The greater expense of male servants was due both to their higher wages and to the eventual luxury tax on male servants. This made male servants less common, but a sign of greater social prestige for their employers. While female servants worked almost exclusively indoors, male servants were divided into indoor and outdoor staff. Beneath the butler, the indoor staff consisted of footmen and pages. They trimmed lamps, carried coal, announced visitors, served at meals, and attended the family when they went out. As their duties included elements of the bodyguard or bouncer, footmen tended to be tall and imposing. Since they dealt with visitors, employers also preferred footmen to be good-looking. Second footman traditionally ran alongside carriages or to obtain items of importance, or raced other footmen of great houses in order to win bets for their masters.
Personal History:
Con was born in Perish town, a settlement for the Hoaks tribe. He was raised by his single mother until the age of 5 when the town was invaded from slavers and they were separated. He has never seen her again. Con, on the other hand, was passed off between various establishments and owners, usually working in the stables, kitchens or as a general servant. He was lucky in his masters when he was growing up, as they did not consider dark-skinned slaves desirable or worthy of their physical contact so he was not used as a body slave.
As Con grew up his collection of skills came in useful, and he became more and more valuable to his masters as a do-it all kinda slave. His speed especially became well known, and more than once he was put in running races, which he won. Each time he won a race his owner at the time would reward him with a sum of money in order to keep him motivated. They assumed he would spend this money as many of his fellows did, drinking. Instead he kept his earnings stashed away, and when he had earned enough to buy his freedom he walked up to his current owner and placed 3 gold crowns into his palm. The sum of his worth. From that day on Con traveled, moving from town to town, working from inn to inn, until, at last, he ended up in Sunderland.
Once in Sunderland Con took up a job with a local minor noble in Palisade, working as a second footman. Not exactly a glamorous job, but one that paid well and seemed somewhat better respected than what Con had been doing up till then. Even when Con deserted his post for a week and came back all roughed up, few had asked questions, assuming he had been mugged and didn't want to talk about it. And a few months later when a fawn appeared in the footman's quarters and started dogging his heels, most paid it no mind. Though that may be due to little Miss Primsley, the 15 year old daughter to Con's employer who had taken a liking to Con and told them to let it be. Well, more than a liking perhaps. He had noticed her doe eyes and paid it no heed, nor her summons for miniscule jobs that she could have gotten the other indoor servants to do. While the little Miss was still dreaming of Con, he was content in the knowledge that his strange doe was safe.
