I have a question... and it is one off topic, kind of... Birth control affects hormone levels in the body, right? My question is how do the ladies on this feel? I mean is there a mental shift or personality?
I've been on birth control (first the patch, now the shot, never tried the pill) for about around a decade now, and I've noticed no shift in personality caused by my birth control. I don't have mood swings, or a decreased libido.

I mean the list of possible risks to her health is scary to say the least, but I can't find anything on how it affects mentally. I ask, cause many drugs affect a person mental status. And I don't see how something that affect hormone levels not being mind effecting, also.
Everyone is different, and experiences different medications differently. The only side effect I've really noticed from my birth control is a measly five-pound weight gain that's easily shaven off. Other people may experience mood changes or an altered state of mind, but I never have.

And are you on them, because a doctor said you had to be, or because you asked for them?
When I first went on birth control, I was around 11- or 12-years-old, and I wasn't sexually active until 17. I couldn't not be on birth control because (and it may be TMI, mind you...) my menstrual cycle was erratic, and too intense, so birth control helped regulate it and calm it down.

Sorry, I know personal questions, and I can understand if you don't want to answer. I am just curious, I have started my internships. And a few of the patients couldn't have been 13 and asking for them. I am starting to wonder if it is just one of those things that is big because "everyone" else is doing them and the girl wants to grow up too quick.
Girls are starting to become more and more sexually active, starting younger and younger. Though to prevent pregnancy may not be their main reason for wanting birth control either, so it's not good to jump to conclusions.
Birth control has many benefits, and can do any of the following:
- Prevents pregnancy
- Reduce menstrual cramps
- Prevents cyst formation
- Menstrual cycle regulation
- Treat acne
- Decrease the risk of anemia
- Protect against Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
- Reduce the risk of symptomatic endometriosis
- Improves fibrocystic breasts
- Improve excess hair (facial or body)
- Helps to prevent osteoporosis
In a girl asking for birth control at the age of 11-13, I would guess it's more than just pregnancy prevention, and also for cycle regulation, acne, and menstrual cramping.
