Foraging

Several large, gnarled trees grow on the surface above the caves of Famine, forming a shady canopy of leaves. The female horseman that met you out here looks as old and gnarled as the trees, what little of her can be seen under layers of sand-colored robes.

“It is a special season now! We gather special fruit. Very prized. Today you must pick it.” She held out a large, poisonous “BUT! Many hidden dangers above us. Flying is no good. Trees here do not want to be picked from so easily.”

“This fruit, she grows fast, ripens with FEAR. Pick her too soon, she is poisonous, stomach will ache. No good.” The old woman pantomimed as she spoke. “Wait too long, she is too heavy, falls to the ground, dissipates. No fruit.”

There is a brief pause before the horseman herds you to the base of a tree. “Waiting for what, then? Up the tree! Go!”

Quote:
Your student starts off with a total of 4 rounds that it takes to make it up the tree. Different rolls will add or subtract from that number as you go, determining if your student successfully picks ripe fruit. Your goal is not to be too slow OR too fast – adding or subtracting too many rounds from your total can lead to failure. There is also a slim chance of complete failure.
In each post, include your total as you go. When you start, the number is always 4.

Quote:
ROLL 1

Roll 1d4:
1 - The branch you stepped on breaks. Regain your footing, +1 round
2 - Turns out you're kind of allergic to this plant; you can't stop sneezing. +1 round
3 - Today must be your lucky day. Climbing is easy! -1 round
4 - A gust of wind tosses you up the tree! -1 round

Quote:
ROLL 2

Roll 1d4:
1 - Your convenient handhold turns out to be the entrance to an ant's nest, and they're not happy. +1 round
2 - You find a convenient rope ladder shortcut. -1 round
3 - BEEEEEEEEEES! +1 round
4 - A bird tries to carry you off, but ends up dropping you on a higher branch. -1 round

Quote:
ROLL 3
Roll 1d4:
1 - You are bombarded by a hail of acorns. Take cover, +1 round
2 - Carnivorous flowers n** at your feet, inspiring you to move quickly. -1 round
3 - You swing to a higher branch on a vine. -1 round
4 - Your struggling shakes a bunch of spiders out of the leaves - onto your head. GET THEM OFF, +1 round

Quote:
ROLL 4

Roll 1d4:
1 - You take a leap of faith, which pays off. -1 round
2 - You don't look down. -1 round
3 - You look down. +1 round

Genora had arrived to her training spot for the day. Foredging, but she never would of guessed that the famine clan would have skills this useful. Genora know of how the death clan relied on trance to have an idea for their future, but famine had to find food in anyway, shape, or form. She listened to the old horsewoman of the famine clan. Genora was confused when the old horsewoman said the fruit bear fear inside of them. Picked too soon and they would become poisonous to eat and too late would make them drop. She nodded as she began to climb up the trees with ease. As a breeze began to blow, it was strong enough to put her higher up into the tree.

Genora felt that training today would be easier than she thought. That was until she disturbed a hive of bees. Oh jack, how she hated bees. Especially when they are pissed off. She tried to fend them off, but she ended up losing her footing and it would cost her. She didn't give up and began to climb again.

Genora made sure she was spider free as she climbed closer and close to the top. She learned that you should never look down when up some place higher than your comfort zone. She was curious as to how high she had climbed up. Looking down she felt dizzy and almost let to of the tree. She held on for her dear undead life before climbing up even higher until she reached the top. After climbing back down she noticed that she took too long and some of her fruit turned out bad.

Deciding using only one ingredient would probably not make a very effective poison (and most likely defeat the purpose of the exercise), Sheridan looked through the various other ingredients, searching for something else that caught his interest.

He paused as he hand passed over one vial, filled with a clear substance he was not sure he had seen before. Human tears? How effective such an item would be he did not know, but he was intrigued enough that he added it to his mushrooms.

And then his eyes narrowed, a low growl as he noticed another vial marked 'dried dragon blood'. He did not care for the idea of any piece of dragons being used for making poison (or anything else for that matter). He was tempted to throw it against the wall, even if there was a small consolation in the fact that it was not Cosmic dragon blood.

A heavy snort, a lash of his tail, Sheridan added the vial of blood to his other ingredients. If anyone was to use such an ingredient, it should be one who knew how to honor one of his kind.

Collecting his ingredients, his tail still twitching in irritation, Sheridan made his way to the table lined with what appeared to be chemistry equipment.

He started with the mushrooms, carefully cutting them into small pieces before dropping them into a beaker. Curiously, he examined them through the glass, debating their composition and properties as well as whatever toxins they contained.

Just looking at the mushrooms wasn't accomplishing anything, but maybe setting them over a flame would. Finding a bunsen burner, he lit the flame and set the beaker containing the mushrooms above it. Opening the vial of human tears, he slowly poured them into the beaker with the mushrooms, shaking the beaker in a swirling motion once the ingredients were added.

Another growl as he eyed the vial of dried dragon blood, then a few quiet words muttered in draconic, perhaps a prayer of some sort. Finally he pulled the top from the vial and added the blood to his mixer.

Hmm... It the flame didn't seem to be having much of an effect on his ingredients, save for facilitating their mixing into a thicker liquid. Not much for a first attempt was it...

Maybe he'd have better luck with the antidote...

He returned to the table containing ingredients, a brow raised as he realized just how close the antidote components were to those used for poisons. Either that was poor planning, or a purposeful attempt to sabotage the students' experiments. Somehow he suspected the latter.

Reguardless, he rummaged through the ingredients, first finding a vial with a familiar ingredient. Human tears, intriguing, perhaps it would work better for an antidote than it had for poison. Further rummaging yielded two more ingredients, an herb that looked like fresh thyme and a vial containing what looked like human blood. Too bad it wasn't horsemen blood...

Ingredients in hand, Sheridan walked to the designated station, setting the items on the table near one of the flames. Curiously he eyed the symbols littered across the station, he wasn't sure if he wanted to know what those were for or what type of magic they conjured.

He started with the thyme, no so carefully plucking the leaves from the stem. Taking the vial of blood in one hand he opened the lid and dropped several of the thyme leaves into the red substance. Replacing the lid, he shook the vial to mix it, then removing the cap again, held the bottom of the vial over one of the flames.

Watching as the liquid began to thicken and shift to a dark black, he opened the vial of tears and slowly added it to the vial containing the blood and thyme. The liquid continued to darken, growing thick and heavy like tar. Interesting...

Collecting both his poison and antidote, Sheridan moved to the final station. He eyed the various minipets for several moments as if debating, questioning, he wasn't sure if he liked this part. Though why he should have felt uncomfortable with it he did not know, he ate animals after all, and he would have had no objections whatsoever to using a poison on a human. But there was something about this that unsettled it, maybe he was only nervous about the effectiveness of his attempts at poison and antidote.

After several moments of deliberation, he selected one of the bird minipets, reaching into its cage to catch it with a gentle touch. Silently he apologized to the creature before he injected the poison at the base of its wing. His tail twitched as he watched the effect which was disappointingly uneventful. Had the poison had any effect at all? Maybe, but if it had he couldn't tell.

As ineffective as the poison had been, he still needed to test the antidote. The antidote seemed only slightly more effective than the poison had been, though maybe it was harder to tell when there had been little to no change in the minipet to begin with.

Disappointed, Sheridan returned the minipet to its cage. Maybe his attempt could have been called a pass, but he would not have called it a success.

antidote score: 1
pass ))
