“I don’t get held down.”

User ImageIf Duncan felt bad for a minute or two about the casually cruel way he’d treated someone just trying to be friendly, he put it aside. He had made his position on having a conversation clear; the guy had kept talking despite it. That was not his fault in any way, and if he’d gotten snappy, well, after the amount of frankly hateful and frustrating thoughts that had been prancing through his mind all morning, what could he do to prevent his own temper? Apparently not much.

Probably another thing he’d gotten from his unknown father, he thought darkly – his grandfather and his uncles had never seemed particularly temperamental or snappish to him. Well, not when they were talking to other people, at any rate. Things were different when it came to him, and hadn’t he been hoping to have things be different here? Fat lot of good changing locations was going to do if Duncan kept dragging the past behind him, he told himself. He had come here for a fresh start. About time he tried to make one.

Picking up his pencil and idly twisting it between his fingers, Duncan fell into a sort of reverie. Only sort of one, though – he deliberately kept his thoughts away from family, but because it wanted to go to family, his mind moved naturally on towards horses. He had a quiet, distant, almost sombre expression on his face as he remembered the only part of home that had really connected with him; he missed them dearly, and he could almost imagine that he heard them here, the sounds of clipping hooves and whickers a counterpoint to the English teacher’s lecture.

He frowned a bit, tilting his head slightly. Why did he also feel like he could almost hear the sound of waves, crashing on a beach somewhere? Maybe not a beach. Maybe the edges of a lake, something like that. Maybe the banks of a river.

A river…

A quiet crack caught his attention and he looked down. The pencil between his fingers had broken, the victim of an unconscious clenching of his fingers. A little shaken, Duncan put the broken pieces down and fumbled another out of his bag. That kind of unknowing violence, even against a pencil, was not like him. Not at all. He knew there was a violent side that lived inside him, but things like that were in everyone, and he could control his.

Right?

Of course, right. This had just been…a moment. Just a moment.

And after all, it was just a pencil.

He put the pieces of the pencil back into his bag, resolutely telling himself it was nothing. He was fine. It had been a moment of temper and he’d had an awful morning, so it was understandable that letting his mind drift back to it had caused a brief outburst.

It was nothing and he was fine. Just fine.

It still took him a moment before he could bring himself to pick up the new pencil and start writing.

𝕤era-- --𝕣ickon

Sera walked briskly away from Ryan once their exchange was done, glancing only once in the corner of her eye to see her "bodyguard" dutifully shadowing her every step. She ground her teeth in irritation as bile churned in the bottom of her stomach, not settling well with her forced breakfast. Only ten minutes of this charade and already she was tired of it. Unfortunately there was nothing she could do about it now, because she was already late for Math.

Sera slipped through the door as quietly as possible, but that didn't stop the professor from taking notice of her. He was one of the rare human teachers at Avalona, a stoutly man from the Giure clan that Sera was well acquainted with. His name was Alistor Portler, a Seer from an outside clan who had married in to a lower house of Giure. He was also one of her father's many supporters and subordinates, a typical brownnoser who never ceased sucking up to her father's influence. This left her in a very uncomfortable position, seeing as how he always took it upon himself to make a big deal over anything she did in his class in an embarrassing display to kiss her a** in the hopes she'd report back to the Headmaster.

"Ah, Miss Rickon!" He cheered in an excited manner that made his double chin wobble. "Glad you could join us! We haven't started yet, so please take a seat. I've rearranged the seats so that you and your- er- escort could be seated next to one another."

Oh, excellent. She thought with an inward groan and an outward roll of her eyes. Of course she figured her father would arrange for her blonde shadow to be attached to her hip, but did he need to loom over her shoulder every second?
With a strained smile, Sera dipped her head shortly to acknowledge her teacher's effort to gain her favor and threw herself a little forcefully into the seat in front of Becka Farthorn, a terribly sweet girl and the only other Seer on campus she actually trusted. She tried her best to offer the girl what she hoped was a genuine smile, but despite her best efforts the strain of the hard morning easily poked through.

She turned back around as the lessons began, focusing on the game of hangman behind her more than the lecture in front. Every once in awhile her gaze would wander to the fae next to her, her palms itching with the urge to rip her hair out. She didn't like this, not one bit. It meant her father was becoming suspicious of her. It meant she was too careless in her actions. She knew her father well enough to know that in spite of the love for his eldest daughter, nothing would stand in the way of the clans' goal. If evidence of her movement against the clans was ever brought to light, she would be severely punished. That thought weighed heavily on her mind and stilled many of her usual thoughts of rebellion, but recently she'd become very restless. It was certainly enough activity to get her into some serious trouble if anyone put two and two together.

She clenched her hands together tightly under her desk as she thought back to the student records she's riffled through the other night. She had taken it upon herself to remember a few names and faces. She recited than to herself now, her lips quivering ever so slightly as she listed them in her head.
Scarlett Kahler, pixie halfling. Duncan Ariss, Kelpie halfling. Jayden Lyder, Asrai halfling-
She paused on the last one, remembering how long she'd stayed on his file. Male Asrais were extremely rare, almost unheard of. She had memorized his picture, hoping she'd recognize him in a crowd and have a chance to thoroughly meet him. A wry smile met her lips at the thought of picking his brain, to find out how much of his heritage he actually knew. Despite her desire to help the halflings, she was still a Seer and avid scholar of the fae.

A lot of their newer students ended up being fae connected with water and the night, something that had gotten Sera's attention rather intently. Sometimes the scouters would collect halflings in certain groups, but for almost all of them to be connected to water and darkness attributes was quite fishy, even by her standards.
Fishy, she snorted softly to herself. Sera, you are pretty lame to even unintentionally make a pun that bad.

“There’s so much I can’t do; why not do what I can?”

User Image When Sera appeared in the classroom, Becka’s dark eyes flicked up for a moment, and for that moment there was an unholy amusement in them – she knew perfectly well what had gotten the Math teacher all excited when Sera had deigned to show up, and it made her giggle inwardly. She probably shouldn’t; poor Sera looked embarrassed even if she was trying hard not to show it, and it couldn’t be easy living with the kind of pressure that the other girl did. When Sera offered her a smile, forced as it was, Becka’s smile beamed in return – she never turned down a smile, nor did she ever miss an opportunity to give one in return.

She politely ignored the Fae male. Though she could be as polite as required, she didn’t like to spend any more time with them than she had to; she preferred her time with the halflings, getting to know them and being kind to them. The true Fae didn’t respond well to kindness, at least not the chirpy, cheery sort that Becka offered.

As her game with the girl beside her continued, Becka was a little overly aware of the fact that Sera was listening in. The other girl wasn’t the only one, not at all; most of the people around them were at least half-watching their game, because Math was so incredibly dull. She had to feel bad for their instructor, who really did try even if he wasn’t very good at what he did.

The game ended eventually (in a tie, which wasn’t at all unusual for the two girls) and as they moved on to another game of tic-tac-toe, Becka happened to look up and spot a flash of red hair. Her heart jumped up into her throat, and she tilted her head to try and get a better look. Disappointment flushed her cheeks when she realized that it wasn’t the new girl like she had thought.

It was only after she’d finished thinking that that she began to wonder if maybe, just maybe, she might be in a little bit of trouble. The jump in her heartrate, the disappointment when it wasn’t who she thought it was, and she’d never even spoken to the girl. She was worried that she might be doing that thing again, where she developed a person in her head to have a crush on – until she spoke to that person and realized the person she’d thought she liked never existed. That was really not something she wanted to do while she was here…especially not considering that almost everyone else here was a halfling.

And so she shook the thought out of her head and went back to tic-tac-toe, with occasional glances at the clock as the class dragged by. It couldn’t be too much longer, she told herself; the class always felt like time slowed down while she was in it, but sooner or later they had to be done. But when she looked up at the clock, it didn’t seem to have moved at all.

Leaning forward, she tapped Sera’s shoulder. If the other girl should look back, Becka’s emphatic gesture towards her wrist – do you know the real time? – should tell her everything that she needed to know.

((OOC: Well, perhaps you can have your boy go off on a brief adventure or check out something else going on in his plans or whatnot while Sera's stuck in class and not going anywhere? Also, don't forget that p a n provided an OOC thread for us, which we should probably move this conversation to. :3))
