her goddamned fingertips.
"Thank you." There's no smile in her voice, no acknowledgement that there's any meaning in 'thank you' anymore, only relief. I have control, she reminded herself. The silence lingering in the air took Nalira offguard and severed her thoughts, and it was just enough to send her over the edge. She could feel him near her, so close she could almost taste him.
"We should leave now." She whispered, her stomach clenching. It seemed too frightening, standing there, all of a sudden. Everything was too overwhelming. Soon it would be too much, and she'd seek the only answer she knows.

She smiled at her friend, wishing she was bigger so she could hug Nalira better. When her friend pulled away she titled her head up feeling Nala's attention shift but she wasn't sure what the older tale was looking on. It was probably best she didn't see the man or where she was looking.
"Yes, we should go. We don't want to get cold," Anemone stated. She smiled opening her arms and ushering the two away. She really didn't like the feeling that they were being watched or even the feeling that they were some sort of prey. It seemed like certain people were just waiting to lunge at them. "Why don't we have some hot cocoa at home?" she suggested directing the conversation anywhere.
"Mmm, cocoa! Wouldn't that be great, Nala?"

Nalira grasped Ane's wrist, pulling her back, struggling not to let anything show on her face. She was determined to act as normal as she could, straining to think of some way to let her know that nothing has changed, that everything is okay, that she can trust her without actually saying anything.
"Ane," Hit and miss. "I know this is forward and completely out of the ordinary, but could I possibly borrow some money? I don't usually ask, or even think to ask, but I was down here to buy some – things – but was distracted," She paused to quickly glance at Chai. "And, given my current situation, I can't afford anything." It's strange how Nalira's whole life only lead to be broken into chapters. A chapter of using ends only to bring a new chapter of withdrawel. Will the first chapter ever end? Nalira is suddenly reminded of a carousel.
Round and round and round I go..
"Of course I'll pay you back whenever I can," Nalira continued, pausing to think. "And after, we can have some hot cocoa." She hurried to add, watching Ane carefully.

Every instinct told Ane to say no, except one. If Nalira wanted something with the money and she didn't get it, her motherly instinct told her that Chailyn might be in danger. Although if the tale did get what she wanted, her little one might be in danger too.
She sighed, a hand going into her front pocket. She really shouldn't be doing this. She frowned slightly her fingers relunctant to let go of the twenty-dollar bill. It was a lose-lose situation and she had no choice. She handed it to Nalira, letting it go. Her eyes pleaded with the girl, don't let me regret this.
"Hurry up then. You don't have to pay me back," she whispered silently adding, this time in case the tale asked her again.
