I'm going to admit something now...
I've never seen a dentist before in my life.
Shocked? I know. I will say, for bring twenty-two and never sat in the chair to have your teeth looked at, mine looked pretty good.
But, I opted to get the insurance through work. $6 per paycheck goes to dental. I took a moment and found a dentist with great reviews that took the insurance. I'm calling to schedule an appointment tomorrow.
I know that when I tell him, he'll shake his finger and go "Bad Laili!" but proceed to help me out.
I'm very much in need of a cleaning. A cavity in the back I've noticed. Other than that... I think I'm good.
I'm getting back into flossing. I brush my teeth twice a day. I use mouthwash too.
I'm still scared. My sister went last year and bolted out of the chair and begged to be knocked out. Any tips or advice as I'm in the chair to claim my nerves?
UPDATE: I survived! I took it like a boss and I made it!
They x-rayed me to see how my teeth were. I have no cavities between my teeth, but my wisedom teeth are coming in, one is peeking out of the gums now. They said it'll be Jan. 2013 when I'll really need them out.
They did clean my teeth, which made me feel a lot better afterwords. I just had a ton of tartar build up and plaque. And, only two cavities that'll need fillings. The dentist and his assistant were very pleased with the results for a first timer being 22 years old.
And I'm scheduled six months from now for another check-up/cleaning.
Hooray!

There's nothing to be afraid of. You're going to do fine, I wish I could go to a dentist.

biggrin They can wave their finger and tell you that not going is bad til they're blue in the face. Thing is, it's your choice to go or not.
And, depending on how far down that cavity is, will determine if you need to the laughing gas rofl or not. But they won't do that on the first visit. They take x-rays and looks and poke around your mouth. After that, well they'll let you know if you need work done outside of a cleaning.
emotion_kirakira Their job is to make sure you have pretty chompers!

I've had several cavities filed, and just recently had all four of my wisom teeth cut out at the same time. Trust me, while I don't like the dentist at all. . . it's nothing to be nervous over. You either get the cavitity filled with some minor effort. . . or wait years till it's killing you and they have to take out the whole tooth or something. No need to be nervous, trust me.

Visiting a dentist for the first time can be very daunting. I understand why you would be frightened. My advice is to get a pint of vodka, and chug it right before you go in. It will help calm your nerves.

I find that chewing on hay cleans my teeth after I've had a long cud chewing session.

It's nothing, only unless the dentist needs to pull out a tooth, anesthesia is needed, which is quite painful for just a few seconds and then it's all done. numbness for a whole night, and all the ice cream you want for the soul. mrgreen

There is nothing to be afraid of, as long as he's got some experience, right? It isn't like you are going into an alley to have some random stranger without a degree, let alone, anyone knowing who they are or where they came from, do work in your mouth. So there is little room for error here and since what you are getting done seems like regular work, he's bound to have a lot of experience in that specific sort of task anyways. Worst case they will inject you with Novocaine, that stuff numbs the area, or in my case my whole face, but then again my boyfriend suspects I may have a slight adverse reaction to that stuff. Also I'm pretty sure they will give your teeth a look over, clean them, and then later schedule an appointment for filling and whatever else work. Oh well, you will do fine I'm sure of it, also anesthesia is different from Novocaine; you CAN have one without the other because Novocaine numbs you and anesthesia puts you to sleep. They gave me both for my wisdom teeth operation on the 10th of last month, since my widoms were way far up near my jaw bones; just as well since I knew I wasn't going to be able to hold my mouth open that long. Good luck to you for whatever may happen, no matter how low the severity.

If all they're doing is cleaning your teeth then you're fine. They just scrape around a bit, brush them, and then you can't eat for half an hour. simple. The only annnoying thing is keeping your mouth open the whole time.
Now as for filling cavities, all I have to say is, it is a bad experience, but not overly painful. So you in for minor pain either way that will last for an hour tops.
