Macaire winces, once more reminded of the warnings of old grannies from his hometown to take care and keep to his station -- well, he's failed that misberably, and look where it's got him! He's gone and talked to a lad whose parents can get employees! Frankly, he's not even sure what that is, but it sounds frightfully fancy, and apparently it means that Eluf won't have to work anymore. "Oh, aye?" He's not sure how to answer this one; in his world, one doesn't leave their parents home until one marries -- goes into the army -- or like Macaire, decides to travel and see the world. The idea of simply 'moving out' is as foreign to him as being able to .. to .. to call a carriage to pick up a friend! " 'Tis good, that?" Then a pause, and because he cannot contain himself and wants desperately to know just how much trouble he's going to be in, he asks what he would ordinarily consider a rude question -- though with the people he grew up around, profession was generally apparent at first glance. "Do ye mind me asking .. what is it they be? Yer family, oi mean."

His own dreams and goals in life... well he decided perhaps those were a bit too silly to share with someone he'd just met. They'd be even sillier to say to his family, more so. Thus, they remained in the confines of his mind, Axe's, and his journal. Reaching the end of the street, where it grew darker, and others were scarcely about, the boy looked out onto the open road further on, that was filing up with darkness and the sounds of night. He used to be afraid of such a daunting task... but since having Axe, his courage had increased even if by a little.
His gaze returned to his company, smile gentle still, attention fully focused. "I do not wish to burden my parents with my presence for too long. I am certain not to be marrying, thus it would be selfish of me to over stay my welcome." he looked to the buck that stood at his side, lifting a slender arm to stroke the sleek black coat affectionately, "And I'd like to make a name for myself, without the assistance of my family's." big goals he had indeed...
Macaire's final question had the boy smile an inch more, and a soft chuckle bubble in his chest, "I'd say it would be easier to show you. But we are horsebreeders. Of the best pedigree's. At least to most of society." curiousity flickered across his soft features, "Are you a rider at all, Macaire? Or have any affinity in animals?"

If he'd spoken to Macaire of his fears -- well, the big man would actually have felt better knowing that he'd once been far more cautious of the dark. After all, he ought to be! He's such a pretty little thing, just begging to be stolen off somewhere! And maybe Eluf didn't mean it that way, or have any idea about the internal distress he was causing his new friend, but he may very well notice when the soldier suddenly relaxes, as if a great weight has been lifted from his shoulders. Horsebreeders! Small gods be praised! He hasn't gone too far off of his station after all! Here he'd been afeared that Eluf was a noble's son, but horsebreeders -- aye, it makes a certain amount of sense. For good horses they'd be paid well, but horse people, animal people, always be set apart, closer to the animals then anybody else. It means it's far less likely he'll be taken to account for approaching Eluf, and if there might be frowns, well, people will mutter about the eccentric nature of those who work with animals -- "Oh, cain't ride," he tells Eluf with cheerful shamelessness. "B'ain't many be big enough, aye, lad? Been 'round mort've calvary, loiked 'em well enough." (Macaire does wonder why Eluf thinks he shan't ever marry -- maybe it has something to do with the horses, or maybe that he isn't from Sunderland. But it's not a question to ask on a first meeting, maybe not even a second. He'll remember that brief comment, though, and ask another time.)

The response on the matter had Eluf's eyes widen slightly, and blink curiously. But... a little giggle soon followed, a small hand lifting to cover his mouth politely. Of course he wasn't laughing at Macaire, just his reasoning was all~ Most horses in town were quite small, usually just for pulling carts, or the like. Giving the large man a once over, Eluf nodded slowly, "I'm certain you'd have no problem with some of our stallion's. They are bred to be large, and strong. Like yourself." he mused gently. A good few, like he'd thought before, were exactly like his new companion; made for battle. Eyeing the other man once more for good measure, he nodded as if finalizing his words. "If you are ever interested, you are more than free to ask for a lesson." For Eluf, it was a very empowering activity. To ride such a magnificent beast, while being so fragile himself... the boy's small bit of confidence seemed to flourish then.
But... he was stalling now. Bashfully, he drew his hands together again, to let nimble fingers fiddle slightly with one another, "Well. I suppose I shall be off, then." he murmured, a faint smile rising on his lips. This made Axe give a snort of approval, looking between the two humans rather intensely... before stepping off to check the coast to be clear further out of town. Glancing to his guardian, then back at Macaire, Eluf blushed softly, "I look forward to seeing you again tomorrow, Macaire." he bowed respectfully to the soldier, daring himself to let his eyes meet the taller figures once he was righted, "Do take care, till then~"

"If the tales be true lad, 'twill be needing those teachings one day." The words are soft, and he'd just as soon that Eluf pass them by -- he hadn't meant to say them, and he shouldn't've said them at all, but they sit there for a moment until Macaire glances away and tries to forget they'd ever come from him. He doesn't want to think about needing to ride a Guardian: he doesn't want to think about war. " .. be ye well, lad. Small gods watch over ye." Macaire bows, and there's a smile at one corner of his mouth, tugging at the scars farther up on his face. He's a clumsier hand at the bow, not being entirely accustomed to such a movement, and something catches him off-guard when Eluf looks up. He seems to go still, staring down at Eluf from closer up as he has not fully straightened from the bow -- he reaches out, like a man in a dream, and slides the palm of his hand along Eluf's soft cheek. Small gods fury. He's so young. So sweet. So full of trust, and -- -- and abruptly, Macaire drops his hand, flushed red, and straightens up completely. "Er. Good night tae ye." Then he turns about, stuffing his hands deep into his pockets and hurrying away before he does something he'd regret. Hell! He's going to get thrown in the goal for this, for certain sure!

With each of their bows taken and given, Eluf was feeling some hesitance in walking away. However... he was completely paralyzed as Macaire locked eyes with him... and as that large hand rose to his plush supple cheek. Instantly, the colour there intensified, but he dare not move nor reject the motion. A shiver nibbles down his spine from the contact, unused to it of course, but not in the slightest revolted. In truth.. entranced.
But it was over as fast as it happened, so it seemed, and soon Macaire's fleeting figure was all that was to be seen. His eyes blinked a few times, snapping out of the trance, "Ma..caire.." he murmured once the other was long gone. The tingle of where that encompassing warm hand had been still remained, cheek growing slightly chilled now that it was no longer there. That stirring returned to his stomach too, and a giddy, school-girl like smile lifted on his features. He couldn't help but smile!
Axe, however, was not pleased in the slightest. Snorting loudly, he approached Eluf, and gave him a rather rough nudging to bring him back to land, turning and situating himself so that the human could mount onto his back with ease. Looking to his steed in question, Eluf continued wearing that blissful expression, hiking up onto the deer's back. Stroking the thick neck affectionately, he softly encouraged Axe to go forward. The buck didn't hesitant with the order given, and the two were off, racing with great speed to the large estate past the fields. He had a lot to write in his journal... and tomorrow couldn't get here sooner.
